A study on heat transport limitation for a perfluorocarbon heat pipe (PFC 히트파이프의 열전달 한계에 관한 연구)

  • A PFC(Perfluorocarbon) heat pipe has been used recently for cooling of GTO(gate turn off) thyristors or diodes in electric commuter trains. The present study was conducted to determine heat transport limitation of a PFC heat pipe which is one of the important parameters in heat pipes design. The variables such as tube diameter, fill charge ratio, internal surface structure and operating temperature were examined by way of experiment. Experimental data showed that the heat transport limitation of PFC heat pipe was considerably low and mostly dependent on tube diameter, with the value of 440~500W for d$o$/=22.23mm and 150~200W for d$o$=15.88mm. The other parameters had negligible effects, except for the case of small charge ratio less than 30%. Some correlations proposed by previous studies were in agreement with data from this study within 10~30%.

Analysis on the thermal performances of air-earth direct heat exchanger in one year (공기 지중간 직접열교환시스템의 연중 열성능 해석)

  • This study is focused on the development and selection of the optimal cool tube system to maximize its thermal performance. Cool tube is devised to reduce the heating and cooling load of building by preheating or refreshing of intake air with buried pipes. Finite volume method is adopted to solve the conduction problem between the cool tube and earth. We examine the cool tube system for two operating periods, a short term(12 hours) and a long term(3 months). The results of short term operations reveal that condensation significantly influences and raises the exit air temperature. For long term operations, optimum conditions of cool tube system are obtained with variations of flow-rate, depth, length and diameter of cool tube.

Effect of Induction Heat Bending Process on the Properties of ASME SA106 Gr. C Carbon Steel Pipes

  • Recently, the bending process is greatly applied to fabricate the pipe line. Bending process can reduce welding joints and then decrease the number of inspection. Thus, the maintenance cost will be reduced. Induction heat bending process is composed of bending deformation by repeated local heat and cooling. By this thermal process, corrosion properties and microstructure can be affected. This work focused on the effect of induction heating bending process on the properties of ASME SA106 Gr. C low carbon steel pipes. Microstructure analysis, hardness measurements, and immersion corrosion test were performed for base metal and bended area including extrados, intrados, crown up, and down parts. Microstructure was analyzed using an optical microscope and SEM. Hardness was measured using a Rockwell B scale. Induction heat bending process has influenced upon the size and distribution of ferrite and pearlite phases which were transformed into finer structure than those of base metal. Even though the fine microstructure, every bent area showed a little lower hardness than that of base metal. It is considered that softening by the bending process may be arisen. Except of I2, intrados area, the others showed a similar corrosion rate to that of base metal. But even relatively high rate of intrados area was very low and acceptable. Therefore, it is judged that induction heat bending process didn't affect boric acid corrosion behaviour of carbon steel.

Effects of Induction Heat Bending Process on Microstructure and Corrosion Properties of ASME SA312 Gr.TP304 Stainless Steel Pipes

  • The usage of bending products recently have increased since many industries such as automobile, aerospace, shipbuilding, and chemical plants need the application of pipings. Bending process is one of the inevitable steps to fabricate the facilities. Induction heat bending is composed of compressive bending process by local heating and cooling. This work focused on the effect of induction heat bending process on the properties of ASME SA312 Gr. TP304 stainless steel pipes. Tests were performed for base metal and bended area including extrados, intrados, crown up, and down parts. Microstructure was analyzed using an optical microscope and SEM. In order to determine intergranular corrosion resistance, Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiokinetic Reactivation (DL-EPR) test and ASTM A262 practice A and C tests were done. Every specimen revealed non-metallic inclusion free under the criteria of 1.5i of the standard and the induction heat bending process did not affect the non-metallic inclusion in the alloys. Also, all the bended specimens had finer grain size than ASTM grain size number 5 corresponding to the grain sizes of the base metal and thus the grain size of the pipe bended by induction heat bending process is acceptable. Hardness of transition start, bend, and transition end areas of ASME SA312 TP304 stainless steel was a little higher than that of base metal. Intergranular corrosion behavior was determined by ASTM A262 practice A and C and DL-EPR test, and respectively step structure, corrosion rate under 0.3 mm/y, and Degree of Sensitization (DOS) of 0.001~0.075% were obtained. That is, the induction heat bending process didn't affect the intergranular corrosion behavior of ASME SA312 TP304 stainless steel.

  • Ground-coupled heat pump system has attracted attention as a promising renewable energy technology due to its improving energy efficiency and eco-friendly mechanism for space cooling and heating. Pipes buried in the ground play a role of direct thermal interaction between circulating fluid inside the pipe and surrounding soils in the geothermal exchange system. However, both complexities of turbulent flow coupling thermal-hydraulic phenomena and very long aspect ratio of the pipe make it difficult to model the heat exchange system directly. Energy balance for fluid flow inside the pipe was derived to model thermal-hydraulic phenomena, and one-dimensional pipe element was proposed through Galerkin formation and time integration of the equation. Developed element is combined to pre-developed FEM code for THM phenomena in porous media. Numerical results of Thermal Response Test showed that line-source model overestimates equivalent thermal conductivity of surrounding soils due to thermal interaction between adjacent pipes and finite length of the pipe. Thus, inverse analysis for the TRT simulation was conducted to present optimal transformation matrix with utmost convergence.

  • The most the electronic industry has recently accelerated the modularization, the miniaturization and the high integrated trend of electronics fields such as electronics components, appliances and etc., the most increasingly the heat generation problem rises. Even though the conventional cooling technologies are widely used in order to reduce the heat loads, the technologies are not easy to meet the present trends due to the fact that most of many conventional methods are relative to external form environments such as size, design and so on. With regardless of those environments, however, a heat pipe is one of the most efficient systems to improve the heat transfer performance. And then the performance of the heat pipe depends on a wick structure. Of various wick structures, sintered metal wick is known so that it has some advantages such as smaller pore size, increasing porosity as well as high reliability. In this study sintered metal wicks, thickness 0.7 mm, 0.8 mm and 0.9 mm, were manufactured as of $100{\mu}m$ copper powder to obtain the manufacturing technology of heat pipes mounted with a sintered metal wick. Furthermore, experiments for the operational performance factors such as capillary limit, thermal resistance were not only performed but also compared with a theoretical model simultaneously. Experimental results agreed with the theoretical model, and then it seems to be required to study various development processes of sintered metal wicks for the high performance of a heat pipe system.

A Study on the Characteristics of Heat Treated ERW Weld Seam and the Technology of Seam Annealing (고장력 강재의 전기저항 용접부 열처리 특성 및 기술에 대한 연구)

  • To fine seam annealer capacity of through thickness seam annealing in terms of through thickness microstructure change with increased toughness and elongation leaving heat trace on it, high strength steel pipes of ERW with different thickness were tested in different seam annealing temperature measured on the outer surface of pipes. Annealing temperature and microstructure of the weld seam were changed through applied seam annealing condition. Toughness and tensile test with hardness and microstructure analysis were done on the annealed weld seam to fine its characteristics as a primary step and annealing characteristics according to different seam annealing condition. Through a study of annealed ERW weld seam characteristics and seam annealing technology, amount of electric power should apply in decreased manner to arranged inductors of annealer in the order of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, so on for proper seam annealing. For example of 15.4mm thick and 610mm outside diameter pipe, applied power for proper seam annealing is 600 -650kw at 1st inductor, 450 - 500kw at 2nd inductor, 200-250 kw at 3rd inductor of annealer during 10 - 12M/minute moving speed of pipe. Also, the penetration depth of heat trace along the thickness direction of weld during seam annealing can be estimated through the equation 17mm/kv$\times$voltage(kv) with the microstructure and hardness analysis of thick weld seam as well as study of seam annealing and comparison of cooling condition to CCT diagram of low carbon high strength steel. From this result, the difference between the technological applicability of full annealing condition based on phase diagram and full penetration of heat trace based on CCT diagram along the thickness of weld seam is discussed.

Materials Integrity Analysis for Application of Hyper Duplex Stainless Steels to Korean Nuclear Power Plants

  • Hyper duplex stainless steels have been developed in Korea for the purpose of application to the seawater system of Korean nuclear power plants. This system supplies seawater to cooling water heat exchanger tubes, related pipes and chlorine injection system. In normal operation, seawater is supplied to heat exchanger through the exit of circulating water pump headers, and the heat exchanged sea water is extracted to the discharge pipes in circulating water system connected to the circulating water discharge lines. The high flow velocity of some part of seawater system in nuclear power plants accelerates damages of components. Therefore, high strength and high corrosion resistant steels need to be applied for this environment. Hyper duplex stainless steel (27Cr-7.0Ni-2.5Mo-3.2W-0.35N) has been newly developed in Korea and is being improved for applying to nuclear power plants. In this study, the physical & mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of newly developed materials are quantitatively evaluated in comparative to commercial stainless steels in other countries. The properties of weld & HAZ (heat affected zone) are analyzed and the best compositions are suggested. The optimum conditions in welding process are derived for ensuring the volume fraction of ferrite(${\alpha}$) and austenite(${\gamma}$) in HAZ and controlling weld cracks. For applying these materials to the seawater heat exchanger, CCT and CPT in weldments are measured. As a result of all experiments, it was found that the newly developed hyper duplex stainless steel WREMBA has higher corrosion resistance and mechanical properties than those of super austenitic stainless steels including welded area. It is expected to be a promising material for seawater systems of Korean nuclear power plants.

Effect of Induction Heat Bending Process on the Corrosion Properties of 316 Stainless Steel Pipes for Nuclear Power Plant (원자력발전소용 316 스테인리스강 배관의 부식특성에 미치는 유도가열벤딩공정의 영향)

For facility fabrication, bending process is one of key technologies for pipings. Induction heat bending process is composed of bending deformation by repeated local heat and cooling. Because of local heating and compressive strain, detrimental phases may be precipitated and microstructural change can be induced. This work focused on the effect of induction heat bending process on the properties of ASME SA312 TP316 stainless steel. Evaluation was done on the base metal and the bended areas before and after heat treatment. Microstructure analysis, intergranular corrosion test including Huey test, double loop electropotentiokinetic reactivation test, oxalic acid etch test, and anodic polarization test were performed. On the base of microstructural analysis, grain boundaries in bended extrados area were zagged by bending process, but there were no precipitates in grain and grain boundary and the intergranular corrosion rate was similar to that of base metal. However, pitting potentials of bended area were lower than that of the base metal and zagged boundaries was one of the pitting initiation sites. By re-annealing treatment, grain boundary was recovered and pitting potential was similar to that of the base metal.

Numerical Study of Forced Convection Nanofluid in Double Pipe (이중관 내부 나노유체의 강제대류에 관한 수치적 연구)

  • Numerical study was performed to investigate the convective heat transfer of Al2O3/water nanofluid flowing through the concentric double pipe counterflow heat exchangers. Hot fluid flowing through the inner pipe transfers its heat to cooling fluid flowing in the outer pipe. Effects of important parameters such as hot and cold volume flow rates, fluid type in the outer and inner pipes, and nanoparticles concentration on the heat transfer and flow characteristics are investigated. The results indicated that the heat transfer performance increases with increasing the hot and cold volume flow rates, as well as the particle concentrations. When both outer and inner pipes are nanofluids with 8% nanoparticle volume concentration, nanofluids showed up to 17% better heat transfer rate than basic fluids. Also, the average heat transfer coefficient of the base fluid for annulus-side improved by 31%. Approximately 20% enhancement in the heat exchanger effectiveness can be achieved with the addition of 8% alumina particles in base fluid. But, addition of nanoparticles to the base fluid enhanced friction factor by about 196%.
