  • Matrix converter is direct power conversion system. Matrix converter has many merits that possible bidirectional power flow, input power factor own control and system without DC-link. But matrix converter has some demerits that need many switching devices and switching loss. This paper suggest optimal matrix converter control scheme for improvement for switching loss part. Proposed control scheme verified that 10% improvement in efficiency, input current's harmonic loss and output voltage's EMI improvement.

  • In this paper, a novel loss minimization of an induction generator in wind energy generation systems is presented. The proposed algorithm is based on the flux level reduction, for which the generator d-axis current reference is estimated using support vector regression (SVR). Wind speed is employed as an input of the SVR and the samples of the generator d-axis current reference are used as output to train the SVR algorithm off-line. Data samples for wind speed and d-axis current are collected for the training process, which plots a relation of input and output. The predicted off-line function and the instantaneous wind speed are then used to determine the d-axis current reference. It is shown that the effect of loss minimization is more significant at low wind speed and the loss reduction is about to 40% at 4[m/s] wind speed. The validity of the proposed scheme has been verified by experimental results.

  • A coreless electronic transformer is proposed. Conventional iron cored transformer is heavy and bulky and it has substantial amount of no load loss. On the other hand, electronic transformer can be made of negligible no load loss and is small size and lightweight. It consists of rectifier and PWM inverter. Electronic transformer is easily modeled to conventional Buck converter; therefore, output voltage is controlled by duty ratio. It is thought to be suitable for applications where the operation duty is low. In this paper, a novel coreless transformer is proposed, then it's detailed analysis, simulative and experimental results are presented

  • Recently, there has been a growing demand for soft magnetic materials with high conversion characteristics, due to the trend of electric devices to higher-frequency range. For ruduceing core loss in the high-frequency range, using finely grained and high-resistivity Fe-based alloy powder is most efficient methods. But, conventionally, there's been a compressibility problem for such powder. In this work, Fe-based alloy powder that offers both high resistivity and high compressibility was developed by studyuing composition of the powder, and reduction of core loss of P/M soft magnetic materials in the high frequency range was achieved.

  • The magnetic reconnection mechanism is a primary candidate for "flare" processes in solar coronal regions. Numerical simulations of two-dimensional magnetic reconnection are carried out for four different cases: (1) adiabatic condition with constant resistivity, (2) adiabatic condition with temperature-dependent resistivity, (3) energetics with radiation loss and constant resistivity and (4) energetics with radiation loss and temperature-dependent resistivity. It is found that the thermal instability prompts the magnetic reconnection process, thus increasing the conversion rate of magnetic energy into kinematic energy of the fluid. We demonstrated that the observed microflares can be accounted for by our magnetic reconnection models, when the effects of the radiation loss and the temperature-dependent resistivity are taken into account.

  • The purpose of high frequency transformer in the inverter is to reduce the voltage and current stresses of switch components when it operates at the large conversion ratio. But the loss of transformer is the major contributor in the efficiency of inverter. This paper presents the method of core design to minimize the loss of transformer. The total loss of transformer is minimized by adjusting the effective cross-sectional areas of core. The component ratio of losses are compared by using the finite-element analysis.

  • In this paper, a soft switching half-bridge converter using secondary switches for output control and conduction loss reduction is proposed. The conventional half-bridge converter must be fixed on duty cycle for soft switching. The proposed converter was consisted of two added switches in series of the secondary rectifier diodes. The main switches with constant duty cycle are operated ZVS. The secondary switches are operated ZV-ZCS. Especially, the primary switches were fixed duty cycle for maximum voltage conversion ratio. Output of converter is controlled by duty cycle or phase-shifted time of secondary switches. The conduction loss of the proposed converter can be reduced by the secondary switches. The operation characteristic, analysis, simulation and experimental results of the proposed converter are presented.

  • The aim of the paper is to design the PLS(Plasma Lighting System) driving inverter circuit with optimal efficiency. In general, it is known that the PLS driven by a pulse has a higher light-conversion efficiency. There are the Class-E type resonant inverter and the semi-bridge inverter as a circuit which can make a pulse with low duty ratio. In this paper, we analyze the losses of the above two circuits. To verify the loss analysis, the inverter circuit with 220V 380W input consumption is manufactured and tested. Throughout the experimental results, the high efficiency PLS system has confirmed.

  • We report the first demonstration of 10 Gb/s wavelength conversion in a Mach-Zehnder interferometric wavelength converter monolithically integrated with a loss-coupled DFB probe source. The integrated device is fabricated using a BRS (buried ridge stripe) structure with an undoped InP clad layer on the top of a passive waveguide to reduce high propagation loss. The device exhibited a static extinction ratio of 11 dB. Good performance at 10 Gb/s is obtained with an extinction ratio of 7 dB and a power penalty of 2.8 dB at a 10$^{-9}$ bit error rate.

  • In a research on the practical dye-sensitized solar cell, a study on a large module have preference because module must be able to generate the proper current that is possible to convert electrically. So the parallel connection of dye-sensitized solar cells which outputs a large current easily is essential. However, there is a current loss in a paralle connection of dye-sensitized solar cells and the loss becomes larger according to increasing the number of parallel connection. In this study, we analyzed the cause of the current loss in the parallel connection by using the equivalent circuit analysis. One DSC used in this experiment had an active area $8cm^2$(4.62cm$\times$1.73cm) and it attained a conversion efficiency of 5.43% under 1 sun illumination ($P_{in}$ of 100 mW/$cm^2$) using a solar simulator.
