  • Isotropic pitch based carbon fibers were exposed to isothermal oxidation in carbon dioxide gas to study the activation kinetics under the temperature of 800~$1100^{\circ}C$. The kinetic equation $f=1-{\exp}(-at^b)$ was introduced and the constant b was obtained in the range of 0.92~1.25. It was shown that the activated carbon fiber shows the highly specific surface area (SSA) when the constant b comes close to 1. The activation kinetics were evaluated by the reaction-controlling regime (RCR) according to changes of the apparent activation energy with changes of the conversion. It was observed that the activation energies increase from 47.6 to 51.2 kcal/mole with the conversion increasing from 0.2 to 0.8. It was found that the pores of the activated carbon fiber under the chemical reaction were developed well through the fiber.

  • In the current research, the curing kinetics of a mixture system consisting of a Bisphenol-A type vinyl ester resin and styrene monomer was studied. Methylethylketone peroxide and cobalt octoate were used as the polymerization initiator and accelerator respectively. Thermograms with several different heating rates were obtained using non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry. Activation energy values analyzed by the Flynn-Wall-Ozawa isoconversional method showed a three-step change with conversion ${\alpha}$: a slight decrease initially for ${\alpha}$ < 0.1, a constant value of 47.9 kJ/mol in the range 0.1 < ${\alpha}$ < 0.7, and a slow increase for 0.7 < ${\alpha}$. When assuming a constant activation energy of 47.9 kJ/mol, an autocatalytic model of the Sestak-Berggren equation was considered as the proper mathematical model of the conversion function, indicating an overall order of 1.2.

  • This paper introduces a simple core loss calculation method for output filter inductor in pulse width modulation (PWM) DC-AC inverter. Amorphous C-core (AMCC-320) is used to analyze the core loss. In order to measure core loss of the output filter inductor and validate the proposed method, a single-phase half-bridge inverter and a calorimeter are used. By changing switching frequency and modulation index (MI) of the inverter, core loss of the AMCC-320 is measured with the lab-made calorimeter and the results are compared with calculated core loss. The proposed method can be easily extended to other core loss calculation of various converters.

  • When using finite element pogram ABAQUS to compute material characteristics, one builds a user material subroutine if unique constitutive feature needs to be included. In ABAQUS/Standard, UMAT subroutine should be built, and in ABAQUS/Explicit, VUMAT should be used. Although two subroutines carry out the same type of task, two different programs should be made depending on the working environment, and it is not easy to program the subroutines following the manual without enough understanding of solid mechanics. In this paper, difference between UMAT and VUMAT subroutines is epitomized, and a conversion scheme from UMAT to VUMAT is discussed. An example shows that the two programs give the same stress computation result.

  • This paper presents an analytic method to calculate energy conversion between electromagnetically coupled high-temperature superconducting and copper coils. The energy transfer from one coil to the other is commonly observed during quench of a no-insulation (NI) high temperature superconductor (HTS) magnet. Proper understanding of this phenomenon is particularly important to protect an NI HTS magnet, especially to avoid any potential mechanical damages. In this paper, analytic equations are obtained to estimate the energy transfer between the NI and copper coils. The well-known lumped-parameter circuit model is adopted provided that key parameters of the coils are given.

  • Processes for optimizing the coil shape of deflection yoke are proposed A very accurate and practical winding modeler is developed and volume integral equation method (VIEM) is used for field calculation. Two steps of optimizations are done by using (1+1) evolution strategy. Those are dimensional optimization and pin-position optimization Various techniques are applied for reducing computational time for the optimization.

  • The cure kinetics of a cycloalipatic epoxy / anhydride / Co(II) system for a no-flow underfill encapsulant, has been studied by using a differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) under isothermal and dynamic conditions over the temperature range of $160^{\circ}C ~220^{\circ}C$. The kinetic analysis was carried out by fitting dynamic/isothermal heating experimental data to the kinetic expressions to determine the reaction parameters, such as order of reaction and reaction constants. Diffusion-controlled reaction has been observed as the cure conversion increases and successfully analyzed by incorporating the diffusion control term into the rate equation. The prediction of reaction rates by the model equation corresponded well to experimental data at all temperature.

  • The effect of pH on anaerobic hydrogen production was investigated under various pH conditions ranging from pH 3 to 10. When the modified Gompertz equation was applied to the statistical analysis of the experimental data, the hydrogen production potential and specific hydrogen production rate at pH 5 were 1,182 ml and 112.5 ml/g biomass-h, respectively. In this experiment, the maximum theoretical hydrogen conversion ratio was 22.56%. The Haldane equation model was used to find the optimum pH for hydrogen production and the maximum specific hydrogen production rate. The optimum pH predicted by this model is 5.5 and the maximum specific hydrogen production rate is 119.6 ml/g VSS-h. These data fit well with the experimented data($r^2=0.98$).
