  • Sensors in a smartphone can be used to measure various physical quantities. In this paper, we propose an object localization scheme in a three dimenstional using a smart phone. The proposed scheme estimates the location of an object by observing it from several different points. The direction to the target object and the locations of the observation points are collected at each observation point using the location sensor and the orientation sensor in the smartphone. Based on these observations, the proposed scheme derives three dimensional line of sight vectors and estimates the location of the target object that minimizes the estimation error. We implemented the proposed scheme on an Android smartphone and tested its performance by estimating the height of a building and characteristics of the proposed approach.

  • The future teleconferencing systems will need an appropriate system which controls properly the acoustic echo for the convenient communication. The conventional acoustic echo cancellation algorithms involve large adaptive filters identifying the impulse response of the echo path. The use of adaptive IIR filters appears to be a reasonable way to reduce computational complexity. Effective cancellation of acoustic echo presented in teleconferencing system requires that adaptive filters have a rapid convergence speed. One of the main problems of acoustic echo cancellation techniques is that the convergence properties degrade for an highly correlated signal input such as speech signals. By the way, the introduction of linear prediction filers onto the structure of the acoustic echo cancellation represents one approach to decorrelate the speech signal. And variable step-size LMS algorithm improves the convergence speed through a little increasing of computational complexity. In this paper, we applied these two methods to the acoustic echo canceller(AEC) and showed that these methods have better performances than the conventional AEC.

  • We propose an improvement of particle swarm optimization (PSO) based on the stabilization of particle movement (PM). PSO uses a stochastic variable to avoid an unfortunate state in which every particle quickly settles into a unanimous, unchanging direction, which leads to overshoot around the optimum position, resulting in a slow convergence. This study shows that randomly located particles may converge at a fast speed and lower overshoot by using the proportional-integral-derivative approach, which is a widely used feedback control mechanism. A benchmark consisting of representative training datasets in the domains of function approximations and pattern recognitions is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed PSO. The final outcome confirms the improved performance of the PSO through facilitating the stabilization of PM.

  • An efficient adaptive nonlinear compensator, based on a wavelet transform domain adaptive Volterra filter along with a modified escalator algorithm, is proposed to speed up the convergence rate of an adaptive LMS algorithm. In particular, it is well known that the e.g., slow convergence speed of an adaptive LMS algorithm depends on the statistical characteristics (e.g., large eigenvalue spread) of the corresponding auto-correlation matrix of the input vector. To solve such a convergence problem, the proposed approach utilizes a modified escalator algorithm and a wavelet transform domain adaptive LMS Volterra filtering technique, which leads to diagonalization of the auto-correlation matrix of the ...

  • In this study we use inexact Newton-like methods to find solutions of nonlinear operator equations on Banach spaces with a convergence structure. Our technique involves the introduction of a generalized norm as an operator from a linear space into a par-tially ordered Banach space. In this way the metric properties of the examined problem can be analyzed more precisely. Moreover this approach allows us to derive from the same theorem on the one hand semi-local results of kantorovich-type and on the other hand 2global results based on monotonicity considerations. By imposing very general Lipschitz-like conditions on the operators involved on the other hand by choosing our operators appropriately we can find sharper error bounds on the distances involved than before. Furthermore we show that special cases of our results reduce to the corresponding ones already in the literature. Finally our results are used to solve integral equations that cannot be solved with existing methods.

  • In the communication system, adaptive equalizer using LMS algorithm has slow convergence rate in spite of effectiveness and simplicity. In this paper, we designed the wavelet transform based adaptive equalizer to overcome this problem. The performance of this new approach is compared with that of the time domain LMS algorithm by convergence rate with respect to change of channel distortion and filter order. As a result, the wavelet transform based adaptive equalizer shows the improvements in the speed of convergence compared with LMS algorithm based adaptive equalizer.

  • The rubber seal is a part inserted into servo cylinder to keep the air pressure constant. In order for efficient movements of the servo cylinder, the frictional coefficient of the rubber seal needs to be minimized while the sealing is maintained. In this work the friction characteristics of rubber seal specimen are tested on metal plate at various conditions. The experimental conditions include roughness level, applied pressure, lubrication, and rubbing speed. The design of experiment approach is taken to assess the effect of each parameter. The nonlinear frictional response of the rubber is applied to the FEM model simulating the servo cylinder movement. The result demonstrates that precise optimization of the servo cylinder movement must be preceded by preliminary experiments coupled with the theory and FEM model.

  • The p-version of the finite element method is a new approach to finite element analysis in which the partition of the domain is held fixed while the degree p of approximating piecewise polynomials is increased. In this paper, the focus is on computer implementation of a new hierarchic p-convergence shell model based on blend mapping functions. Its rigid-body modes, round-off error, and convergence characteristics are investigated.

  • In this study, we consider infinite supply of raw materials and backlogged demands as given two boundary conditions. And we need not make any specific assumptions about the inter-arrival of external demand and service time distributions. We propose a numeric model and an algorithm in order to compute the first two moments of inter-departure process. Entropy enables us to examine the convergence of this process and to derive measurable relations of this process. Also, lower bound on the variance of inter-departure process plays an important role in proving the existence and uniqueness of an optimal solution for a numeric model and deriving the convergence order of augmented Lagrange multipliers method applied to a numeric model. Through these works, we confirm some structural properties and numeric examples how the validity and applicability of our study.

  • The single-suture neochorda-folding plasty technique is a modification of existing mitral valve repair techniques. In the authors' experience, its simplicity, reliability, and versatility make it a useful technique for mitral valve repair, especially when a minimally invasive approach is used.
