  • Currently, Korea is an aging society, and it is expected to enter a super-aging society in about 4 years. Accordingly, many X-ray technologies are being developed. In X-rays, 99% of X-rays are converted into heat energy and 1% into light energy (X-rays). 99% of the thermal energy raises the temperature of the anode and its surroundings, and the cooling system is an important factor as overheating can affect the deterioration of X-ray quality and shortened lifespan. There is a method of forced air cooling using natural convection. Therefore, in this study, when X-rays were taken 5 times, Flow analysis was performed on heat removal according to temperature rise and cooling time for the heat generated at the anode of the X-ray tube (input power 60kW, 75kW, 90kW). Based on one-shot, the most rapid temperature rise section increased by more than 57% to 0.03 seconds, A constant temperature rises from 0.03 seconds to 0.1 seconds, It is judged that the temperature rises by about 8.2% or more at one time. After one-shot cooling, the cooling drops sharply from about 60% to 0.03 seconds, It is judged that the temperature has cooled by more than 86% compared to the temperature before shooting. One-shot is cooled by more than 86% with cooling time after 0.1 seconds, As the input power of the anode increases, the cooling temperature gradually increases. Since the tungsten of the anode target inside the X-ray tube may be damaged by thermal shock caused by a rapid temperature rise, an improvement method for removing thermal energy is required when using a high-input power supply.

  • Steady, laminar, forced convection flow and heat transfer in the entrance region of an internally finned circular duct with a finite thermal conductivity has been analyzed numerically. The problem under investigation is a three-dimensional boundary layer problem, and is solved by employing a marching-type procedure which involves solution of a series of 2-dimensional elliptic problems in the cross-stream plane. Two types of inlet hydrodynamic conditions are considered : (a) uniform velocity flow and (b) fully developed flow. From the above inlet conditions, the effects of the fin height(h), fin number(N) and conductivity ratio($k_r$) on the flow and thermal characteristics are investigated. The numerical results show that the height and number of fins, and ratio of the solid to fluid thermal conductivity have pronounced effect on the solution. Considering pressure drop, optimized dimensionless fin height is 0.4.

  • In this paper, two discretization methods, hybrid and QUICK, are tested for the Navier-Stokes equations written in general nonorthogonal body fitted coordinates. Comparison is made by calculating two laminar flows at low Reynolds numbers of 10 - 100. One is a two-dimensional channel of gradually expanding cross section and the other is an axisymmetric flow through a circular tube having a circular constriction. Results show that the QUICK scheme results in a numerical solution more accurate than that of hybrid. The QUICK scheme also shows faster convergence for both test cases. As the number of grid points increases, all numerical solutions converge with more oscillation. The number of grid points in the y-direction(cross stream direction) is also shown to play a significant role in the approximation of convection term within separated flow zone.

  • Augmentation of heat transfer by ultrasonic vibration in pipes are investigated. Measurements of convective heat transfer coefficients on circular pipe walls are made with and without ultrasonic vibration applied to water. These data are compared with each other to quantify the effects of ultrasonic vibration on heat transfer enhancement. Numerical analysis has been also performed in order to extend the ranges of examined temperature and flow rate. FLUENT Ver.6.1 is used to simulate velocity and temperature fields and evaluate heat transfer coefficient with and without ultrasonic vibration. The results show that the ultra- sonic vibration enhances the Nusselt number of forced convection flow and the increase rate strongly depends on flow rate.

  • Numerical study on the new design of the liquid mass flow meter in infinitesimal flow rate for semiconductor production is performed. The heater and thermistor are wired on the circular tube about 0.3mm inner diameter with designed gap between them. After the time interval from the single pulse heating the thermistor reaches its peak temperature and this time interval is almost inversely proportional to the liquid mass flow rate. The axial conduction in tube wall and convection through the flow is combined. As a result, the peak temperature moving velocity is much smaller than flow mean velocity and there is no linear relationship between them. In this study, the effects of design parameters such as the tube inner/outer diameter, wired heater width, and the gap between heater and thermistor are investigated and the trends of optimization in these parameters are discussed.

  • In this study, the numerical analysis of a turbulent flow around both a staggered and an inline tube bundle was conducted using ANSYS CFX V.13, a commercial CFD software. The flow was assumed to be steady, incompressible, and isothermal. According to the CFD Best Practice Guideline, the sensitivity study for grid size, accuracy of the discretization scheme for convection term, and turbulence model was conducted, and its result was compared with the experimental data to estimate the applicability of the CFD Best Practice Guideline. It was concluded that the CFD Best Practice Guideline did not always guarantee an improvement in the prediction performance of the commercial CFD software in the field of tube bundle flow.

  • Sound waves and acoustic energy generated by two identical TA (ThermoAcoustic) lasers were analyzed and studied. One end of the ceramic stack was heated by a thin NiCr wire wound around that end. The other end of the stack was cooled by natural convection of atmospheric air. The wavelength of the sound waves generated by a single TA laser was four times the tube length and the amplitude of the waves increased with the heating rate. SPL (SoundPressure Level) meters and microphones were employed to measure and study the sound waves at different distances from the glass tube opening and at the focusing point of the TA laser pair for different laser position arrangements. The sound waves of the two TA lasers at the focusing point were found to be almost 180 degrees out of phase when the openings of the two lasers were very close to each other and the angle between the laser axes was small. When the two TA lasers were placed far apart, the sound wave amplitudes and the phase difference between the two laser outputs varied periodically with time. The frequencies of the sound waves changed when the openings of the two TA lasers were in close vicinity and the angle between the laser axes exceeded a certain value. In this case, the glass tube opening was no longer a pressure anti-node and the wavelength of the fundamental mode was not equal to four times the tube length.

  • Numerical analysis and experimental verification of a thermal liquid mass flow meter (LMFM) were performed. The configuration of the LMFM was the same as a gas mass flow meter (GMFM), but the opposite results in temperature difference between upstream and downstream thermistors occurred. In the case of the gas, the convection depending on the flow of thermal mass was small and comparable to the conduction through the sensor tube wall. The temperature difference was proportional to the mass flow rate due to their interaction. For the liquid flow, the convection overwhelmed the wall conduction because of the large flow of thermal mass caused by high density. The temperature difference in this case was inversely proportional to the mass flow rate. The tube diameter and heater wiring width are important design parameters, and the optimized sensor can be used to measure and control the infinitesimal liquid flow rate.

  • This paper assesses the prediction performance of explicit algebraic stress and heat-flux models for reduction of heat transfer coefficient in a strongly-heated vertical tube. Two explicit algebraic stress models and four explicit algebraic heat-flux models are selected for assessment. Eight combinations of explicit algebraic stress and heat-flux models are used in predicting the turbulent gas flows with intense heating, which yields the significant property-variation. The results showed that the two combinations of GS-AKN and WJ-mAKN predicted the Nusselt number and the axial wall temperature variations well and that the predictions of Nusselt number with WJ-combinations spread in a wider range than those with Gs-combinations. WJ is the explicit algebraic stress model of Wallin and Johansson and GS is the model of Gatski and Speziale and that AKN is the explicit heat-flux model of Abe, Kondoh and Nagano and mAKN is the modified AKN.
