Super High Contrast Ratio of TN mode TFT- LCD by Taguchi Design

  • A new high contrast LCD structure for TN mode TFT-LCD, of which the contrast ratio is 1.2 times hi gher than that of the conventional one, has been developed. The contrast ratio of TFT-LCD display can be improved by some modified materials, which like as polarizer, liquid crystal, color filter and light enhancement film. In order to know which condition can get the major contribution for the upgrade of the contrast ratio, we used Taguchi method and analyzed the contribution ratio for each composition and succeed to build up the formula of contrast ratio. From this study, we could achieve the highest CR value as 1200:1 of TN mod e TFT-LCD nowadays.

Contrast Enhancement Method for Images from Visual Sensors (비주얼 센서 영상에 대한 대비 개선 방법)

  • Recently, due to the advancements of sensor network technologies and camera technologies, there are increasing needs to effectively monitor the environment in a region that is difficult to access by using the visual sensor network that combines these two technologies. Since the image captured by the visual sensor reflects the natural phenomenon as it is, the quality of the image may deteriorate depending on the weather or time. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to improve the contrast of images using the characteristics of images obtained from visual sensors. In the proposed method, we first set the region of interest and then analyzes the change of the color value of the region of interest according to the brightness value of the image. The contrast of an image is improved by using the high contrast image of the same object and the analysis information. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed method improves the contrast of an image by restoring the color components of the low contrast image simply and accurately.

A Versatile Medical Image Enhancement Algorithm Based on Wavelet Transform

  • This paper proposed a versatile algorithm based on a dual-tree complex wavelet transform for intensifying the visual aspect of medical images. First, the decomposition of the input image into a high sub-band and low-sub-band image is done. Further, to improve the resolution of the resulting image, the high sub-band image is interpolated using Lanczos interpolation. Also, contrast enhancement is performed by singular value decomposition (SVD). Finally, the image reconstruction is achieved by using an inverse wavelet transform. Then, the Gaussian filter will improve the visual quality of the image. We have collected images from the hospital and the internet for quantitative and qualitative analysis. These images act as a reference image for comparing the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm with the existing state-of-the-art. We have divided the proposed algorithm into several stages: preprocessing, contrast enhancement, resolution enhancement, and visual quality enhancement. Both analyses show the proposed algorithm's effectiveness compared to existing methods.

How Computed Tomography Contrast Media and Magnetic Resonance Imaging Contrast Media Affect the Changes of Uptake Counts of 201Tl

  • The purpose of the study is to investigate how uptake counts of $^{201}Tl$ of radioisotopes in the human body could change, when taking computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging right after injecting contrast media. $^{201}Tl$ radioisotope substances of iodine contrast medium, which is a computed tomography contrast medium, and paramagnetic contrast medium, which is an magnetic resonance imaging contrast medium, were used as study materials. First, $^{201}Tl$ was put into 4 cc of normal saline in test tube, and then a computed tomography contrast medium of Iopamidol$^{(R)}$ or Dotarem$^{(R)}$, was put into 2 cc of normal saline in test tube. An magnetic resonance imaging contrast medium of Primovist$^{(R)}$ or Gadovist$^{(R)}$ was also put into 2 cc of normal saline in test tube. Each contrast medium was distributed to make $^{201}Tl$ as 3 mCi, with a total of 4 cc. Gamma camera, low energy high resolution collimator, and pinhole collimator were used to obtain images. The uptake count of $^{201}Tl$ was measured with 1000 frames of images, and obtained after 10 times of repetition. This study revealed that the use of Gadovist$^{(R)}$, which is an magnetic resonance imaging contrast medium, showed the smallest number of uptake count, after measuring $^{201}Tl$ uptake count by low energy high resolution collimator. On the other hand, the use of Iopamidol$^{(R)}$, which is a computed tomography contrast medium, showed the biggest difference in uptake count, when measuring $^{99m}Tc$ uptake count by Pinhole collimator. When examining with gamma camera, using contrast medium and $^{201}Tl$, identifying the changes of uptake count is very important for improving the value of diagnosis.

Application of T1 Map Information Based on Synthetic MRI for Dynamic Contrast-Enhanced Imaging: A Comparison Study with the Fixed Baseline T1 Value Method

  • Objective: For an accurate dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) MRI analysis, exact baseline T1 mapping is critical. The purpose of this study was to compare the pharmacokinetic parameters of DCE MRI using synthetic MRI with those using fixed baseline T1 values. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 102 patients who underwent both DCE and synthetic brain MRI. Two methods were set for the baseline T1: one using the fixed value and the other using the T1 map from synthetic MRI. The volume transfer constant (Ktrans), volume of the vascular plasma space (vp), and the volume of the extravascular extracellular space (ve) were compared between the two methods. The interclass correlation coefficients and the Bland-Altman method were used to assess the reliability. Results: In normal-appearing frontal white matter (WM), the mean values of Ktrans, ve, and vp were significantly higher in the fixed value method than in the T1 map method. In the normal-appearing occipital WM, the mean values of ve and vp were significantly higher in the fixed value method. In the putamen and head of the caudate nucleus, the mean values of Ktrans, ve, and vp were significantly lower in the fixed value method. In addition, the T1 map method showed comparable interobserver agreements with the fixed baseline T1 value method. Conclusion: The T1 map method using synthetic MRI may be useful for reflecting individual differences and reliable measurements in clinical applications of DCE MRI.

Shape Preserving Contrast Enhancement

  • In this paper, a new analytic approach for shape preserving contrast enhancement is presented. Contrast enhancement is achieved by means of segmental histogram stretching modification which preserves the given image shape, not distorting the original shape. After global stretching, the image is partitioned into several level-sets according to threshold condition. The image information of each level-set is represented as typical value based on grouped differential values. The basic property is modified into common local schemes, thereby introducing the enhanced effect through extreme discrimination between subsets. The scheme is based on stretching the histogram of subsets in which the intensity gray levels between connected pixels are approximately same In spite of histogram widening, stretched by local image information, it neither creates nor destroys the original image, thereby preserving image shape and enhancing the contrast. By designing local histogram stretching operations, we can preserve the original shape of level-sets of the image, and also enhance the global intensity. Thus it can hold the main properties of both global and local image schemes, which leads to versatile applications in the field of digital epigraphy.

  • This work was on the reduction of exposure dose and contrast improvement by Use of Heavy Elements Filter From the result of experimental evaluation, it was found that the beam harding of X-ray was not showed in Ho and Gd, heavy elements filters, contrast to Cu and Al filters In which the harding showed. And the ratio of transit dose to surface dose and the load of X-ray tube increase in order of Al, Cu, Gd and Ho, respectively. The contrast of X-ray images using the intensifying screen and the input phosphor showed the higher value in order of Cu, Al, Gd and Ho. Therefore, in the case of using contrast media and phosphor in region of diagnostic radiology, X-ray image quality depends primarily on kVp and heavy elements filters.

The Effect of Gd-EOB-DPTA on the Stiffness Value of Magnetic Resonance Elastography in Evaluating Hepatic Fibrosis (간 섬유화 평가를 위한 MR elastography의 경직도에 대한 Gd-EOB-DTPA의 영향)

  • Purpose : To evaluate the effect of gadoxetic acid on the measurement of the stiffness value of MR elastography (MRE) used to evaluate hepatic fibrosis (HF). Materials and Methods: MRE was obtained in 32 patients with clinically suspected chronic liver disease, both before and after injection of gadoxetic acid. Two independent reviewers measured the stiffness values of the liver parenchyma on elastograms. The mean liver stiffness values were compared in the pre- and post-contrast MREs using the paired t-test. Intra-rater and inter-rater correlation was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of both pre- and post-contrast MREs was evaluated for the diagnosis of significant HF (${\geq}F2$) using cut off value of 3.1 kPa. Results: There were no significant differences in the stiffness values of the liver parenchyma on pre- and post-contrast MREs (p = 0.15 and 0.38 for each reader, respectively). Regarding intra-rater correlation, excellent agreement was noted on rater 1(ICC = 0.998) and rater 2 (ICC = 0.996). Excellent correlation regarding the measured stiffness values was noted on both pre- and post-contrast MREs (ICC = 0.988 for pre-contrast, ICC = 0.993 for post-contrast). The accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the pre- and post-contrast MREs for differentiating significant HF (${\geq}F2$) from ${\geq}F1$ were same as 71%, 60%, and 100%, respectively. Conclusion: As there was no significant difference in the stiffness measurements seen on MREs before and after administration of gadoxetic acids, it is therefore acceptable to perform MRE after contrast injection in order to evaluate HF.

  • The contrast of display is one of the important specifications. Even if the contrast indicates luminance range which is a capability of the display and is greater in lower luminance or higher luminance, we consider that the greater contrast gets not the better performance. It is not the same value in human visual system. In practice, it is difficult to achieve the full dynamic range seen by human beings using electronic equipment. Therefore, we consider ambient condition and human perception to calculate perceptual contrast using the CIECAM02. In this paper, we propose perceptual contrast that is calculated using the brightness of CIECAM02.
