In this study, the focus is on the issue of whether a container terminal is facing the limitation of its productivity for serving mega-vessels with numerous containers. In order to enhance the terminal operations, a new conceptual design of the container handling system have been proposed. This research focuses on the rail-based container transport system and its operations. This system consists of rail-based shuttle cranes and rail-based transporters called flatcars. The deadlock problem for managing automated transporters in container terminals has been an important issue for a long measurement of time. Therefore, this study defines the deadlock situation and proposes its avoidance rules at the rail-based container transport system, which is required to handle numerous container throughput operations. The deadlock in the rail-based container transport system is classified into two parts: deadlock between cranes and flatcars; deadlock between flatcars. We developed the simulation model for use with characterizing and analyzing the rail-based container transport system. By running the simulation, we derived possible deadlock situations, and propose the several deadlock avoidance algorithms to provide results for these identified situations. In the simulation experiments, the performances of the deadlock avoidance algorithms are compared according to the frequency of deadlocks as noted in the simulations.
This work aims to : establish a model of the container physical distribution system of Pusan port comprising 4 sub-systems of a navigational system, on-dock cargo handling/transfer/storage system, off-dock CY system and an in-land transport system : examine the system regarding the cargo handling capability of the port and analyse the cost of the physical distribution system. The overall findings are as follows : Firstly in the navigational system, average tonnage of the ships visiting the Busan container terminal was 33,055 GRT in 1990. The distribution of the arrival intervals of the ships' arriving at BCTOC was exponential distribution of $Y=e^{-x/5.52}$ with 95% confidence, whereas that of the ships service time was Erlangian distribution(K=4) with 95% confidence, Ships' arrival and service pattern at the terminal, therefore, was Poisson Input Erlangian Service, and ships' average waiting times was 28.55 hours In this case 8berths were required for the arriving ships to wait less than one hour. Secondly an annual container through put that can be handled by the 9cranes at the terminal was found to be 683,000 TEU in case ships waiting time is one hour and 806,000 TEU in case ships waiting is 2 hours in-port transfer capability was 913,000 TEU when berth occupancy rate(9) was 0.5. This means that there was heavy congestion in the port when considering the fact that a total amount of 1,300,000 TEU was handled in the terminal in 1990. Thirdly when the cost of port congestion was not considered optimum cargo volume to be handled by a ship at a time was 235.7 VAN. When the ships' waiting time was set at 1 hour, optimum annual cargo handling capacity at the terminal was calculated to be 386,070 VAN(609,990 TEU), whereas when the ships' waiting time was set at 2 hours, it was calculated to be 467,738 VAN(739,027 TEU). Fourthly, when the cost of port congestion was considered optimum cargo volume to be handled by a ship at a time was 314.5 VAN. When the ships' waiting time was set at I hour optimum annual cargo handling capacity at the terminal was calculated to be 388.416(613.697 TEU), whereas when the ships' waiting time was set 2 hours, it was calculated to be 462,381 VAN(730,562 TEU).

The scale of ship's cargo transport is getting larger, more economics of scale are gained the speed is higher and the size of quay fundling equipment in container terminal is larger. The productivity cf the quay qffects occupation for limited scale of yard. This paper aims to calculate the yard occupation by handling systems, such as OHBC, RMGC, RTTC, etc, and lay-out.
The most important thing in acontainer terminal is to handle the cargo effectively in the limited time available. To achieve this objective, many strategies have been introduced and applied. To create an automated container terminal, it is necessary for the cargo handling equipment to be equipped with more intelligent control systems. From the middle of the 1990's, automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGC) and rubber-tired gantry cranes (RTG) have been widely used to handle containers in yards. Recently, many pieces of equipment, like CCD cameras and sensors, have beenmounted in these cranes to cope with the automated terminal environment. In this paper, we try to support the development of more intelligent automated cranes, which allow for more effective cargo handling in yards. For this purpose, the modeling, tracking control, anti-sway system design, skew motion suppressing, and complicated motion control and suppressing problems must be considered. Especially, in this paper, the system modeling and a new tracking control approach are discussed, and an experimental study is performed based on a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) servosystem design.

LMTT(Linear Motor based Transfer Technology) is a new type of transfer system used in the maritime container terminal fur the port automation, and largely consists of a controller, shuttle car, and rail. The shuttle car is divided into the frame part, the driving part, and wheels. In order to design this system, various researches on each part of it must be conducted. In this study, we dealt with the optimum design for the frame part of the shuttle car designed from previous studies on the strength of the frame with respect to the number of cross beams to minimize the weight of the shuttle car and to satisfy design criteria of cargo-handling systems in container terminal. For the optimization of the frame, thicknesses of each beam were adopted as design variables, the weight of the frame as objective function, and stress and deflection per unit length as constraint condition.
According to the increase of container flows and the appearance of large-sized container vessels, the container handling equipment in ports is evolving continuously. This research introduces the simulation model for evaluating in detail the mechanical productivity of container cranes. The model considers a single trolley and dual trolleys as the mechanism of a container crane and a single lift, a twin lift, and a tandem lift as the spreader type of it. Additionally, the detail specifications such as the dimension and the speed of a container crane are inputted and the kinematic characteristics of it are simulated. The model also considers the size of a vessel, the storage position of containers in the vessel, and the weight of containers as external physical constraints. Experimental conditions can be configured conveniently because various parameters in the model are separated. Moreover, the model can accommodate flexibly new equipment types and the changes of the existing equipment because it is designed and developed in object-oriented concept.
This study presents a method for estimating the productivity of the ship operation in container terminal. The productivity of the ship operation is influenced by the specifications of each piece of equipment and layouts of the terminal, and the operational strategies. The handling equipments considered in this study are QC(Quay Crane), RMGC (Rail mounted gantry crane), and Transporter (TR). The simulation experiments are conducted to estimate the QC productivity based on the change of the design factors.

This paper considers the problem of scheduling loading and unloading operations of a crane in a railway terminal motivated from rail-road container transshipment operations at Uiwang Inland Container Depot (ICD). Unlike previous studies only considering the total handling time of containers, this paper considers a bi-criteria objective of minimizing the weighted sum of the total handling time and tenant service time. The tenant service time is an important criterion in terms of terminal tenants who are private logistics companies in charge of moving containers from/to the terminal using their trucks. In the rail-road container shipment yard, the tenant service time of a tenant can be defined by a time difference between beginning and finishing loading and unloading operations of a crane. Thus, finding a set of sequences and time of the crane operations becomes a crucial decision issue in the problem. The problem is formulated as a nonlinear program which is improved by linearizing a nonlinear constraint in the model. This paper develops a genetic algorithm to solve the problem and performs a case study on the Uiwang ICD terminal. Computational experiment results show that the genetic algorithm shows better performance than commercial optimization solvers. Operational implications in terms of tenants are drawn through sensitivity analyses.

One of the important tactical problems for the efficient operation of container terminals is to determine the usage of storage space There are two different strategies for stacking containers; mixing strategy, in which outbound containers and inbound containers are mixed in the same block, and segregating strategy, in which outbound containers and inbound containers are stacked in blocks different from each other The performance of space allocation strategies also depends on the types of handling equipment in the yard and the number of handling equipment allocated to each block. A simulation model is developed considering various handling characteristics of yard cranes. Performances of various space and equipment allocation strategies are evaluated by using the simulation model.
The issues were studied of an open-source scaling drone imagery platform, called WebODM. It is known that processing drone images has a high demand for resources because of many preprocessing and post-processing steps involved in image loading, orthophoto, georeferencing, texturing, meshing, and other procedures. By default, WebODM allocates one node for processing. We explored methods to expand the platform's capability to handle many processing requests, which should be beneficial to platform designers. Our primary objective was to enhance WebODM's performance to support concurrent users through the use of container technology. We modified the original process to scale the task vertically and horizontally utilizing the Kubernetes cluster. The effectiveness of the scaling approaches enabled handling more concurrent users. The response time per active thread and the number of responses per second were measured. Compared to the original WebODM, our modified version sometimes had a longer response time by 1.9%. Nonetheless, the processing throughput was improved by up to 101% over the original WebODM's with some differences in the drone image processing results. Finally, we discussed the integration with the infrastructure as code to automate the scaling is discussed.
