  • When a manipulator makes contact with an object having position uncertainty, performance measures vary considerably with the control law. To achieve the optimal solution for this problem, an unique objective function that weights time and impact force is suggested and is solved with the help of variational calculus. The resulting optimal velocity profile is then modified to define a sliding mode for the impact and force control. The sliding mode control technique is used to achieve the desired performance. Sets of experiments are performed, which show superior performance compared to any existing controller.

  • This paper deals with strength analysis of tooth and method of manufacture of external tooth profile in harmonic drive. From the calculation of load imposed on the contact teeth, moximum contact stress is investigated to design the addendum modification coefficient. New tooth profile of the external gear is generated according to the law of gearing, assuming that internal gear has involute tooth profile. External tooth profile can't be manufactured by conventional exclusive tools which have pressure angle of 20$\circ$. The method to design cutter tooth profile is presented.

  • In this work, we present the classical formulation for the antiplane problem of a eletro-viscoelastic materialswith total sliprate dependent friction and write the corresponding variational formulation. In the second step, we prove that the solution converges to the solution of the corresponding electro-elastic problem as the viscosity converges to zero.

  • The aim of this study is to examine the frictionless double receding contact problem for two functionally graded (FG) layers pressed with a uniformly distributed load and resting on a homogeneous half plane (HP) using analytical and numerical methods. The FG layers are made of a non-homogeneous material with an isotropic stress-strain law with exponentially varying properties. It is assumed that the contact at the FG layers and FG layer-HP interface is frictionless. The body force of the FG layers and homogeneous HP are ignored in the study. Firstly, an analytical solution for the contact problem has been realized using the theory of elasticity and the Fourier integral transform techniques. Then, the problem modeled and two-dimensional analysis was carried out by using the ANSYS package program based on FEM. Numerical results for contact lengths and contact pressures between FG layers and FG layer-HP were provided for various dimensionless quantities including material inhomogeneity, distributed load width, the shear module ratio, and the heights of the FG layers for both methods. The results obtained using FEM were compared with the results found using the analytical formulation. It was found that the results obtained from analytical formulation were in perfect agreement with the FEM study.

  • Finite-element methods are used to study non-adhesive, frictionless rough contact of elastic and plastic solids. Roughness on spherical surfaces is realized by self-affine fractal. True contact area between the rough surfaces and flat rigid surfaces increases with power law under external normal loads. The power exponent is sensitive to surface roughness as well as the curvature of spherical geometry. Surface contact pressures are analyzed and compared for the elastic and plastic solids. Distributions of local contact pressure are shown dependent on the surface roughness and the yield stress of plastic solids.

  • Impact is the most common type of dynamic loading conditions that give rise to impulsive forces and affects the vibrational characteristics of mechanical systems . Since the real impact force and acceleration at the contact surface are measured indirectly through the sensors, the measured outputs can be a little different from the real impact responses. In this study, the contact force model based on the Hertz law is proposed in order to predict the impact force correctly. To investigate the influence of the position of the sensor attached to the impacting bodies, the two kinds of sensors were used. Finally, the contact force model obtained by drop test was applied to predict the impact force between the moving part and the stopper in magnetic contactor.

  • This paper proposes a way to predict electrical lifetime of a relay using Accelerated Life Testings (ALTs). The relay of interest mounting on printed circuit boards is usually under an inrush current stress. The inrush current is generated and accelerated through controlling a lamp switching device in the ALT. We find that the dominant failure mechanism under high levels of inrush current would be contact welding in the contact surface of the relay and the contact welding process is accelerated according to increase in inrush current. The electrical lifetime model based on Inverse Power Law in term of inrush current is proposed, and parameters characterizing relay's lifetime distribution are statistically estimated using ALTA 6 PRO software.

  • The aim of this paper was to examine the continuous and discontinuous contact problems between the functionally graded (FG) layer pressed with a uniformly distributed load and homogeneous half plane using an analytical method and FEM. The FG layer is made of non-homogeneous material with an isotropic stress-strain law with exponentially varying properties. It is assumed that the contact at the FG layer-half plane interface is frictionless, and only the normal tractions can be transmitted along the contacted regions. The body force of the FG layer is considered in the study. The FG layer was positioned on the homogeneous half plane without any bonds. Thus, if the external load was smaller than a certain critical value, the contact between the FG layer and half plane would be continuous. However, when the external load exceeded the critical value, there was a separation between the FG layer and half plane on the finite region, as discontinuous contact. Therefore, there have been some steps taken in this study. Firstly, an analytical solution for continuous and discontinuous contact cases of the problem has been realized using the theory of elasticity and Fourier integral transform techniques. Then, the problem modeled and two-dimensional analysis was carried out by using ANSYS package program based on FEM. Numerical results for initial separation distance and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for continuous contact case; the start and end points of separation and contact stress distributions between the FG layer and homogeneous half plane for discontinuous contact case were provided for various dimensionless quantities including material inhomogeneity, distributed load width, the shear module ratio and load factor for both methods. The results obtained using FEM were compared with the results found using analytical formulation. It was found that the results obtained from analytical formulation were in perfect agreement with the FEM study.

  • Among various export financing, forfaitng and factoring give a comfort to exporters as those special financing schemes are extended to them on a without recourse basis. This is good for the exporters in terms of financing and risk cover of buyer or LC issuing banks. To enjoy this benefit, the SME exporters should, however, know the risks involved in sales contract. For example, if the export and importer set Korean law as governing law in the sales contract especially for open account exports, the exporter's receivables might be not welcome by factors according to provisions of Korean Conflict Law and it's application. Those regulations tell that the factor's position would be unstable when the sales contact limit exporter's assignment of receivables to the factor when the sales contract is subject to Korean law. Also the exporters should know related regulation of importer which might affect the assignment of receivables as well. This paper suggests the Korean exporters take internationally recognized agreement/convention such as UNI|DROIT Convention on International Factoring, UN Convention on the Assignment of Receivables in International Trade.

  • It is very important for a teacher to know what his students know and what they do not; however, it seems not true for the most Korean secondary school science techers. This study tried to find students' misconception Newton's third law and the sources of the misconceptions. The researcher examined 609 students from middle schools, high schools, and college. In this study, students' understanding on Newton's third law were examined by school level, sex, stream (science and liberal arts), and departments. The following results were obtained by this study. 1. Students' understanding seemed to be improved continuously from middle school to university; however, their misconception (the most frequent incorrect selection of options of the test items) did not changed very much. 2. Students' answers were significantly affected by size of objects, existence of physical contact and the existence of life in the objects. 3. The answer were significantly affected by the source of attraction. 4. The answer to Newton's third law were affected by the magnitude of potential force which the target bodies have, state of motion, velocity, weight, friction and acceleration. This study could show the sources of the misconception on Newton's third law. The identified sources could be very useful for designing an instruction to teach Newton's third law in schools and universities.
