  • The CCD photometric observations of the W UMa type contact binary GX Aur were performed for 33 nights from 2004 to 2008 using a 2K CCD camera and Johnson BVRI filter system attached to the 61cm reflector at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory (SOAO). From our observations, the first BVRI light curves of GX Aur were completed and eight new times of minima (primary: 4, secondary: 4) were obtained. All the times of minima including our timings were collected and analyzed to see the dynamical behavior of GX Aur system. Intensive analysis of our BVRI lightcurves with the recent Wilson-Devinney binary model shows that GX Aur is an over-contact binary whose component stars have equal mass and time-variable spots.

  • We completed the light curves of near-contact binary system AX Dra for 11 nights from March 2001 to May using the 61-cm reflector and VR filters at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory. From our observations, seven new times of minimum light (three timings to. primary eclipse, four. for. secondary) and the light elements consistent with recent observations were determined. Using the Wilson-Devinney binary code and the q-search method, we analyzed our VR light curves for various Roche configurations and mass ratios. As the results, we found the eclipsing binary AX Dra to be the FO Vir-type near-contact binary system interpreted as a detached or a semi-detached system, with the secondary filling its Roche lobe and the primary almost. Unlike the statistical study(Shaw 1994) of the FO Vir-type near-contact binary system, our VR light curves showed the O'Connell effect of all the same type and it's dimensions was about $0^{m}.008$.

  • Light curves of two near-contact binaries DO Cas and SW Lyn are analyzed to investigate their Roche configurations. We made new BVR observations for DO Cas and employed the published observation data for SW Lyn. Our four night observations for DO Cas were secured over 8 days so that the contamination by the intrinsic light variation is minimized. Based on the WD model, we found that DO Cas could be classified as a near-contact binary, while SW Lyn is better described by semi-detached configuration. Furthermore it is also possible to classify DO Cas as a contact binary. It appears that there are ambiguities in the class of near-contact configuration, and further observations and re-analysis are required to establish the near-contact nature of binary systems.

  • CCD photometric observations of a W UMa type contact binary AH Cnc were performed for ten nights from December 1998 to May 1999 using a PM512 CCD camera and BVI filters attached to the 61㎝ reflector at Sobaeksan Optical Astronomy Observatory. New BVI light curves were analyzed with contact Mode 3 of the Wilson-Devinney binary model. We obtained photometric solutions and Roche geometry of this binary system. Through the analysis of the (O-C) diagram with all times of minimum light published so far and including hour's secular variations of orbital period and the mass transfer rate were calculated.

  • The BVR CCD full light curves of ZZ Aur were obtained as one of the near-contact binary observing programs at the Sobaek Mt. Observatory during Feb. 2000 - Feb. 2001. From the present observations, three primary and seven secondary times of minimum light were obtained. The photometric solutions have been found using the Wilson and Divenny model.

  • I describe a series of processes, including hierarchical fragmentation, gravitational scattering, Kozai cycles within triple systems, tidal friction and magnetic braking, that I believe are responsible for producing the modest but significant fraction of stars that are observed as contact binaries. I also discuss further processes, namely heat transport, mass transport, nuclear evolution, thermal relaxation oscillations, and further magnetic braking with tidal friction, that influence the evolution during contact. The endpoint, for contact, is that the two components merge into a single star, as recently was observed in the remarkable system V1309 Sco. The single star probably throws off some mass and rotates rapidly at first, and then slows by magnetic braking to become a rather inconspicuous but normal dwarf or subgiant. If however the contact binary was part of a triple system originally-as I suggested above was rather likely-then the result could be a $widish$ binary with apparently non-coeval components. There are several such known.

  • The electrode contact poling is one of the efficient tools to induce a stable polar order of nonlinear optical (NLO) chromophores in the solid film. Self-assembled NLO chromophores with high electro-optic (E-O) activities were utilized for quantitative determination of the chromophore order induced under contact poling by spectroscopic changes. We found that NLO chromophores rarely decompose under the high electric field during contact poling. The absorption spectra were de-convoluted into a sum of Gaussian components to separate energy transitions for a binary composite system which contains a secondary guest chromophore AJC146 in the self-assembled chromophore HDFD. Poling efficiency was significantly improved in the binary system compared to the individual components.

  • We present new BVR CCD photometric light curves for the close binary star V445 Cep. A new photometric solution and absolute physical dimensions of the system were derived by applying the Wilson-Devinney program to our observed light curves and radial velocity curves published by Pych et al. The evolutional status of V445 Cep was found to coincide with those of the general low mass ratio contact binary systems.

  • The EB type contact binaries show large temperature difference $(\mid\bigtriangleup T\mid\geq1,000K)$ between two components. Thus we have modified the mode 3 of the WD program to adjust albedos, limb darkening coefficients and gravity darkening exponents for both components of such binaries, while the values for those parameters should be same for both components in the original WD program. Both of the modified and the original versions have been applied to the EB type contact binaries such as DO Cas, GO Cyg, and FS Lup. The computed light curves with modified version fit better to the observations.

  • The light curves of the representative 6 contact binary stars observed by OGLE Project of searching for dark matter in our Galaxy have been analyzed by the method of the Wilson and Devinney Differential Correction to find photometric solutions. The orbital inclinations of these Devinney Differential Correction to find photometric solutions. The orbital inclinations of these binaries are in the range of $52^{circ}-69^{\circ}$ which is lower than that of the solar neighborhood binaries. The Roche lobe filling factor of these binaries are distributed in large range of 0.12 - 0.90. Since absence of spectroscopic observations for these binaries we have found masses of the 6 binary systems based on the intersection between Kepler locus and locus derived from Vandenberg isochrones in the mass - luminosity plane. Then absolute dimensions and distances have been found by combining the masses and the photometric solutions. The distances of the 6 binary systems are distributed in the range of 1 kpc- 6 kpc. This distance range is the limiting range where the contact binaries which have period shorter than a day are visible. Most contact binaries discovered in the Baade window do not belong to the Galactic bulge.
