  • This paper analyzes whether local public expenditures have converged during the 1985-2011 periods in Korea, using the sixteen metropolitan and provincial governments data. We analyze the convergence of per capita real local public expenditures in terms of both static view and dynamic view of convergence. Furthermore, we derive the estimating equation for per capita real local government expenditure growth function from theoretical model based on Skidmore et al.(2004)[23]. The main results from empirical analyses are such that an increase in aged people helped local government expenditures increase. Also, we found that the convergence speed of economic expenditure is greater than that of social welfare expenditure. Similarly the convergence speed of public capital expenditure is greater than that of public consumption expenditure. In the future we had better examine the convergence of local public goods taking into account their congestion rates.

  • In this research, we consider a smart grid network of electricity with multiple consumers connected to a monopolistic provider. Each consumer can be informed the real time price changes through the smart meter and updates his consumption schedule to minimize the energy consumption expenditures by which the required power demand should be satisfied under the given real time pricing scheme. This real-time decision making problem has been recently studied through game-theoretic approach. The present paper contributes to the existing literature by incorporating storage appliance into the set of available household appliances which has somewhat distinctive functions compared to other types of appliances and would be regarded to play a significant role in energy consumption scheduling for the future smart grid. We propose a game-theoretic algorithm which could draw the optimal energy consumption scheduling for each household appliances including storage. Results on simulation data showed that the storage contributed to increase the efficiency of energy consumption pattern in the viewpoint of not only individual consumer but also whole system.

  • This paper examines the aspects of changes in China's consumer market since the mid-1980s. By comparing urban and rural residents' expenditures, I find that the rural consumer market has exhibited extraordinary growth. Over the past decade, the consumption growth rate and average propensity to consume by rural residents have surpassed those of their urban counterparts, with the former's consumption patterns becoming increasingly similar to the latter's. Such a phenomenon prevails in rural areas which neighbor second-and third-tier cities where urbanization is progressing rapidly. These findings imply that Korean companies need to diversify their export goods in line with China's expanding rural markets while further differentiating their product composition to satisfy the heterogeneous demands in urban areas. With regard to the government, efforts must be made to strengthen the export cooperative system so that it targets not only urban but also rural markets in China.

  • the purpose of this study was to compare the consumption of personal and material resources between working wives and full-time housewives and to conceptualize the cost of working wives by the degree of additional consumption of the resources. The proposed costs of working wives included the long working time (time cost), the short leisure time(energy cost), the increase of expenditures fro services and the serious role conflict(psychological cost). Three methods, t-test, simple regression analysis, multiple regression analysis/tobit analysis were used to analyse the differences in consumption of resources between two groups. On the basis of the analysed results, the employment cost of working wives were discussed.

  • This study attempts to analyse the food consumption expenditure patterns of wage-Earner's Households n terms of the changes in income during 1975∼1985. For the purpose of these time-series analysis and cross-section analysis, household survey data 'Annual Report on the Family Income and Expenditure Survey'- was used. The main results can be summarized as follows : 1. The proportion of the food expenditures has decreased with the increased of income in the city families during 1975∼1985. The Income-Elasticity and limit spending habits has decreased with the increase of income in the city families during 1975∼1985. 2. Analyzing the structure of the food consumption of each income class, the results reflected the Engel's law. That is to say, the higher income was, the more absolute expense for food was, but the rate of it was.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the change according to income bracket and the trade-off between expenditure items by analyzing expenditure patterns of the urban households as a reset of the IMF. The results of this study are as follows; The composition percentage and the amount of consumption expenditure of urban households after IMF decrease in all classes. But the change of composition percentage by the decrease of consumption expenditure is different in every class. The percentage of decrease of the upper class is higher than that of the lower class in an essential expenditure of household, which is food. And the percentage of decrease of the lower class is higher than that of the higher class in the discretionary expenditures such as clothes and education.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify the preferred types and consumption patterns of food away from home by socio-demographic factors including cohort groups, sex. and consumption patterns consisting of 6 types. Data were collected from 412 respondents by questionnaire method in April through May 2002. Regression results indicate that sex, age, family income, family type and size as well as the consumption patterns were significant in explaining the determinants of food away from home expenditures. Four logit function (each for Korean, American, Japanese, and bunsik) results showed that each type of food away from home was likely to vary depending on socio-demographic factors (i.e., cohort groups and sex) and the consumption patterns (i.e., convenience and simple, distinction and variety, tradition oriented, foreign design, health and quality oriented, sensible taste and mood). Similarities and differences in food away from home types are discussed, and future implications for food and nutrition specialists as well as food industrial marketers are provided.

  • This study identifies the fashion luxury customer segments grouped by expenditures and the number of purchasing brands to verify the effects of perceived luxury consumption values on the intention to maintain a brand relationship for each group. A survey questionnaire was developed and implemented to collect data to measure fashion luxury expenditures, number of purchasing brands, luxury customer values, intention to maintain brand relationships, and demographic variables. A total of 326 responses were analyzed by factor analysis, multiple regression, one-way ANOVA, and $X^2$ analysis with SPSS18.0. Respondents were grouped by luxury expenditures; in addition, the number of purchasing brands were grouped into four segments of Switching/Heavy (31.6%), Switching/Light (19.9%), Loyal/Heavy (31.3%), and Loyal/Light (7.2%) Customer Group, that was different in terms of age and marital status. When the luxury customer value for the most patronized luxury brand was factor analyzed, five distinctive sub dimensions were identified, such as Social Value, Aesthetic/Expressive Value, Experiential Value, Quality Value, and Economic Value. For the Loyal/Heavy Group, the Experiential Value had a significant effect on the customer intention to maintain a brand relationship. For the Loyal/Light group, the Aesthetic /Expressive and Economic Value had a significant effect, and for the Switching/Heavy and Switching/Light Group, Quality and Economic Value had a significant effect on the customer intention to maintain a brand relationship. In conclusion, each luxury customer value in the behavioral segments works differently in influencing the intention to maintain a brand relationship. In addition, the implications for retail strategy were discussed based on the findings.

  • Using 2004 Household Income & Expenditure Survey, this study investigated difference in consumption pattern among the households with the different number of children, and estimated the monetary cost of rearing children. The findings were as following. First, the major consumption categories for raising children included the expenditures for education, food materials, utility, health, and communication. Second, the potential consumption needs for clothing & foot ware and culture & entertainment were not fully satisfied for the households with children compared to the households without children. Third, in the households with one child, the level of consumption was about two thirds of that in the households without children. It was slightly above half in the households with two children. Lower consumption level of the households with children was mainly due to the burden of the educational expenditure. Forth, the average monthly cost of raising children was estimated by 680 thousands Won for one child, and 104 thousand Won for two children. Lastly, the implications for the fertility policy and the methods for the estimation of the child cost were suggested based on the results.

  • This paper tries to estimate price and quality effects in US cross - sectional fisheries demand analysis using 1987-88 Nationwide Food Consumption Survey Data. The estimated results support to the hypothesis of quality effects in cross - sectional prices, which had been already proven by Cox and Wohlgenant(1986). But Since all zero observations for the respective incomes, expenditures and quantities are eliminated for the ease of computation, it may yield inconsistent estimates from selectivity bias.
