  • A new stress, load and displacement controlled direct shear apparatus has recently been developed at the Hyundai Institute of Construction Technology This direct shear apparatus is capable of testing of rock joint under constant normal stiffness, constant normal stress or constant normal load boundary conditions. This paper describes this direct shear apparatus and illustrates results of shear tests at constant normal stress condition, constant normal load condition and constant normal stiffness condition with dental stones which have a same joint roughness and unconfined compressive strength.

  • Apart from the geometric features of the rock joints, the shear characteristics of rock mass subject to shear force are also significantly affected by the boundary conditions in the neighborhood of the rock mass. The boundary conditions of the rock mass can be classified into 4 categories according to the stress state of the rock joint, of which the constant normal load (CNL) is the most used for shear test and produces the lowest shear strength and different behavior. In this study, the shear behavior under constant normal stiffness condition was able to replicated by the graphic method normalized by the test results under constant normal stress condition.

  • The characteristics of a rock joint which influence the stability of rock mass structures, such as the cut slopes and the tunnels, are largely controlled by the conditions of the rock joint as well as its boundary conditions. Boundary conditions can be represented by assuming that the deformability(or stiffness) of the rock mass surrounding the joints is modelled by a spring with stiffness. A new direct shear apparatus is developed in this study, which adapts a servo control system using PID algorithm. This apparatus can be used to investigate the various aspects of shear characteristics of the rock joints at conditions of constant normal stress and constant normal stiffness and so on. It is possible that the behavior under the constant normal stiffness condition can be predicted by the normalized graphic method with results obtained from the tests in the constant normal stress condition.

  • The shear behavior of sawtoothed artificial joints grouted with cement milk was investigated in the laboratory under constant normal stress conditions. Tests were conducted on joints with asperities having inclinations of 16.7$^{\circ}$ and 26.6$^{\circ}$, compresive strengths having 15MPa and 47MPa under a given range of normal stresses varying from 0.76 to 1.91 MPa and at a free condition of pitching, rolling and dilatancy. Results show that the effect of asperities on shear strength increase is significant up to asperity height to grout thickness (t/a) ratio of 0.3∼1.0. Increase of cohesion is the main cause of shear strength increase in cement grouted sawtoothed artificial joints.

  • In this study, direct shear tests were carried out on the 30 rock joint samples in order to investigate the influence of roughness and normal stress on the shear behaviour. Joint roughness profiles were measured by use of 3D laser profiler, and then the samples were equally classified into three individual groups according to the roughness index of rock joints. Peak shear strength, residual shear strength, shear stiffness, dilation angle of rock joints were investigated in condition of five different constant normal load. Peak shear strength was increased as roughness index was increased, and the influence of roughness on strength was found to be more considerable in case of lower normal stress condition. Residual shear strength and shear stiffness were increased as roughness index and normal stress were increased. Finally dilation angle was decreased as normal stress was increased, but it was increased as roughness index was increased in the same normal stress condition.

  • The purpose of this paper is to develope an understanding of fundamental mechanism of shear behaviour between granite and concrete interfaces. The interface of pile socketed in rock can be modeled in laboratory tests by resolving the axisymmetric pile situation into the two dimensional situation under CNS(constant normal stiffness) direct shear condition. In this paper, the granite core samples were used to simulate the interface condition of piles socketed In granite. The samples were prepared in the laboratory to simulate field condition, roughness(angle, height), stress boundary condition, and then tested by CNS direct shear tests. This paper gives some points about shearing behaviour of socket piles into domestic granite through the analysis of CNS tests results.

The interface of pile socketed in rock can be modeled in laboratory tests by resolving the axi-symmetric pile situation into the two dimensional situation under CNS(constant normal stiffness) direct shear condition. The samples were prepared in the laboratory to simulate field condition, roughness(angle and height), stress boundary condition, and then tested by CNS direct shear tests. This paper describes shearing behaviour of socket piles into domestic granite through the analysis of CNS test results. It was found out that the peak shear strength increases with the angle of asperity and CNS value, and also the dilation increases with the angle of asperity but decreases with the CNS value.

  • A steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation was conducted to investigate the distribution of the Reynolds stress tensor inside tip leakage vortex of a linear compressor cascade. Two different inlet flow angles ${\beta}=29.3^{\circ}$(design condition) and $36.5^{\circ}$(off-design condition) at a constant tip clearance size of $1\%$ blade span were considered. Classical methods of solid mechanics, applied to view the Reynolds stress tensor in the principal direction system, clearly showed that the high anisotropic feature of turbulent flow field was dominant at the outer part of tip leakage vortex near the suction side of the blade and endwall flow separation region, whereas a nearly isotropic turbulence was found at the center of tip leakage vortex. There was no significant difference in the anisotropy of the Reynolds normal stresses inside tip leakage vortex between the design and off-design condition.

  • This experiment is designed to determine the relationship between groomers' activities and stress. The experimenter worked with 2 female dogs and 3 male dogs owned by clients. They were 22 months old on an average and weighed 5.5kg on an average. The concentration of cortisol in blood was measured with radioimmunoassy(RIA). The concentration of cortisol in blood was high in the morning and evening and was low in the afternoon. In a normal condition, the concentration of cortisol in blood was $1.4{\mu}g/dL$, which increased to $4.98{\mu}g/dL$ after 1 hr of grooming, and then returned to normal at the termination of grooming. The survey shows that grooming acted as a stressor, which seems to have an influence on the health of dogs. So it is absolutely necessary that systematic and constant research should be conducted to reduce stress at the time of grooming.
