Temperature change affects consolidation behavior of soft clays. The increase of temperature in soft clays induces the increase of pore water pressure. The dissipation of the excess pore water pressure decreases volume and void ratio. Also, the consolidation rate is accelerated by high temperature which induces the decrease of viscosity of pore fluid. The effects of temperature on the consolidation behavior such as consolidation settlement, consolidation time, and pore water pressure were investigated in this study. A numerical analysis of hydro-mechanical (HM) and thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) behavior was performed. The combination of heat injection and sand drain for consolidating the soft ground, with varying temperature (40 and $60^{\circ}C$) and sand drain diameter (40, 60, and 80 mm), was considered. The results show that the temperature inside soil specimen increases with the increase of the temperature of heating source and the diameter of sand drain. Moreover, the heat injection increases the excess pore water pressure and, accordingly, induces additional settlement in overconsolidated (OC) state and reduces the consolidation time in normally consolidated (NC) state.

Soil properties, drain conditions and numerical analysis technique have great influence upon consolidation behavior. In relevant to the above described fact, this paper aims to examining the applicability of prediction model of consolidation as well as deformation characteristics for soft clayey foundation improved by sand drain. A case study for actual foundation of Kwangyang steel works was performed. Single drain consolidation model proposed by Hansbo and Biot's consolidation theory coupled with modified Cam-clay model developed during the research were employed for the FEM numerical analysis of the foundation. Both smear effect and drain capacity were taken into account for the analysis. Finally the applicability of the newly developed technique to the behavior of foundation composed of soft clay proved satisfactory.

Pioneering work by Terzaghi imparted scientific and mathematical bases to many aspects of this subject and many people use this theory to measure the consolidation settlement until now. In this paper, Finite Difference Methods for consolidation are considered. First, it is shown the stability criterion of Explicit scheme and the Crank-Nicolson scheme, although unconditionally stable in the mathematical sense, produces physically unrealistic solutions when the time step is large. it is also shown that The Fully Implicit scheme shows more satisfactory behavior, but is less accurate for small time steps. and then we need to decide what scheme is more proper to consolidation. The purpose of this paper is to suggest the pertinent scheme to consolidation.

The horizontal drain method by installing drains horizontally in the ground is often used to expedite the dispersion of pore water and to increase the strength of dredged soft clay under the action of gravity or vacuum. In this study a numerical analysis method is developed to predict the consolidation process of soft ground with horizontal drains. One-dimensional self-weight consolidation theory is extended tn three-dimensions] theory with appropriate boundary conditions of horizontal drains. In the condition of pore water drainage by gravity, the behavior of the dredged clay with horizontal drains is compared with that of the clay without drains. The influence of design factors of drains on consolidation process is also analyzed.

The analysis about consolidation characteristic in soft clay has been depending one-dimension consolidation analysis. but, drain and undrain zone are explicated as homogeneous by consolidation behavior following consoli- dated settlementsoft in soft clay. 1) Established sand drain in soft clay in many types, and measured water content, unconfined compression strength, vertical stress, horizontal stress, vertical settlement, pore water pressure. 2) Arranged the result from the test and numerically explicated effective stress, total stress, and effective stress path at the drain and undrain zone. 3) We also analyzed and comparied elastic and elastic-plastic in soft clay using measured data. The result analyzed does not approach to a special theory, but, it is well in accord with the result of other investigator's study in the same condition.

To improve the problem that the settlement curve of the consolidation theory of Terzaghi does not match well with the actual settlement curve, we included a secondary compression settlement and analyzed it by varying the beginning point and then obtained the following results. The current methods of calculating the compression index from the log𝜎 curve and the coefficient of consolidation from the time-dependent settlement curve for each consolidation pressure proved that the final settlement amount will be consistent after a long time, but the actual settlement amount will always be smaller than the predicted settlement amount during the settlement progress stage. The consolidation factors estimated by the curve fitting with the condition that the secondary compression begins in the second half of the primary compression showed similar values to the consolidation factors estimated by the curve fitting for the primary compression only, and the settlement curves were in better agreement throughout the compression. It showed different values, showing low validity. It can be inferred that secondary compression acts from the point when a significant portion of the excess pore water pressure is dissipated, and the loading stress begins to have more influence on the skeletal structure of the soil. Analysis results show that secondary compression begins at the range of 91 % to 98 % on the average degree of primary consolidation.

Artesian pressure exists in Yangsan site, the maximum value of which has been measured as high as 5 t/m$^2$. This paper deals with the prediction of consolidation settlement for the site with artesian pressure. The consolidation settlement at the site has been accelerated using vertical band drains. Since the artesian pressure gives lower effective stress than a static condition, its effect should be considered in the settlement prediction. This case study shows that the prediction of settlement and pore pressure dissipation agrees well with the measurements, when considering the artesian effect.

Packing characteristics of amorphous alloy particles were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, compositional analysis, micro-hardness test and finite element method (FEM). Electroless Ni-plating was made on the surface of the Cu-based amorphous particles before consolidation in ambient atmosphere at an intermediate region of glass transition and crystallization temperatures $(T_g\;and\;T_x)$. Some parts of the Ni-layer in the interfaces of the consolidated particles disappeared, while some of them still remained without appreciable change in compositions. No cracks or fractures were found in the particles, which may occur at low temperatures below or near $T_g$ as anticipated by the FEM analysis. Crystallization and change in hardness were not observed after consolidation.

Vertical drains are commonly used to accelerate the consolidation process of soft soils, such as dredged materials, because they additionally provide a radial drainage path in a deep soil deposit. In practice, vertical drains are commonly installed in the process of self-weight consolidation of a dredged soil deposit. The absence of an appropriate analysis tool for this situation makes it substantially difficult to estimate self-weight consolidation behavior considering both vertical and radial drainage. In this paper, a new method has been proposed to take into account both vertical and radial drainage conditions during nonlinear finite strain self-weight consolidation of dredged soil deposits. For 1-D nonlinear finite strain consolidation in the vertical direction, the Morris (2002) theory and the PSDDF analysis are adopted, respectively. On the other hand, to consider the radial drainage, Barron's vertical drain theory (1948) is used. The overall average degree of self-weight consolidation of the dredged soil is estimated using the Carillo formula (1942), in which both vertical and radial drainage are assembled together. A series of large-scale self-weight consolidation experiments being equipped with a vertical drain have been carried out to verify the analysis method proposed in this paper. The results of the new analysis method were generally in agreement with those of the experiments.
In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement and to gain a required shear strength for a given soft clay deposit, the preloading technique combined with a vertical drainage system has been widely applied. In this'study, the theory of axisymmetric consolidation which considers the variation of compressibility and permeability during the conslidation process, has ben developed. A computer program named AXICON for the analysis of axisymmetric nonlinear consolidation is developed by adopting an explicit finite difference method. Smear and well resistance effects are also considered. The AXICON is capable of analyzing the consolidation behavior of multi -layered deposits and simulates time dependent loading sequence. The results of AXICON are validated with analytical solutions of Hansbo and Barron, and compared with insitu settlements and pore pressures measured in a soft clay deposit.
