An analytical model of the stress field caused by sliding indentation of brittle materials is developed. The complete stress field is treated as the superposition of applied normal and tangential forces with a sliding blister approximation of the localized inelastic deformation occuring just underneath the indenter. It is shown that lateral cracking is produced by the sliding blister stress field and that median cracking is caused by the applied contact forces. The model is combined with an experimental volume change measurements to show that the relative magnitude of tensile stresses governing lateral crack and median crack growth varies with the magnitude of the applied load. This prediction is consistent with the different regimes of experimentally observed cracking in soda-lime glass.
The observation of the new biotite isograd (chlorite + chloritoid = andalusite + biotite) in the Mungyong coal field requires the modification of Harte and Hudson's (1979) metapelite grid which eliminates the stability field of staurolite + cordierite assemblages. The newly proposed metapelite grid by Ahn and Nakamura (2000) can define more properly the isograd reaction observed from nature. We discuss first topological interrelations between synthetic system (FASHO-, KFASHO-, KFMASH system) on an isobaric section at 2kbar, where phase relations are well constrained. The following discussion is concentrated on the topological relations between stable reactions. At the last, we discuss the petrogenetic significance of the Ahn's petrogenetic grid compared with theoretically computed grids. Ahn's petrogenetic grid is consistent with synthetic and natural system, and is one of the excellent example of KFMASH approximation in metapelite.
A theoretical study is made of the flow in a confined cylindrical container with differential rotating top and bottom disks. Two kinds of theoretical solution for the azimuthal velocity were obtained: one is an exact solution of Bessel function type and the other is an approximate solution of exponential function type which comes from WKB approximation. Both theoretical solutions are shown to be self consistent with each other as well as a good agreement with previous studies. Moreover, in a range of relatively low Reynolds number, the obtained solution of Bessel function type shows better result than previous solutions.
This paper deals with wave propagations in solid state electron plasmas from the view point of treating the plasma as a conducting fluid, and especially consideration is extended to the effect of diffusion on the permittivities and dispersion relations. The analysis is based on the conception of the self-consistent field approximation. It is shown for the cases of the specific physical configurations that the positions of the null elements in the permittivity tensors are not affected by the diffusion terms, and the diffusion effect appears only in the case of the space-charge wave. It is also shown that the magnitude of the real part of wave vector is in proportion to the 3/2nds power of the field in some regions.
In this thesis. we estimated the good reliability coefficient ${\beta}$$\sub$k/ that is unbiased, consistent and more efficient than Cronbach's ${\alpha}$$\sub$k/ in splitting of a test into several formats of subtests and several properties of ${\beta}$$\sub$k/ are also represented. The tables of coefficients of skewness and kurtosis are represented to test the significance of departures from normality. We got the cumulative normal plots of z'from the distribution which is departed from normality using the Bock's approximation procedure and we finally enumerated the transformed standardized scores z'and a new raw score X' which enable us to proceed further evaluation procedures depending on our assessment policy.
Occurrence of an electron (or H atom equivalent to one electron plus H+) transfer from $\alpha$- tocopherol $\alpha$(TOH) to a number of photosensitizers in theri triplet states were investigated by monitoring the ESR signal of $\alpha$-chromaoxyl radical ($\alpha$(TO.) in ethanolic solutions of $\alpha$TOH and the sensitizers under continuous illumination. Every sensitizer molecule examined, such as protocholorophyllide (Pchl), hematoporphyrin and rose bengal which are generally regarded as efficient type II photosensitizers and thus have long-lived triplet states, was found to actively participate in an electro transfer reaction with $\alpha$TOH even under air-saturation conditions, generating $\alpha$TOH complex as an intermediate in a fashion of Michaelis-Menten type of reaction. For the reaction of $\alpha$TOH with triplet Pchl, the rate law was derived by applying the steady approximation for the binary complex, triplet Pchl-$\alpha$TOH , which turned out to be well consistent with the kinetic data.
This paper considers we consider the estimation of copula parameters based on residuals in stochastic regression models. We prove that a semiparametric estimator using residual empirical distributions is consistent under some conditions and apply the results to the copula-ARMA model. We provide simulation results for illustration.

This paper presents some of the efforts by the authors towards numerical prediction of springing of ships. A time-domain Higher Order Boundary Element Method (HOBEM) based on cubic shape function is first presented to solve a complete second-order problem in terms of wave steepness and ship motions in a consistent manner. In order to avoid high order derivatives on the body surfaces, e.g. mj-terms, a new formulation of the Boundary Value Problem in a body-fixed coordinate system has been proposed instead of traditional formulation in inertial coordinate system. The local steady flow effects on the unsteady waves are taken into account. Double-body flow is used as the basis flow which is an appropriate approximation for ships with moderate forward speed. This numerical model was used to estimate the complete second order wave excitation of springing of a displacement ship at constant forward speeds.

We performed a total energy calculation of clean alumunum surfaces of three low indices based on a density functional theory with a local density approximation, using the Ceperly-Alder exhange correlation parametrized by Perdew and Zunger. Pseudopotentials were generated for Al of which the plane wave cut-off was 15Ry. We used Gaussian broadening of a Fermi level to accelerate the convergence of our calculation with the Gaussian energy smearing parameter of 0.005Ry. First, we determine the lattice constant of the aluminum of an face-centered-cubic structure to be 3.96 which is comparable to the experimental data of 4.05 . The cohesive energy of 4.20eV/atom and the bulk modulus of 0.775$\times$1012dyne/cm2 are also comparable to the experimental values of 3.39eV/atom and 0.772$\times$1012dyne/cm2, respectively. Then we investigated the surface relaxation of (100), (110) and (111) surfaces using a 9-layer slab separated by 6-layer thick vacuum. The results are consistent with the existing experimental results.
Observations of neutrino oscillations are very strong evidence for the existence of neutrino masses and mixing. From recent experimental results on neutrino oscillation, we find that neutrino mixing angles are quite consistent with the so-called tri-bi-maximal mixing pattern, but the deviation from observational results is non-negligible. However, the tri-bi-maximal mixing pattern is still useful as a leading order approximation and provides a good guideline to search for the flavor symmetry in the neutrino sector. We introduce the $S_4$ permutation symmetry as a flavor symmetry to the standard model of particle physics with additional particle contents of heavy right-handed neutrinos and scalar fields. Finally, we obtain the tri-bi-maximal mixing pattern as a mixing matrix in the lepton sector within the suggested model. To derive the required unitary mixing matrix for the neutrino sector, the double seesaw mechanism is utilized.
