  • Configuring optimization of wireless sensor networks, which can improve the network performance such as utilization efficiency and network lifetime with minimal energy, has received considerable attention in recent years. In this paper, a cross layer optimal approach is proposed for multi-source linear network and grid network under Rayleigh block-fading channels, which not only achieves an optimal utility but also guarantees the end-to-end reliability. Specifically, in this paper, we first strictly present the optimization method for optimal nodal number $N^*$, nodal placement $d^*$ and nodal transmission structure $p^*$ under constraints of minimum total energy consumption and minimum unit data transmitting energy consumption. Then, based on the facts that nodal energy consumption is higher for those nodes near the sink and those nodes far from the sink may have remaining energy, a cross layer optimal design is proposed to achieve balanced network energy consumption. The design adopts lower reliability requirement and shorter transmission distance for nodes near the sink, and adopts higher reliability requirement and farther transmission distance for nodes far from the sink, the solvability conditions is given as well. In the end, both the theoretical analysis and experimental results for performance evaluation show that the optimal design indeed can improve the network lifetime by 20-50%, network utility by 20% and guarantee desire level of reliability.

  • In the current paper, a cold forging sequence was developed to manufacture a precisely cold forged H/Lower, which is used as the air back unit in commercial automobiles. The preform shape of the H/Lower influences the dimensional accuracy and stiffness of the final product. The shape factor (SF) ratio and shape of the tools are considered as the design parameters to achieve adequate backward extrusion height and maintain appropriate thickness variations. The optimal conditions of the design parameters were determined by using an artificial neural network (ANN). To experimentally verify the optimal preform and tool shapes, the experiments of the backward extrusion of the H/Lower were executed. The process design methodology proposed in the current paper, can provide a more systematic and economically feasible means for designing the preform and tool shapes for cold forging.

  • In this study, the optimal dynamic isolation system for gas operated combat weapon has been investigated. For this purpose, firstly, the dynamic behavior of human induced by firing operations has been analyzed through a series of experimental works using the devised test setup. The characteristics of linear impulse has been compared under some conditions of support system. In order to design the optimal dynamic isolation system, parameter optimization process has been performed based on the simplified isolation system under constraints of moving displacement and transmitted force. Finally, the performance of the designed dynamic absorbing system has been evaluated by simulation.

  • Even though some standard developmental bioassay protocols for environmental assessment using sea urchins have already been described, there have not been many attempts to apply and modify these protocols with Korean species. Therefore, there is a strong need to establish standard bioassay protocols using sea urchins commonly found in Korea. Prior to developing a new protocol, it is essential to know the optimal conditions for the bioassay procedures. We investigated the optimal conditions (temperature, salinity, and embryo density) of the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius. The ideal temperature for developmental bioassay of S. intermedius was determined to be $15^{\circ}C$ and the time required for the embryo to become pluteus larva was 72 hr. The optimal range of salinity for the embryo toxicity using S. intermedius was between 30 to 32 psu, which is similar to the range found in the natural habitats of adult populations. The optimum density of embryos at the beginning of bioassays was 100 embryos/mL. When the assays were carried out at higher densities, the proportion of normally developed larvae decreased significantly.

  • Photovoltaic (PV) modules operate over a large range of conditions but manufacturer's information is not sufficient to determine their overall performance. Designers need a reliable tool to predict energy production from a photovoltaic module under all conditions in order to make a sound decision. The modeling method of photovoltaic (PV) module are useful to perform detailed analysis of PV system performance for changing meteorological conditions, verify actual rated power of PV system sizing and determine the optimal design of PV system and components. This paper indicates a modeling approach of PV module performance in terms of meteorological conditions and identifies validity of PV modules modeling by comparing measured with simulated value.

  • In this paper, we present and analyze a LQ (Linear Quadratic) inverse optimal state-consensus protocol for continuous-time multi-agent systems with undirected graph topology. By Lyapunov analysis of the state-consensus error dynamics, we show the sufficient conditions on the algebraic connectivity of the graph to guarantee LQ inverse optimality and closed-loop stability. A more relaxed stability condition is also provided in terms of the algebraic connectivity. Finally, a formation control protocol for multiple mobile robots is proposed based on the target LQ inverse optimal consensus protocol, and the simulation results are provided to verify the performance of the proposed LQ inverse formation control method.

  • Thermodynamic cycle analysis has been performed to maximize the liquid amount for two hydrogen liquefaction systems using two-stage GM(Gifford-McMahon) refrigerator. the optimal operating conditions have been analytically sought with real properties of normal hydrogen for the two-stage GM direct contact system and the two-stage GM precooled L-H (Linde-Hampson) system. In the precooled system, there existed optimal values for compressed mass flow and compressed pressure to maximize the liquefied mass. It was recommended to use a cryocooler, which had a large precooling capacity between 70 and 100K.

  • In the study, a design methodology for robust minimization of a warpage in injection-molded part is presented. Taguchi's parameter design method is integrated with a computer simulation tool for injection molding to search for best design with robustness against the process variability by noises. The proposed methodology is based on a two-stage process: (1) reducing a warpage in the part by optimizing the part geometry including the layout and size of ribs, and (2) additionally minimizing the warpage by optimizing process conditions. An example is used to illustrate the usefulness of the design methodology.
