In this paper, we propose a medical image registration technique combining the gradient vector flow and modified conditional entropy. The registration is conducted by the use of a measure based on the entropy of conditional probabilities. To achieve the registration, we first define a modified conditional entropy (MCE) computed from the joint histograms for the area intensities of two given images. In order to combine the spatial information into a traditional registration measure, we use the gradient vector flow field. Then the MCE is computed from the gradient vector flow intensity (GVFI) combining the gradient information and their intensity values of original images. To evaluate the performance of the proposed registration method, we conduct experiments with our method as well as existing method based on the mutual information (MI) criteria. We evaluate the precision of MI- and MCE-based measurements by comparing the registration obtained from MR images and transformed CT images. The experimental results show that the proposed method is faster and more accurate than other optimization methods.

In this paper, a nonlinear matrix inequality problem and a nonlinear optimization problem are proposed for obtaining a structured static output feedback controller. The proposed nonlinear optimization problem has LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) constraints and a nonlinear objective function. Using the conditional gradient method, the nonlinear optimization problem can be solved. A numerical example shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Sequence tagging is the task of predicting frame-wise labels for a given input sequence and has important applications to diverse domains. Conventional methods such as maximum likelihood (ML) learning matches global features in empirical and model distributions, rather than local features, which directly translates into frame-wise prediction errors. Recent probabilistic sequence models such as conditional random fields (CRFs) have achieved great success in a variety of situations. In this paper, we introduce a novel discriminative CRF learning algorithm to minimize local feature mismatches. Unlike overall data fitting originating from global feature matching in ML learning, our approach reduces the total error over all frames in a sequence. We also provide an efficient gradient-based learning method via gradient forward-backward recursion, which requires the same computational complexity as ML learning. For several real-world sequence tagging problems, we empirically demonstrate that the proposed learning algorithm achieves significantly more accurate prediction performance than standard estimators.

In this paper, a nonlinear optimization problem is proposed to obtain a structured static output feedback controller for discrete time linear systems. The proposed optimization problem has LMI (Linear Matrix Inequality) constraints and a non-convex objective function. Using the conditional gradient method, we can obtain suboptimal solutions of the proposed optimization problem. Numerical examples show the effectives of the proposed approach.

We pose pattern classification as a density estimation problem where we consider mixtures of generative models under partially labeled data setups. Unlike traditional approaches that estimate density everywhere in data space, we focus on the density along the decision boundary that can yield more discriminative models with superior classification performance. We extend our earlier work on the recursive estimation method for discriminative mixture models to semi-supervised learning setups where some of the data points lack class labels. Our model exploits the mixture structure in the functional gradient framework: it searches for the base mixture component model in a greedy fashion, maximizing the conditional class likelihoods for the labeled data and at the same time minimizing the uncertainty of class label prediction for unlabeled data points. The objective can be effectively imposed as individual mixture component learning on weighted data, hence our mixture learning typically becomes highly efficient for popular base generative models like Gaussians or hidden Markov models. Moreover, apart from the expectation-maximization algorithm, the proposed recursive estimation has several advantages including the lack of need for a pre-determined mixture order and robustness to the choice of initial parameters. We demonstrate the benefits of the proposed approach on a comprehensive set of evaluations consisting of diverse time-series classification problems in semi-supervised scenarios.

Off-line handwritten character recognition is in difficulty of incomplete preprocessing because it has not dynamic and timing information besides has various handwriting, extreme overlap of the consonant and vowel and many error image of stroke. Consequently off-line handwritten character recognition needs to study about preprocessing of various methods such as binarization and thinning. This paper considers running time of watershed algorithm and the quality of resulting image as preprocessing For off-line handwritten Korean character recognition. So it proposes application of effective watershed algorithm for segmentation of character region and background region in gray level character image and segmentation function for binarization image and segmentation function for binarization by extracted watershed image. Besides it proposes thinning methods which effectively extracts skeleton through conditional test mask considering running time and quality. of skeleton, estimates efficiency of existing methods and this paper's methods as running time and quality. Watershed image conversion uses prewitt operator for gradient image conversion, extracts local minima considering 8-neighborhood pixel. And methods by using difference of mean value is used in region merging step, Converted watershed image by means of this methods separates effectively character region and background region applying to segmentation function. Average execution time on the previous method was 2.16 second and on this paper method was 1.72 second. We prove that this paper's method removed noise effectively with overlap stroke as compared with the previous method.
In this study, probabilistic steady seepage behavior of soil foundation beneath water retaining structures according to the location of cutoffs was studied. A Monte Carlo Simulation based on the random finite element method that considers the uncertainty and spatial variability of soil permeability was performed to evaluate the probabilistic seepage behavior. Fragility curves were developed by calculating the failure probability conditional on the occurrence of a given water level from the probability distribution obtained from Monte Carlo simulations. The fragility curve was prepared for the flow quantities such as flow rate through foundation soil, uplift force on the base of structure, and exit gradient in downstream to examine the reliability of the water retaining structure and the foundation soil. From the fragility curves, the effect of the location of cutoff wall on the reliability of water retaining structure and foundation soil according to the rise in water level was studied.
