  • In our study, we develop a finite element model based on Archard's wear law to predict the cumulative wear and the evolution of the tool profile in friction stir welding (FSW) applications. Our model considers the rotational and translational behaviors of the tool, providing a comprehensive description of the wear process. We validate the accuracy of our model by comparing it against experimental results, examining both the predicted cumulative wear and the resulting changes to the tool profile caused by wear. We perform a detailed comparison between the predictions of the model and experimental data by manipulating non-dimensional coefficients comprising model parameters, such as element sizes and time increments. This comparison facilitates the identification of a specific non-dimensional coefficient condition that best replicates the experimentally observed cumulative wear. We also directly compare the worn tool profiles predicted by the model using this specific non-dimensional coefficient condition with the profiles obtained from wear experiments. Through this process, we identify the model settings that yield a tool wear profile closely aligning with the experimental results. Our research demonstrates that carefully selecting non-dimensional coefficients can significantly enhance the predictive accuracy of finite element models for tool wear in FSW processes. The results from our study hold potential implications for enhancing tool longevity and welding quality in industrial applications.

  • OBJECTIVES : This study develops an evaluation method, which is useful to inspect pavement condition of specific boroughs. This is because pavement condition is broadly divided into five grades via visual inspection, which does not consider the types of deteriorations, and is decided by an investigator having a subjective viewpoint. This visual inspection method is not a satisfactory method for accurate maintenance when various deteriorations occur. METHODS : The performance model considers several factors such as crack, rutting, and IRI. This method is also modified from borough SPI based on SPI (Seoul Pavement Index). Considering limited budget of borough, PI (prediction index) is suggested, which is related to the grade of pavement condition evaluation and type of materials. Practical correlation review is also conducted with statistical verification by using the Monte Carlo simulation. RESULTS : The results of the study show that modified criteria are reasonable. First, the comparison between the visual inspection result and the SPI result indicates that the R-square value is sufficiently high. Second, through the common section, each evaluation method could be compared, and the result shows considerable similarity, which increases when the range is modified. Finally, PI for predicting remaining life and the random number SPI have common parts, which means that each indicator would be adequate to be used as an evaluation method. CONCLUSIONS : Comparison and analysis results show that the developed evaluation method is reasonable for specific boroughs where financial support is inadequate for the evaluation process by using the newer equipment. Moreover, for more accurate evaluation method, previous visual inspection data should be utilized, and the database of inspection equipment have to be collected.

  • To establish area specific control strategies for the reduction of the ozone concentration, the Ozone Isopleth Plotting Package for Research(OZIPR) model has been widely used. However, the model results tend to changed by various input parameters such as the background concentration, emission amount of NOx and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and meteorological condition. Thus, sensitivity analysis should be required to ensure the reliability of the result. The OZIPR modeling results for five local government districts in the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA) in June 2000 were used for the sensitivity analysis. The sensitivity analysis result showed that the modeling result of the SMA being VOC-limited region be still valid for a wide range of input parameters' variation. The estimated ozone concentrations were positively related with the initial VOCs concentrations while were negatively related with the initial NOx concentrations. But, the degree of the variations at each local district was different suggesting area specific characteristics being also important. Among the five local governments, Suwon was chosen to identify other variance through the period from April to September in 2000. The monthly modeling results show different ozone values, but still showing the characteristics of VOCs-limited region. Limitations due to not considering long range transport and transfer from neighbor area, limitation of input data, error between observed data and estimated data are all discussed.

  • Research to discuss the fire performance of materials requires tools for measuring their burning characteristics and validated fire growth models to predict fire behavior of the materials under specific tire scenarios using the measured properties as input for the models. In this study, burning characteristics such as time to ignition, weight loss rate, flame spread, heat release rate, total heat evolved, and effective heat of combustion for four types of wood-based materials were evaluated using the cone calorimeter and inclined panel tests. Time to ignition was affected by not only surface condition and specific gravity of the tested materials but also the type and magnitude of heat source. Results of weight loss rate, measured by inclined panel tests, indicated that heat transfer from the contacted flame used as the heat source into the inner part of the specimen was inversely proportional to specific gravity of material. Flame spread was closely related with ignition time at the near part of burning zone. Under constant and severe external heat flux, there was little difference in weight loss rate and total heat evolved between four types of wood-based panels. More applied heat flux caused by longer ignition time induced a higher first peak value of heat release rate. Burning characteristics data measured in this study can be used effectively as input for fire growth models to predict the fire behavior of materials under specific fire scenarios.

  • Quantifying water balance components is crucial to understanding the basic hydrology and hydrochemistry. An importance of water balace studies has been emphasized from the need to grasp the actual condition of water resources and environmental changes including climatic changes. This paper proposes a method for evaluating water balance components based on the vegetation monitor using remote sensing data. Here, the evapotranspiration model adopts a direct method by using NDVI(Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) calculated from NOAA/AVHRR data and a detailed descriptionof water balance by using the evapotranspiration over the Korean Peninsula. In the study, areal distribution data sets of water balance components are produced using NDVI and a simplified water balance model. This method enables one to discuss the hydrological problems for North Korea where insufficient meteorological and hydrological data exist. The results obtained indicate the specific regional features on water inventory and fluctuation in water balance.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the changes of the relative impulse of the foot when carrying 5 types of schoolbag during level walking. Methods: Forty-four normal subjects were divided into 5 groups according to the method of carrying a bag: carrying no bag (condition 1), a backpack (condition 2), a shoulder bag (condition 3), a cross bag (condition 4) and a one-hand bag (condition 5). To evaluate the partial relative impulse, 7 areas were measured on the sole of a foot: the hallux, toe, 1st metatarsal head (Met1) and the 2nd & 3rd metatarsal heads (Met2/3), the 4th & 5th metatarsal heads (Met4/5), mid foot and heel. Repeated one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and independent t-tests were used to analyze the statistical data. Results: In the right foot, the relative impulses in every areas revealed no significant difference (p>0.05), however, the relative impulses at Met1, Met2/3, Met4/5 and heel were significantly different between the different conditions (p<0.05). There were significant differences on comparing the relative impulse between left and right foot within one condition, the mid foot in condition 2, as well as the hallux and Met1 in condition 3 (p<0.05). In condition 4, the toe, Met1, Met4/5 and mid foot were significantly different (p<0.05). The values at the hallux, toe and Met1 in condition 5 also were significantly different (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings showed that the symmetrical relative impulse of the foot was present in the case of carrying a backpack, but there was an extra load on specific regions and asymmetrical relative impulses in the case of carrying a shoulder bag, a across bag and a one-hand bag. • This study attempted to numerically verify specific effects on skin condition improvement by measuring and comparing changes in skin conditions such as pores, wrinkles, and sebum of LED masks for beauty devices with low output among light sources. 18 healthy women (4 weeks in the control group and 4 weeks in the experimental group) were conducted once a week for 8 weeks. As a result of measuring the skin condition of pores, wrinkles, and sebum, it was confirmed that the skin condition improved significantly as the LED irradiation progressed, and the difference between the groups by measurement period of the experimental group and the control group also showed significant differences in pores, wrinkles, and sebum (p< .001, p<.05). This is meaningful in that it can be presented as clinical information and quantitative data by preparing continuous data in an academic sense by proving the effect of improving the LED mask as a beauty device. It is also suggested that in the future, follow-up studies to prove more effective skin improvement will be conducted.
