저온하에서 시차열 수축에 의한 WMA 콘크리트의 휨강도 변화 (Variation of Flexural Strength of Warm-mix Asphalt Concretes Due to Differential Thermal Contraction at Low Temperatures)

  • PURPOSES : Hot-mix asphalt(HMA) concretes show a trend of strength increase at low temperature due to binder stiffness increase, but strength decrease below a ceratin low temperature. This is due to the differential thermal contraction(DTC) which is induced by a significant difference in coefficients of thermal contraction between aggregate and asphalt which is coated around the aggregate. This DTC damage is well known to occur in HMA concrete, but is not yet investigated in warm-mix asphalt(WMA) concretes. METHODS : To evaluate DTC damage on WMA in this study, the flexural strength($S_f$) of WMA concretes, which were produced at $30{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ lower temperature, was evaluated in comparison with that of HMA at -5, -15 and $-25^{\circ}C$. RESULTS : Most of WMA and HMA mixtures showed flexural strength increase down to $-15^{\circ}C$ and decrease below $-15^{\circ}C$. this type of strength reduction below $-15^{\circ}C$ can e explained as the effect of differential thermal contraction that is a consequence of the large difference in coefficients of thermal contraction between aggregate and asphalt. the property reduction of WMA is similar the result of previous works dealt with HMA mixtures. CONCLUSIONS : Even though there is some differences by materials used, the WMA concretes showed a significantly lower DTC damage than HMA concrete at low temperature at ${\alpha}$=0.05 level.

Guidelines for Joint Depth Determination and Timing of Contraction Joint Sawcutting for JCP Analyzed with Fracture Mechanics

  • An experiment with the objective of providing guidelines for joint depth determination and timing of contraction joint sawcutting to avert uncontrolled cement concrete pavement cracking has been conducted. Theoretical analysis and laboratory tests were performed to help in understanding and analyzing the field observation. Using two-dimensional elastic fracture mechanics, the influence of several parameters on crack propagation was delineated by a parametric study, involving initial notch ratio, joint spacing, Young's modulus and thermal expansion coefficient of concrete, temperature gradient, and modulus of subgrade reaction. Bimaterials made of rock plus cement mortar and rock plus polymer mortar were applied to the concrete in a field test section, and they were subjected to fracture tests. These tests have shown that fracture mechanics is a powerful tool not only in judging the quality of the jointed cement concrete pavement but also in providing a criterion for crack propagation and delamination. Based on fracture mechanics, a method is proposed to determine the joint depth, sawcut timing, and spacing of the jointed cement concrete pavement. This method has successfully been applied to a test section in Seohaean expressway. This study also summarizes the research results obtained from a field test for jointed plain concrete pavement, which was also carried out on the Seohaean expressway.

Technical and economical feasibility of using GGBS in long-span concrete structures

  • China accounts for nearly half of the global steel production. As a waste material or a by-product in the manufacture process, a large amount of blast furnace slag is generated every year. The majority of recycled blast furnace slag is used as an additive in low-grade blended cement in China (equivalent to the UK CEM II or CEM III depending on the slag content). The cost of using ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) in such low-grade applications may not be entirely reimbursed based on market research. This paper reports an on-going project at Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU) which investigates the feasibility of using GGBS in long-span concrete structures by avoiding/reducing the use of crack control reinforcement. Based on a case study investigation, with up to 50% of CEM I cement replaced with GGBS, a beneficiary effect of reduced thermal contraction is achieved in long-span concrete slabs with no significant detrimental effect on early-age strengths. It is believed that this finding may be transferable from China to other Asian countries with similar climates and economic/environmental concerns.

온도프리스트레싱 공법을 이용한 콘크리트교량의 보수보강에 관한 연구 (A study on Strengthening and Rehabilitation of Concrete girder bridge using Multi-Stepwise Thermal Prestressing Method)

  • The needs for strengthening and rehabilitation of the concrete bridges are a growing concern in many countries and has been emphasized in various researches and papers. Traditional external post-tensioning method using either steel bars or tendons is commonly used as a strengthening method. However, the method has some disadvantages such as stress concentration at the anchorages. Multi-stepwise thermal prestressing method is a newly proposed method for strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete girder bridges. Founded on a simple concept of thermal expansion and contraction of steel, the method is a hybrid method of external post-tensioning and steel plate bonding, combining the merits of two methods. In this paper, basic concepts on strengthening and rehabilitation of concrete girder are presented and an illustrative experiment is introduced.

  • The planar effects on the concrete pavements Is mainly due to the concrete shrinkage, subgrade friction, and thermal expansion or contraction. A complete understanding of analytical behavior of concrete pavement requires the development of computer model, stiffness matrix and equivalent nodal load matrices due to the effects mentioned above. A computer program, INPLANE II, has been written to evaluate the planar effects on concrete pavements. The planar effects determine to what degree the joint open and also help In determining factors which affect the joint stiffnesses and structural behavior of concrete Pavements.

  • Autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete is affected high temperature history. So to evaluate autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete accurately, thermal expansion in it should be removed. In this study, compensated autogenous shrinkage was calculated after gathering thermal expansion coefficient at early age experimentally. As a result of the study. Autogenous shrinkage of mass specimen (300 ${\times}$ 300 ${\times}$ 300mm) was remarkably higher than it of standard specimen (100 ${\times}$ 100 ${\times}$ 400mm). So it was found that compensation on thermal expansion should in evaluating autogenous shrinkage of high-strength mass concrete. And this study shows results on opc and similar own contraction, if used retarder.

화재피해를 입은 콘크리트의 폭력에 대한 양생조건의 영향성 검토에 관한 연구 (An Experimental Study on the Engineering Properties of Deteriorated Concrete by Fire Damage According to Curing Conditions)

  • In the existed study, a fire outbreak in a reinforced concrete structure looses the organism by the different contraction and expansion of hardened cement pastes and aggregate, and causes cracks by thermal stress, leading to the deterioration of the durability. So accurate diagnosis of deterioration is needed based on mechanism of fire deterioration in general concrete structures. Fundamental information and data on the properties of concrete exposed to high temperature are necessary for accurate diagnosis of deterioration. Therefore, this study is willing to propose fundamental data for accurate diagnosis of deteriorated concrete structure by fire damage with experiment according to the curing conditions.

  • 현재 콘크리트 교량의 보강 공법으로 주로 사용되는 외부 강봉을 이용한 후 인장 공법은 적용 범위가 넓고 교량의 극한 및 항복에 대한 강성을 증가시켜 휨보강 효과가 뛰어나지만, 모재 접합부의 응력집중, 비효율적인 하중 분배, 고정앵커부 설치, 유지관리의 어려움 등의 단점이 있다. 본 연구는 기존의 외부 강봉을 이용한 후 인장 공법이 가지는 단점을 보완하고 강판 접합 공법의 장점을 접목한 새로운 개념의 보강 공법으로 온도 프리스트레싱 보강 공법을 제안하고자 한다. 온도 프리스트레싱 보강 공법은 프리스트레싱 보강 강판을 다단계로 가열하여 가열 단계별로 콘크리트 교량의 하부에 접합한 뒤, 열원을 제거하여 발생하는 다단계 수축력을 보강에 필요한 프리스트레싱력으로 이용하는 보강 공법이다. 본 연구에서 제안된 온도 프리스트레싱 보강 공법의 적용을 위한 기초적인 연구로 프리스트레싱 보강 강판을 콘크리트 교량에 설치하기 위한 고정장치의 마찰저항 강도 실험과 온도 프리스트레싱에 의하여 콘크리트 교량에 도입되는 프리스트레싱 효과의 확인을 위한 응력 도입 실험을 실시하여 제안된 공법을 검증하였다.

  • Most bridges have expansion joints to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction without inducing large forces in the bridges. To evaluate the effects of earthquake-induced at expansion joints of concrete bridges, the first part of this paper deals with a collinear impact between concrete segments, which have the same cross section but different lengths. Especially, impact force, momentum, strain energy and kinetic energy are formulated in mathematically. These results are then used in the second part of this paper to simulate a realistic yet simple analysis of seismic pounding in concrete bridges. Analysis of seismic pounding in idealized concrete bridges is carried out by using a simple lumped-mass model and rationally determined values of the coefficient of restitution and the duration of impact.
