  • This paper investigates the effects of confinement reinforcement and concrete strength on nonlinear behaviour of reinforced concrete buildings (RC). For numerical application, an eleven-storey and four bays reinforced concrete frame building is selected. Nonlinear incremental static (pushover) analyses of the building are performed according to various concrete strengths and whether appropriate confinement reinforcement, which defined in Turkish seismic code, exists or not at structural elements. In nonlinear analysis, distributed plastic hinge model is used. As a result of analyses, capacity curves of the frame building and moment-rotation curves at lower end sections of ground floor columns are determined. These results are compared with each other according to concrete strength and whether appropriate confinement reinforcement exists or not, respectively. According to results, it is seen that confinement reinforcement is important factor for increasing of building capacity and decreasing of rotations at structural elements.

  • The post-fire behavior of structural elements and the cooling process has always been one of the main concerns of the structural engineers. The structures can be cooled at different rates, where they affect the structure's behavior. In the present study, a numerical model has been developed using the Abaqus program to investigate the effect of cooling rate on the post-fire behavior of the CFST column. To verify the model, results of an experimental study performed on CFST columns within a full heating and cooling cycle have been used. In this model, coMParison of the residual strength has been employed in order to examine the behavior of CFST column under different cooling rates. Furthermore, a parametric study was carried out on the strength of steel and concrete, the height of the specimens, the axial load ratio and the cross-sectional shape of the specimen through the proposed model. It was observed that the cooling rate affects the behavior of the column after the fire, and thus the higher the specimen's temperature is, the more effect it has on the behavior. It was also noticed that water cooling had slightly more residual strength than natural cooling. Furthermore, it was recognized from the parametric study, that by increasing the strength of steel and concrete and the load ratio, as well as modifying the cross-sectional shape from circular to square, residual strength of column at the cooling phase was less than that of the heating phase. In addition, with reducing column height, no change was witnessed in the column behavior after the cooling phase.

  • To predict the rheological behaviours along with the compressive strength of self-compacting concrete that incorporates environmentally friendly ingredients as cement substitutes, a comparative evaluation of machine learning methods is conducted. To model four parameters, slump flow diameter, L-box ratio, V-funnel time, as well as compressive strength at 28 days-a complete mix design dataset from available pieces of literature is gathered and used to construct the suggested machine learning standards, SVM, MARS, and Mp5-MT. Six input variables-the amount of binder, the percentage of SCMs, the proportion of water to the binder, the amount of fine and coarse aggregates, and the amount of superplasticizer are grouped in a particular pattern. For optimizing the hyper-parameters of the MARS model with the lowest possible prediction error, a gravitational search algorithm (GSA) is required. In terms of the correlation coefficient for modelling slump flow diameter, L-box ratio, V-funnel duration, and compressive strength, the prediction results showed that MARS combined with GSA could improve the accuracy of the solo MARS model with 1.35%, 11.1%, 2.3%, as well as 1.07%. By contrast, Mp5-MT often demonstrates greater identification capability and more accurate prediction in comparison to MARS-GSA, and it may be regarded as an efficient approach to forecasting the rheological behaviors and compressive strength of SCC in infrastructure practice.

  • In order to predict the behavior of column confined with spirals, the accurate estimation of confining stress by spiral is very important, Thus a number of models have been proposed for calculating the confining stress by spiral. However, in these equations, it was not considered the effects of the difference of mechanical characteristics related to the application of high strength concrete and spiral in structures. In this study, a model equation for calculation of the confining stress by spiral was proposed based on the test results investigated here. The proposed equation included the effects of concrete strength, spacing and yield strength of spirals

  • This paper describes an attempt to develop a new truss model for reinforced concrete beams failing in shear based on a rational behavioral model. The key idea incorporated with truss model is the internal force state factor which is able to express global state of internal force flow in cracked reinforced concrete beams subjected to shear and bending. A new truss model using internal force state factor may provide a comprehensive result of shear strength in reinforced concrete beams without web reinforcement.

  • The mechanical behaviors related to the strain rate effect and the tensile strength of high-strength concrete were investigated in this study. For this purpose, concrete cylinder specimens with 4 different compressive strengths from 232kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 1113kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ were tested and analysed on the mechanical properties(stress-strain relationship, compressive, modulus of elasticity, strain at peak compressive stress). From this experimental and analytical study, it seems that the current prediction model(ACI) for modulus of rupture need to be refined. Therefore, more refined equations for evaluation tensile strength of concrete are proposed.

  • Cracks on the surface of latex-modified concrete using ready mix concrete (R-LMC) are attributable to its sensitivity to air temperature, relative humidity and wind velocity. Insufficient curing under the windy condition causes plastic shrinkage cracks. The cracked areas should be replaced to prevent development of larger cracks. This paper investigated how the vibration resulted from crushing concrete for replacement of the partial cracked area affects bond strength of R-LMC at early age. To analyze bond strength of R-LMC, the commercial Finite Element (FE) program, ABAQUS Standard/Implicit version 6.12 was used, and bond strength was tested by ASTM C1583-04. The real vibration was applied to this FE model using an acceleration measurement equipment.

  • Recently, with the increase in the construction of ultra-high buildings and long-span structures, there is great demand for high-strength concrete which can reduce the structural weight and thickness of member sections. While developing high-strength concrete to meet performance requirements, certain issues at the design stage must also be considered. The issues include diseconomy from a great amount of per-unit cement, spalling failure by fire at ultra-high building, autogenous shrinkage caused by increased hydration activity of binder from use of a superplasticizer. Therefore, the purpose of this study is examined the strain characteristics of Fiber-reinforced-high-strength concrete(FRHSC), which differ from those of general concrete owing to autogenous shrinkage. Based on the experimental data, we proposed an autogenous shrinkage prediction model.

  • The compressive strength of self-compacting concrete (SCC) containing fly ash (FA) is highly related to its constituents. The principal purpose of this paper is to investigate the efficiency of hybrid fuzzy radial basis function neural network with biogeography-based optimization (FRBFNN-BBO) for predicting the compressive strength of SCC containing FA based on its mix design i.e., cement, fly ash, water, fine aggregate, coarse aggregate, superplasticizer, and age. In this regard, biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is applied for the optimal design of fuzzy radial basis function neural network (FRBFNN) and the proposed model, implemented in a MATLAB environment, is constructed, trained and tested using 338 available sets of data obtained from 24 different published literature sources. Moreover, the artificial neural network and three types of radial basis function neural network models are applied to compare the efficiency of the proposed model. The statistical analysis results strongly showed that the proposed FRBFNN-BBO model has good performance in desirable accuracy for predicting the compressive strength of SCC with fly ash.

  • The punching shear strength of concrete flat plates is one of the topics of intensive research in recent years by various concrete structures researchers. This paper reviews four current methods of analysing the punching shear strength at the corner-and edge-column positions of reinforced concrete flat plates. They include those recommended in the Australian Standard AS3600-1988, the American Concrete Institute ACI318-89 and the British Standard on Concrete Practices (BS8110) as well as the approach developed at the University of Wollongong, Australia. Based on half-scale model test results, a comparative study of these four analysis methods is made with regard to their limitation, accuracy and reliability. It is found that the Wollongong approach in general gives the best performance in predicting the punching shear strength of flat plates with torsion strips and those with spandrel beams. The Australian Standard procedure performs just as satisfactorily for flat plates with torsion strips but tends to be unsafe for those with spandrel beams. Both the ACI and the British methods are applicable only to flat plates with torsion strips; they also tend to give unsafe predictions for the punching shear strength.
