  • Due to the fact that the design of a reinforced concrete structure changes in accordance with its shape and assigned load, total automation of the design system has not been achieved. For instance, since there is no general rule about setting up reinforcing steel quantity and arrangement location, it is simply not feasible to automatically decide the reinforcing arrangement location. In this study, the ESO(evolutionary structural optimization) technique and its related issues will be discussed. The ESO techniques is determined the reasonable load path which is traveling of load between in-flow and out-flow at a concrete structure using numerical analysis. And the results applied to the steel arrangement in reinforced concrete structures. The optimal algorithm, which determines the terminal criteria during ESO process, has been updated by using the obtained results. And the load path within the member has been determined automatically.

  • Multivariate analysis is a statistical technique that investigates relationship between multiple predictor variables and response variable and it is a very commonly used statistical approach in cement and concrete industry. During model building stage, however, many predictor variables are included in the model and possible collinearity problems between these predictors are generally ignored. In this study, use of partial least squares (PLS) analysis for evaluating the relationships among the cement and concrete properties is investigated. This regression method is known to decrease the model complexity by reducing the number of predictor variables as well as to result in accurate and reliable predictions. The experimental studies showed that the method can be used in the multivariate problems of cement and concrete industry effectively.

  • A computational analysis of hygro-thermal and mechanical behaviour of concrete column at high temperature is presented. The objective of this study is to develop a finite difference model that simulates coupled heat and transport phenomena in reinforced concrete structures exposed to rapid heating conditions such as fires. The theoretical basis for the integrated finite difference method is presented to describe a powerful numerical technique for solving of fluid flow in porous media. The numerical results predict the phenomena of 'moisture clog' and the explosive spalling of concrete under fire. The investigations show that high-strength concrete(HSC) and normal-strength concrete(NSC) exposed to high temperature have different pore pressure buildup dependent on porosity, permeability and moisture contents. HSC has more possibility than NSC on spalling.

  • To study how stable the rubble mound breakwaters are, one can look to the research of wave induced seepage flow through the pores of the rubble mound. Seepage flow is generally generated by the difference between the water level around the breakwater during a typhoon. The existing stability analysis method of the rubble mound is the static analysis which simply considers the force equilibrium taking into account the horizontal force acting on the concrete block induced by a wave (calculated by Goda equation) and the vertical force induced by the weight inclusive of the concrete block, quarry run, filter, and armor layer above the slipping plane. However, this static method does not consider the wave-induced seepage flow in the rubble mound. Such seepage may decrease the stability of the rubble mound. The stability of a rubble mound breakwater under the action of seepage was studied based on the results of CFD software (OpenFOAM) and Limit Equilibrium Method (GeoStudio). The numerical analysis result showed that the seepage flow decreased the stability of the rubble mound breakwaters. The results of the numerical analyses also revealed the stability of the rubble mound was varied with time. Especially, the most critical state happened at the condition of overtopping the concrete block, acting strong uplift pressure raising along side and underneath the concrete block, and generating high pore pressure inside rubble mound due to seepage flow. Therefore, it may be necessary to conduct a dynamic analysis considering the effect of wave-induce seepage flow together with the static analysis.

  • This paper was to evaluate the high strength lightweight self-compacting concrete(HLSCC) manufactured by Nan-Su, which main factor, Packing Factor(PF) for mixing design, has been modified and improved. We have examined HLSCC performance at its fresh condition as well as its mechanical properties at the hardened condition. The evaluation of HLSCC fluidity has been conducted per the standard of second class rating of JSCE, by three categories of flowability(slump-flow), segregation resistance ability(time required to reach 500mm of slump-flow and time required to flow through V-funnel) and filling ability(U-box test) of fresh concrete. The compressive strength of HLSSC at 28 days has come out to more than 30MPa in all mixes. The relationship between the compressive strength-splitting tensile strength and compressive strength-modulus of elasticity of HLSSC were similar those of typical lightweight concrete. Compressive strength and dry density of HLSCC at 28 days from the multiple regression analysis resulted as $f_c=-0.16LC-0.008LS+50.05(R=0.83)\;and\;f_d=-3.598LC-2.244LS+2,310(R=0.99)$, respectively.

  • A new model predicting the nonlinear basic creep behaviour of concrete structures subjected to high multi-axial stresses is proposed. It combines a model based on the thermodynamic framework of the elasto-plastic continuum damage theory for time-independent material behaviour and a rheological model describing phenomenologically the long-term delayed deformation. Strength increase due to ageing is regarded. The general 3D solution for the creep theory is derived from a rate-type form of the uniaxial formulation by the assumption of associated creep flow and a theorem of energy equivalence. The model is able to reproduce linear primary creep as well as secondary and tertiary creep stages under high compressive stresses. For concrete in tension a simple viscoelastic formulation is applied. The material law is then incorporated into a finite element solution procedure for analysis of reinforced concrete structures. Numerical examples of uniaxial creep tests and concrete members show excellent agreement with experimental results.

  • By considering the creep characteristics of concrete core under eccentric compression, a creep model of concrete filled steel tubes (CFT) columns under eccentric compressive loads is proposed based on the concrete creep model B3. In this proposed model, a discrete element method is introduced to transform the eccentric loading into axial loading. The validity of the model is verified by comparing the predicting results with the published creep experiments results on CFT specimens under compressive loading, together with the predicting values based on other concrete creep models, such as ACI209, CEB90, GL2000 and elastic continuation and plastic flow theory. By using the proposed model, a parameters study is carried out to analysis the effects of practical design parameters, such as concrete mix (e.g. water to cement ratio, aggregate to cement ratio), steel ratio and eccentricity ratio, on the creep of CFT columns under eccentric compressive loading.

  • Although the adverse critisism have been continued that the concrete lining need or not, most tunnel engineer agree that the concrete lining needs to increase the tunnel safety To establish the concrete lining's quality improvement method, we grasp the basic problems in lining construction process and propose the lining construction methods to increase the concrete quality This paper present a reason of initial crack occurrence in the large section tunnel (4 lane wide span tunnel), lining and an improved method for crack minimization in construction process. It is also verified verify that the proposed method can give qualified concrete lining by carrying out the concrete injection model test and the numerical analysis of concrete flow.

  • Seismic safety evaluation of concrete gravity dams is very important because failure of concrete gravity dam may incur huge loss of life and properties around the dam as well as damage to dam structure itself. Recently, there has been growing much concerns about earthquake resistance or seismic safety of existing concrete gravity darns designed before current seismic design provisions were implemented. This research develops the dynamic fluid pressure calculation using 'added mass simulation'. The actual analysis using structural analysis package was performed. According to the analysis results, the vibration which is transverse to water flow seems to be very critical depending on the shape of the dam.

  • In recent year, the ultra high strength concrete has highly increased and been used in many parts of the world. However, the viscosity of the ultra high strength concrete is high because of a low water to binder ratio (w/b). So that in this pater, the shear stress and the shear strain rate are directly measured by the viscometer in order to estimate the rheological properties of the ultra high strength concrete and a linear regression analysis was carried out to determine the plastic viscosity and the yield stress as slope. According to the test results, the yield stress and plastic viscosity are correlated to slump-flow, V-funnel flow time, O-lot flow time
