  • Based on an experimental study, this study provides an equation to describe the shear strength of high-strength concrete deep beams with rectangular openings and without web reinforcements. Twenty-four concrete deep beams were tested with the variables of concrete strength, size of web opening, and shear span-to-depth ratio. The proposed equation is expressed as the sum of the shear strength provided by longitudinal bars and concrete. It is illustrated that the proposed equation predicts the load-carrying capacity of the deep beams more properly than the experimental equations proposed by other researchers.

  • As the residential spaces become high-rised and high-density, Multi-story buildings were constructed with transfer girders, Deep beams, wall foundations, floor diaphragms an shear walls which may have column offsets. Especially, In the analysis and design of Multi-story buildings, the lateral loads must be taken into account. But, there have been no appropriate theory and national design code for predicting ultimate shear strength of reinforced concrete Deep beams with web opening. Only empirical and semi-empirical formulas for predicting their ultimate load bearing capacities due to the complexities of the structural non-linearity and material heterogeneity. So this study analyze tow-dimensional finite element model that represents exactly the behavior of real structures with SBETA which are general nonlinear finite element analysis program, and compare the results with that from the real reinforced Concrete Deep beams with web opening tests. From the comparison, and parametric study, The Study presents the elementary data of the earthquake resistance for the reinforced concrete Deep beams with web opening.

  • In this paper, a strut-and-tie model approach has been proposed to directly calculate the amount of reinforcements in deep beams, and the force transfer mechanisms for this approach were investigated using linear finite element analysis. The proposed strut-and-tie model provides quite similar force transfer mechanisms to the results of linear finite element analysis for the 28 deep beams. The load-carrying capacities calculated from the proposed method are both accurate and conservative with little scatter or trends for the 214 deep beams. The deep beams have different concrete strengths including high-strength, various combinations of web reinforcements, and wide range of and a/d ratios. Good accuracy was also obtained using VecTor2, nonlinear finite element analysis tool based on the Modified Compression Field Theory. Since the proposed method provides a safe and reliable means for design of deep beams, this can serve to improve design provisions in future adjustments and development of design guidelines.

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) deep beams are critical structural elements used in offshore pile caps, rectangular cross-section water tanks, silo structures, transfer beams in high-rise buildings, and bent caps. As a result of the low shear span ratio to effective depth (a/d) in deep beams, arch action occurs, which leads to shear failure. Several studies have been carried out to improve the shear resistance of RC deep beams and avoid brittle fracture behavior in recent years. This study was performed to investigate the behavior of RC deep beams numerically and experimentally with different reinforcement arrangements. Deep beams with four different reinforcement arrangements were produced and tested under monotonic static loading in the study's scope. The horizontal and vertical shear reinforcement members were changed in the test specimens to obtain the effects of different reinforcement arrangements. However, the rebars used for tension and the vertical shear reinforcement ratio were constant. In addition, the behavior of each deep beam was obtained numerically with commercial finite element analysis (FEA) software ABAQUS, and the findings were compared with the experimental results. The results showed that the reinforcements placed diagonally significantly increased the load-carrying and energy absorption capacities of RC deep beams. Moreover, an apparent plastic plateau was seen in the load-displacement curves of these test specimens in question (DE-2 and DE-3). This finding also indicated that diagonally located reinforcements improve displacement ductility. Also, the numerical results showed that the FEM method could be used to accurately predict RC deep beams'behavior with different reinforcement arrangements.

  • A simplified method, developed from the softened strut-and-tie model, for determining the mid-span deflection of deep beams at ultimate state is proposed. The mid-span deflection and shear strength predictions of the proposed model are compared with the experimental data collected from 70 simply supported reinforced concrete deep beams, loaded with concentrated loads located at a distance a from an end reaction. The comparison shows that the proposed model can accurately predict the mid-span deflection and shear strength of deep beams with different shear span-to-depth ratios, different concrete strengths, and different horizontal and vertical hoops.

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the behavior and strength of prestressed concrete deep beams using nonlinear analysis. By using a sophisticated nonlinear finite element analysis program, the accuracy and objectivity of the assessment process can be enhanced. A computer program, the RCAHEST (Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), was used for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures. Tensile, compressive and shear models of cracked concrete and models of reinforcing and prestressing steel were used to account for the material nonlinearity of prestressed concrete. The smeared crack approach was incorporated. A bonded or unbonded prestressing bar element is used based on the finite element method, which can represent the interaction between the prestressing bars and concrete of a prestressed concrete member. The proposed numerical method for the evaluation of behavior and strength of prestressed concrete deep beams is verified by comparing its results with reliable experimental results.

  • Reinforced concrete deep beams with conpressive strengths in the range of 500kg/$\textrm{cm}^3$~750kg/$\textrm{cm}^3$ were tested under two-point loding. All the beams were singly reinforced with main steel percent $\rho$=1.29% and with nominal percentage of vertical shear reinflrcements $\rho_v$=0.26%. According to shear-span to depth ratio a/d. The beams were tested for four horizontal shear reinforcement ratio $\rho_h$, ranging from$\rho_h$=0.0 to $\rho_h$=0.53. The results indicate that the horizontal shear reinforcements of beams have an effect on failure load and on ductile behavior of deep beams. The test results are compared with predictions based on the current ACI Building Code. The computated reports in the paper will have designers assured for design of high strength concrete deep beam. Though ACI Code is relatively conservative and tend to non-economical, ACI Code has the merit that is easy to use.

  • The purpose of this experimental study is to investigate the shear behavior of high-strength concrete deep beam and to grasp the conservatism of ACI Building Code. Experimental results on 12 deep beams under two equal symmetrically placed point loads are reported. Main variables are vertical and horizontal web reinforcement and shear span-to-overall depth ratio. Test results indicated that web reinforcement dose not affect on formation of inclined cracks but shear span-to-overall depth ratio affect on inclined shear cracks and ultimate shear strength. Addition of vertical web reinforcement improves ultimate shear strength of H.S.C. deep beams that shear span-to-overall depth ratio is 1.0. Considerable increase in ultimate shear strength of H.S.C. deep beams with increasing horizontal web reinforcement that shear span-to-overall depth ratio is 0.5. Especially with increasing concrete strength($f_{ck}$) the ACI code is conservative in estamating the ultimate shear strength of deep beams.

  • Currently, the design of reinforced concrete deep beams with web openings is carried out using empirical or semi-empirical methods and hence their scope of application is limited. In particular, high strength concrete deep beams with various web opening configurations have been given little treatment. In view of this, a nonlinear layered finite element method (LFEM) for cracking and failure analysis of reinforced concrete structures is used to conduct a parametric study to investigate reinforced concrete deep beams various web opening behaviours. This paper initially presents comparisons of LFEM output with published test results to numerical techniques. The paper then focuses on a parametric study on the shear strengths of deep beams with varying web opening configurations such as opening sizes and locations. The results confirm that the current design methods are inadequate in predicting the maximum shear strength when web openings are present. A series of parametric study offers insight into the maximum shear strength of the deep beams being critically influenced by the size and location of web openings.

  • Reinforced concrete deep beams are commonly used in many structural applications, including transfer girders, pile caps, foundation walls, and offshore structures. The existing design methods were developed and calibrated using normal strength concrete test results, and their applicability th HSC deep beams must be assessed. For the shear strength prediction of high-strength concrete(HSC) deep beams, this paper proposed Softened Strut-and-Tie Model(SSTM) considered HSC and bending moment effect. The shear strength predictions of the refined model, the formulas the ACI 318-02 Appendix A STM, and Eq. of ACI 318-99 11.8 are compared with the collected experimental data of 74 HSC deep beams with compressive strength in the range of 49-78MPa . It is shown the shear strength of deep beam calculated by those equations are conservative on comparing test results. The comparison shows that the performance of the proposed SSTM is better than the ACI Code approach for all the parameters under comparison. The parameters reviewed include concrete strength, the shear span-depth ratio, and the ratio of horizontal and vertical reinforcement. The proposed SSTM gave a mean predicted to experimental ratio of 0.99, 32 percent higher than ACI 318-02 Code, however with the low coefficient variation.
