  • This paper describes the application of genetic algorithm for the discrete optimum design of reinforced concrete continuous beams. The objective is to minimize the total cost of reinforced concrete beams including the costs of concrete, form work, main reinforcement and stirrup. The flexural and shear strength, deflection, crack, spacing of reinforcement, concrete cover, upper-lower bounds on main reinforcement, beam width-depth ratio and anchorage for main reinforcement are considered as the constraints. The width and effective depth of beam and steel area are taken as design variables, and those are selected among the discrete design space which is composed with dimensions and steel area being used from in practice. Optimum result obtained from GA is compared with other literature to verify the validity of GA. To show the applicability and efficiency of GA, it is applied to three and five span reinforced concrete beams satisfying with the Korean standard specifications.

  • Steel corrosion due to carbonation in RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures easily occurs in urban cities with high CO2 concentration. RC structures are always subjected to external loading with various boundary conditions. The induced stress level causes changes in diffusion of harmful ion like CO2. In this work, a quantification of carbonation progress with stress level is carried out and carbonation prediction is derived through the relations. Determining the design parameters like cover depth, CO2 diffusion coefficient, carbonatable materials, and exterior CO2 concentration as random variables, service lifes under carbonation with design parameter's variation are obtained through MCS(Monte Carlo Simulation). Additionally the service life with different stress level is derived and the results are compared with those from deterministic method. Cover depth and cement hydrates are evaluated to be very effective to resist carbonation, and the proposed method which can consider the effect of stress on service life can be applied to maintenance priority determination.

  • This study investigated the structural behavior and field applicability of sandwich type GFRP arches with polymer mortar in core. As a result, in case of crack loading and failure loading, total strains at crown were the highest; the fracture strain at crown was 0.01690, which is 4.2 times greater than the fracture strain (0.004) of cement concrete. The 3 % deflection load was 17.42 kN, the flexural strength was $163.98{\times}10^{-3}GPa$, and the flexural elastic modulus was 11.884 GPa. From load-deflection relationship up to 3.5 % deflection, 3D analysis results and experimental values were observed to be almost identical. It was considered reasonable to set a deflection rate limit to be 3 % for structural safety purpose. The standard external flexural strength of semicircular arch used in this study was approximately 2.64 times higher than that of hume pipe (2 type standard) and tripled composite pipe. The external pressure strength at fracture was approximately 1.57 times higher than that of hume pipe. It was confirmed that the implementing semicircular arch had mechanically more advantage than the circular pipe. Optimum member thickness was 8~53 mm according to arch radius of 450~1,800 mm and cover depth of 2~10 m. It was found that the larger strength could be obtained even if the thickness of member was smaller than that of concrete structure. In field application study, figures and equations were derived for obtaining applicable cover depth and optimum member thickness according to loading conditions. These would be useful data for design and manufacture of sandwich type semicircular arch.

  • This paper presents a refined design model for current railroad design code on concrete structures exposed to marine environment. A time-varying diffusion coefficient(D) as well as surface chloride$(C_S)$ and chloride threshold level$(C_{lim})$ are studied. Averaging value of the D with time over exposed duration were used to refined durability design model to consider time dependent characteristic of D. The values for $C_S$ and $C_{lim}$ for the seashore in Korea revised for realistic durability design. The proposed model was verified by the so-called performance-based durability design, which is widely used in recent durability design code. Results show that the current standard specification underestimates durability performances of concrete structures exposed to marine environment, so that the cover depth design using current durability evaluation in the standard specifications is very much conservative. Thus, it is found that proposed durability design models for the railroad design code for railway concrete structures can be used effectively for service life design of concrete structures in marine environment.

  • A new method to prevent reinforced concrete columns from brittle failure. The method is called transversely reinforcing method in which only the critical regions are confined in steel tube. The steel tubes can change the failure mode of the latter columns from the shear to the flexure. The steel tubes also increase the compressive strength, shear strength and deformation capacity of the infilled concrete. The following conclusions are reached on bases of the study on the seismic performance of the high-strength RC rectangualr short columns confined in steel tube with shear span tho depth ratio of 2.0 The brittle shear failure of high-strength reinforced concrete short columns with large amount of longitudinal bars, which cannot prevented by using the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the maximum amount of welded hoops, can be prevented by using the steel tube which confines all the concrete inclusive of cover concrete. High-strength RC short columns confined in rectangular steel tube provided excellent enhancement of seismic performance but, found that plastic buckling of the steel tube in the hinge regions tended to occur when the columns were subjected to large cyclic lateral displacements. In order to prevent the plastic buckling when the columns lies on large on cyclic lateral displacements, the steel ribs were used for columns. Tests have established that the columns provide excellent enhancement of seismic performance of inadequately confined columns.

  • With all ensuring the fire resistance structure as a method of setting the required cover thickness to fire, the RC is significantly affected from the standpoint of its structural stability that the compressive strength and elastic modulus is reduced by fire. Normally, the degradation of concrete member exposed to fire is largely dependent on the fire scale and fire condition. There is therefore a need to precisely predict the deterioration and fire damage of the exposed member. Thus, this work estimated the temperature distribution inside a member taking into consideration of the thermal properties by means of finite element method(FEM). The estimation results in a little higher prediction value than the experimental value in surface layer and is almost coincident with the experiment as the heating depth increase. From this work it can be known that the simulation application of FEM using the thermal properties of concrete member in high temperature gives rise to the confident prediction in the prediction of temperature distribution.

  • Service life evaluation for RC Structures exposed to chloride attack is very important, however the previous two methods(deterministic and probabilistic method) show a big difference. The paper presents a service life simulation using deterministic and probabilistic method with time-dependent diffusion coefficient. Three different cases are considered for diffusion coefficient, concrete cover depth, and surface chloride content respectively, and then the PDF(probability of durability failure) and the related service life are obtained. Through adopting time-dependent diffusion, the discrepancy between the two methods can be reduced, which yields reasonable service life. When diffusion coefficient increases from $2.5{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$ to $7.5{\times}10^{-12}m^2/sec$, the service life decreases to 25.5~35.6% level, and cover depth does from 75 mm to 125 mm, it increases to 267~311% level as well. In the case of surface chloride content from $5.0kg/m^3$ to $15.0kg/m^3$, it changes to 40.9~54.5%. The effect of cover depth is higher than the others by 8~10 times and also implies it is a key parameter to service life extension.

  • GGBFS(Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag)-replacement is very effective for improving resistance to chloride attack and this can induce a long service life for RC(Reinforced Concrete) structures exposed to chlorides. In the work, the design parameters such as cover depth, surface chloride content, critical chloride content, and replacement ratio of GGBFS are considered, and optimum replacement ratio of GGBFS are derived with intended service life. The changes of surface chloride content and cover depth show 3.16~3.38 and 3.02~3.34 times of service life variation, which are most influencing parameters. Critical chloride content shows 1.53~1.57 times of service life variation regardless of w/b(Water to Binder) ratios. In the case of surface chloride content $18.0kg/m^3$, the most severe condition, cover depth over 70 mm and GGBFS replacement ratio over 42% are required with concrete containing w/b ratio under 0.42 for 100 years of intended service life. The condition of $13.0kg/m^3$, GGBFS replacement over 35% is required. For reasonable durability design, quantitative exterior condition and critical chloride content should be determined, and the criteria in Domestic Specification is evaluated to be conservative.

  • This paper has attempted to investigate the change in soil moisture volume and temperature of architecture by planting ground(soil thickness and soil mixture ratio) and ground cover plants(Sedum sarmentosum, Zoysia japonica, Chrysanthemum zawadskii) for middle region green roof system. For this, a test was conducted on the roof of Konkuk University building from April 2009 to October 2009. In terms of treatment, five types(SL, $P_7P_1L_2$, $P_6P_2L_2$, $P_5P_3L_2$, $P_4P_4L_2$) depending on soil mixture ratio and two types(15cm, 25cm) by soil depth were created. Results of soil moisture volume by soil mixture ratio in the 15cm soil thickness showed that the difference was significance between simple soil and mixture soil treatment, however, the statistical significance was not recognized according to soil mixture ratio. In case of 25cm soil thickness, soil moisture volume by soil mixture ratio was more higher 7Vol.%~10Vol.% in the mixture soil than simple soil treatment. In terms of districts planted ground cover plants, soil volume moisture differed among plants in the order Zoysia japonica 17.74 Vol.%$34.86^{\circ}C$, district non-planted $27.49^{\circ}C$, Sedum sarmentosum $25.11^{\circ}C$, Chrysanthemum zawadskii $23.08^{\circ}C$, Zoysia japonica $24.45^{\circ}C$ respectively So, concrete surface showed more higher $5^{\circ}C{\sim}15^{\circ}C$ than other things among the all the time. Result of inner temperature of the architecture and soil, it was measured inner of architecture $25.69^{\circ}C$, inner district non-planted $24.29^{\circ}C$, Chrysanthemum zawadskii $23.90^{\circ}C$, Zoysia japonica $24.02^{\circ}C$, Sedum sarmentosum $25.13^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • Reinforced steel corrosion due to concrete carbonation is one of main factors on the durability of RC structure. The carbonation velocity have an effect on carbon dioxide density, concrete quality and structural shape. Specially, these problems have increased in urban area. This study investigates the carbonation status of the bridges and quantifies the effect of carbonation based on various domestic field data. The failure probability of durability is evaluated on the basis of reliability concept. According to experimental results of the carbonation depth, the carbonation depth increased with structural age and carbonation velocity decreased with high strength of concrete. In most cases, the failure probability of durability by carbonation was more than 10%. Also, The results requires the minimum cover thickness of 70-80mm for target safety index(${\beta}$=1.3) proposed by Korean concrete specification.
