Research on the Solar Concentrating Optical System for Solar Energy Utilization

  • To improve the utilization efficiency of solar energy, a new solar optical concentrating system composed of a parabolic reflector with a square cross-section, a hyperbolic reflector with a square cross-section and two converging convex lenses has been designed. The proposed method can simultaneously focus and shape sun light into a square pattern on the solar panel. In addition, the total reflection property of photonic crystal within the range of the visible sunlight spectrum has been analyzed. Finally, the relationship between solar concentrating multiples and the diameter of the primary mirror has been discussed.

  • The concentrating solar module with high concentration ratio(320)has been studied.in this paper. The solar module was composed of the EMVJ solar cell, (Fresnel Lens-DCPC)concentrator and heat sink, and was measured by using the PASTF system. The experimental result and the result analysis for the individual item of the module were as f ollows; (1) The conversion efficiency of the module was 8.3%. (2) The optical efficiency of the concentrator was 46.5% (DCPC; 84.8%, Fresnel Lens; 54.8%). (3) The thermal loss of the solar cell was 4.9%. And methods for the further improvement of the concentrating solar module efficiency have been suggested.

  • To evaluate performance of concentrating solar cookers, we have designed and constructed parabolic solar cooker. Tests are carried out to define the performance characteristic of concentrating cookers under the ambient conditions. Performance and test of solar cooker were followed the international standard procedure that was proposed at the Third World Conference on solar cooking Stagnation temperature and water heating test are carried out to determine the maximum temperature attained by cooker and evaluate the thermal performance of the cooker, respectively.

  • To evaluate the performance of concentrating solar cookers, a parabolic solar cooker have been designed and constructed. Tests were carried out to define the performance characteristics of concentrating cookers under ambient conditions. The performance and test of the solar cooker were measured and conducted using the international standard procedure that was proposed at the Third World Conference on solar cooking. Stagnation temperature and water heating tests were carried out to determine the maximum temperature attained by the cooker and to evaluate the thermal performance of the cooker. The analysis showed that the solar cooker has maximum cooking power and efficiency 474W, 420W and 41%, 40%, respectively.

  • Knowledge of the solar radiation components are essential for modeling many solar photovoltaic systems. This is particularly the case for applications that concentrate the incident energy to attain high photo-dynamic efficiency achievable only at the higher intensities. In order to estimate the performance of concentrating PV systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this component can be concentrated. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting solar radiation component data since August, 1996. KIER's component data will be extensively used by concentrating PV system users or designers as well as by research institutes.

  • A concentrating solar collector of parabolic-cylindrical type is designed and constructed to provide a heat source of higher temperature for drying processes. Usually collectors of concentrating type require such peripheral auxiliary units as solar tracking system, heat medium circulation pump and temperature controller. However in this study, for simplification's sake in the maintenance of a collector system, it is intended to design a concentrating collector system which does not furnish these auxiliary units by adapting natural circulation system instead of foced circulation and by adjusting collector system to solar altitude manually and periodically. And based on the experimental data, a conceptual design for a heat sources of 50KWt thermal output is presented and discussed.

  • The proceeding of the $14^{th}$ biennial concentrating solar power SolarPACES symposium was closely reviewed and summarized to have an overview on up-to-date concentrated solar thermal technologies. A number of studies covering parabolic trough concentrating system, central receiver technology, solar fuels, dish and others were presented in the symposium which was held in Las Vegas, USA, from 4 to 7, 2008. Based on this overview a brief summary of technology trend and prospects were added in the paper.

  • This study aims to investigate a new structure for a concentrating photovoltaic (PV) module using a III-V compound semiconductor solar cellto solve the problems of existing concentrating PV modules and to explore a concentrating optical system with a flat structure, which shows remarkable advantages in terms of manufacturing cost, installation, and maintenance. This study should greatly contribute toward the development of concentrating PV modules. This study was performed to achieve an improvement in efficiency and economy and to implement an actual product. A new source of renewable energy is the only way in which countries that cannot produce oil can even emerge as an energy power. Therefore, this work can serve as a fundamental study that will help South Korea grow into a country that is a PV power generation force.

This is particularly the case for applications that concentrate the incident energy to attain high photo-dynamic efficiency achievable only at the higher intensities. In order to estimate the performance of concentrating solar systems, it is necessary to know the intensity of the beam radiation, as only this components can be concentrated, and The new solar system can generate electricity from ultraviolet and infrared light as well as visible light. The Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER) has began collecting solar radiation components data since January, 1988, and solar radiation classified wavelength data since November, 2008. KIER's solar radiation components and classified wavelength data will be extensively used by concentrating solar system users or designers as well as by research institutes.

  • For photovoltaic power generation need certainly decreasing module's price and increasing promote efficiency technology. Almost of solar panel is on the decrease energy efficiency since 2,000. like silicone(Si) solar panel, thin film solar panel and etc. Silicone(Si) solar panel was best efficiency in 1999. It's 24%. But after that time, It didn't pass limit of energy efficiency. That's why, nowadays being issued that using III-V compound semiconductor to high efficiency of concentrating photovoltaic system for making an alternative proposal. In Korea, making researches in allied technology with III-V compound semiconductor solar panel, condenser technology, and solar tracker. but feasibility study for concentrating photovoltaic power generation hasn't progressed yet. This thesis made a plan about CPV(Concentrating Photovoltaic)system and CPV has a higher energy efficiency than PV(Photovoltaic)system in fine climate conditions from comparing CPV with using silicone(Si) solar panel to PV's efficiency test result.
