  • The present study numerically analyzed the dynamic behavior of 3D framed structures subject to impulsive slamming forces by violent breaking waves. The structures were modeled using multiple lumped masses for the vertical projections of each member, and the slamming forces from the breaking waves were concentrated on these lumped masses. A numerical algorithm was developed to properly incorporate the slamming forces into a dynamic analysis to numerically determine the structural responses. Then, the validity of the numerical analysis was verified using the results of an existing hydraulic experiment. The numerical and experimental results for various model structures were generally in good agreement. The uncertainties concerning the properties of the breaking waves used in the verification are also discussed here.

  • The parameteric instability of the cantilever beam carrying two concentrated masses subjected to a periodic follower force is investigated theoretically and experimentally. The effects of the constant follower force and the periodic follower force the mass ratio and the location of the concentrated mass on the parametric instability of the system are discussed. In experiment, the nonconservative follower force is produced by the magnetic force of the electromagnet. The theoretical and the experimental results on the parameteric instability are in good agreement each other.

  • Recently, as size of building structure becomes larger, mat area of building structure is supported on Inhomogeneous foundation. The equipment machineries in building are mostly on basement story. The slab of the lowest basement story with equipment machineries is considered as plate supported on foundation with concentrated masses. In this paper, vibration analysis of rectangular thin plate is done by use of rectangular finite element with 4 nodes. The solution of this paper are compared with existing solution and natural frequencies of thin plates, with concented mass, on inhomogeneous Pasternak foundation are calculated

  • This study made an analysis of the characteristics of vibration & tone color of the piano strings on which a concentrated mass was set to give variety of different variations to the gamut. Theoretical analyses in this study were based on discrete and continuous system, of which the former was transformed into a multi-degree of freedom system by dividing into a number of small parts, while the latter utilized mode summation and Laplace transformation methods. And experiments were carried out with setting concentrated masses on upright piano string.

  • In this paper, the purpose is a study on structural analysis for offshore wind turbine using commercial code. Because offshore wind turbine is subjected to great wind and wave force, it is necessary to analyse the dynamics and minimize the response of wind turbine. The offshore wind turbine tower is modelled as a single degree of freedom and multi degree of freedom structure. It is assumed that the blades, nacelle are composed of concentrated masses.

  • Green tides that developed along the coast of China in 2015 were detected and tracked using vegetation indices from GOCI and Landsat images. Green tides first appeared near the Jiangsu Province on May 14 before increasing in size and number and moving northward to the Shandong Peninsula in mid-June. Typhoon Cham-hom passed through the Yellow Sea on July 12, significantly decreasing the algal population. An algae patch moved east toward Korea and on June 18 and July 4, several masses were found between the southwestern shores of Korea and Jeju Island. The floating masses found in Korean waters were concentrated at the boundary of the open sea and the Jindo cold pool, a phenomenon also observed at the boundary of coastal and offshore waters in China. Sea surface temperatures, derived from NOAA SST data, were found to play a role in generation of the green tides.

  • This paper deals with the analysis of the natural frequencies, mode shapes of an axially loaded beam system carrying ends consisting of non-concentrated tip masses and three spring-two mass sub-systems. The influence of system design and sub-system parameters on the combined system characteristics is the major part of this investigation. The effect of material properties, rotary inertia and shear deformation of the beam system is included. The end masses are elastically supported against rotation and translation at an offset point from the point of attachment. Sub-systems are attached to center of gravity eccentric points out of the beam span. The boundary conditions of the ordinary differential equation governing the lateral deflections and slope due to bending of the beam system including developed shear force frequency dependent terms, due to the sub.system suspension, have been formulated. Exact formulae for the modal frequencies and the modal shapes have been derived. Based on these formulae, detailed parametric studies are carried out. The geometrical and mechanical parameters of the system under study have been presented in non-dimensional analysis. The applied mathematical model is presented to cover wide range of mechanical, naval and structural engineering applications.

  • Concentrated stresses due to the tunnel excavation easily cause failure around opening in the soft rock mass layer. Thus, while excavatng tunnel in the soft rock mass layerm it is very important to predict the possibility of failure or yielding zones around tunnel boundary. There are two typical methods to predict these; 1) the analysis of field monioring data and 2) numerical analysis. In this study, it was attempted to describe the time-dependent or progressive rock mass manner due to the continuous failure and fracturing caused by surrounding underground openings using the second method. In order to apply the effects of progressive failure underground, an iterative technique was used with the Hoek and Brown rock mass failure theory. By developing and simulating, three different shapes of twin tunnels, this research simulated and estimated the proper size of critical pillar width between tunnels, distributed stresses on the tunnel sides, and convergences of tunnel crowns. Moreover, results out progressive failure technique based on the Hoek and Brown theory were compared with the results out of Mohr-Coulomb theory.

  • A glucan and a fructan producing enzymes from Leuconostoc mesenteroides NRRL B-1149 were prepared and concentrated from the cu1ture of 1.5% sucrose using polysulfone ultrafiltration hollow fiber in the presence of 0.1% (w/v) Tween 80, 1 mM $CaCl_2$, and 0.02% $NaN_3$. The molecular masses of the enzymes were estimated to be about 213.6 kDa and 180 kDa, respectively, based on the PAS staining for the glucosyltransferase and Mukasa method for fructosyltransferase. Polymers produced by the enzymes showed different solubility; an insoluble glucan and a soluble fructan. The linkages of polymers were determined by methylation using Hakomori reagent and following acid hydrolysis. The glucan was composed of ${\alpha}$-1,6 and 1,3 linkages and the fructan showed similar linkage data of levan.
