A Study on the Printing Pattern Design using Computer Graphics (컴퓨터 그래픽스를 이용한 날염 패턴 디자인에 관한 연구)

  • The writer did a survey of current textile patterns for the purpose of identifying a motif trend. After identifying a current motif trend the writer used an IBM PC 386 Computer and Lumena Software to design actual patterns. The results are as follows: 1. The most common currently used prints are floral patterns. 2. Knowing that floral patterns are most popular, the writer established a motif using the Rose of Sharon, the national flower of Korea. 3. Using computer graphics to move, enlarge and scale-down motif, the writer has been able to design various textile patterns. 4. Creating patterns with computer graphics was not only more efficient, but it also produced more accurate designs and a greater variety of designs. 5. Using the many computer graphic functions avaliable, a greater variety of patterns changes and compositions can be displayed than would be possible if produce by hand. 6. Computer simulations of textiles and clothing made it possible to evaluate the printed fabric or finished product. Faults in the printed fabric or clothing could be corrented before production. Through simulation then it is possible to create higher quality garments and readuce costly mistakes. Thereby greater profits will be realized from the finished garments.

  • The study is to assist system developers or designers who are participated in the design of the user-computer interface on online services such as Online Public Access Catalogue and Online Search-ins. To design the optimal user interface, system developers and designers should try to complete the following process orderly: 1) they should know and understand the active and potential user's information seeking behaviors concerning online services in details as possible. 2) they should design the conceptional user model on basis of that knowledge. 3)They should design the logical and hierachical computer model adaptable to the current environment. 4) they should design the display of the computer terminal which is ease to learn and use by the users. 5) finally, they should design the optimal and practical user inter-face on basis of the above 2, 3, and 4.

  • An optimal design method using a response surface method for dynamic characteristics of a washer is presented. The proposed method uses the design of experiment and a computer model is used for the experiment. The value of the cost function is estimated using a computer model for each case of the design variable variation. An orthogonal array is used to obtain best cases to be considered with minimum number of experimentation. Using these experimental values, optimal design is performed using a response surface method. The method used in this paper can be applied to any complicated mechanical systems that can be modelled and analyzed by a computer program. The method is applied to the design of dynamic characteristics of a washer.

  • The Purpose of concrete mix design is to determine the most economical and practical combination of materials in order to produce a concrete that will satisfy the performance requirements at any particular conditions of use. Mix design is regarded as a very complicated work, because for fulfilling this purpose deep understanding about the mix design is required. Mix design procedure of concrete is discussed in this study and a computer program for mix design using visual basic as 1anguage was developed. Even though beginners about concrete engineering. they can determine concrete mix proportions easily with the program.

Toward Optimal FPGA Implementation of Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Handwritten Hangul Character Recognition

  • Deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is an advanced technology in image recognition. Because of extreme computing resource requirements, DCNN implementation with software alone cannot achieve real-time requirement. Therefore, the need to implement DCNN accelerator hardware is increasing. In this paper, we present a field programmable gate array (FPGA)-based hardware accelerator design of DCNN targeting handwritten Hangul character recognition application. Also, we present design optimization techniques in SDAccel environments for searching the optimal FPGA design space. The techniques we used include memory access optimization and computing unit parallelism, and data conversion. We achieved about 11.19 ms recognition time per character with Xilinx FPGA accelerator. Our design optimization was performed with Xilinx HLS and SDAccel environment targeting Kintex XCKU115 FPGA from Xilinx. Our design outperforms CPU in terms of energy efficiency (the number of samples per unit energy) by 5.88 times, and GPGPU in terms of energy efficiency by 5 times. We expect the research results will be an alternative to GPGPU solution for real-time applications, especially in data centers or server farms where energy consumption is a critical problem.

  • Recently, the Ministry of education science and technology announced a revised information and communication technology curriculum, emphasizing aspects of computer science education rather than application of computer softwares. This change would benefit students to stimulate their thinking ability and facilitate creativity learning through in-depth understanding of principles of computer science, compared to the previous curriculum of computer education mainly focused on the skills of utilizing application softwares. Thus, the paper presents the design of a computer education curriculum based on the principles of computer science education, which would lead to trigger constructive ideas for improvements on the subject so that students may experience better education in the area.

Design Considerations of Resonant Network and Transformer Magnetics for High Frequency LLC Resonant Converter

  • This paper proposes the design considerations of resonant network and transformer magnetics for 500 kHz high switching frequency LLC resonant converter. The high power density can be effectively achieved by adopting high switching frequency which allows small size passive components in the converter. The design methodology of magnetizing inductance is derived for zero voltage switching (ZVS) condition, and the design methodology of the transformer and output capacitance is derived to achieve high power density at high operating frequency. Moreover, the structure of transformer is analyzed to obtain the proper inductance value for high switching operation. To verify the proposed design methodology, simulation and experimental results will be presented including temperature of passive and active components, and power conversion efficiency to evaluate dominant power loss. In addition, the validity of magnetics design will be evaluated with operating waveforms of the prototype converter.

  • Purpose of this study is to develop fashion design with greater added value and to seek the expandability of its expression domain by applying special computer code and tape embroidery machine capable of creating more special and fancier fashion to the development of fashion design by focusing on the fashion decorations that are becoming increasingly more computer systematized. For this purpose, expression techniques and effects of computer embroidery machine code and tape trimming decoration techniques, and cases of modern fashion design are examined. Major images are then deduced to designing and production of actual 6 creative pieces equipped with creativity and commercial value by applying such images deduced. As the results, it is not only possible to develop highly value added fashion design by utilizing mixed computer embroidery machine code and tape trimming decoration technique but also to produce countlessly new and unique surfaces by inducing changes in diversified pattern expressions, thickness of cord thread, and width, color and texture of material, etc. of the tape. This can maximize the expression domain of design, and fulfill the fashion desires of consumers wanting modern enhancement of quality and individualization. If multilateral attempts and studies for the aforementioned purposes can be expanded continuously, it is deemed possible to broaden the range of expression techniques in fashion design and, moreover, to make contribution towards enhancement of competitiveness of fashion industry.

  • In the early stage of ship design process large number of alternative compartment layout designs are generated and examined iteratively. Therefore, the design efficiency will be considerably enhanced if a tool is available to perform this kind of iterative design process effectively in a relatively short time. This paper describes a method for generating and evaluating various alternative compartment layout designs in a personal computer. In this method, computer model of a compartment layout is generated by establishing the hierarchical structure of the entities forming a compartment and defining clearly the relationships among the entities. The evaluation of the design alternatives are effectively performed utilizing the computer model generated. The data structure for storing the defined compartment layout is explained and an illustrative example is given showing the application of the method to the design and evaluation of compartment layout of an Oceanographic Research Vessel.
