  • Engineers should be careful in the design of bonding piles into pile caps because they are weak points in the pile foundation. Therefore in this study, the mechanism of bonding piles into pile caps was explained, and the design method of the composite bonding method was proposed. And the proposed design method was verified in comparison with the result of the full scale test. Also, the characteristic for the bearing capacity and the mechanism of compressive load of bonding method were analyzed.

  • In this study, based on the relationship of the vertical force - settlement of batter piles obtained by pressure chamber model tests, the vertical bearing capacity of vertical and batter piles according to the increase of pile inclination was analyzed. A model open - ended steel pipe pile with the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$ and 15$^\circ$ was driven into saturated fine sand with relative density of 50 %, and the static compression load tests were performed under each confining pressure of 35, 70 and 120 kPa in pressure chamber. The vertical bearing capacity of pile obtained from pressure chamber tests increased with the pile inclination. In the case of the inclination of 5$^\circ$, 10$^\circ$, 15$^\circ$, increasing ratios of pile bearing capacity were 111, 121, 127 ~ 140 % of vertical bearing capacity respectively. In the case of the inclination of above 20$^\circ$, the model tests could not be performed because of pile of pile head during compressive loading on the pile head.

  • To study the mechanical properties of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) filled circular steel tube columns under eccentric compression loads, this study presents a finite element model which can simulate the eccentrically compressed columns using ABAQUS software. The analytical model was established by selecting the reasonable nonlinear analysis theory and the constitutive relationship of materials in the columns. The influences of design parameters on the eccentric compressive performance of columns were also considered in detail, such as the diameter-thickness ratio of circular steel tube, replacement percentage of recycled coarse aggregate (RCA), slenderness ratio, eccentricity, recycled aggregate concrete (RAC) strength and steel strength and so on. The deformation diagram, stress nephogram and load-displacement curves of the eccentrically compressed columns were obtained and compared with the test results of specimens. The results show that although there is a certain error between the calculation results and the test results, the error is small, which shows the rationality on the numerical model of eccentrically compressed columns. The failure of the columns is mainly due to the symmetrical bending of the columns towards the middle compression zone, which is a typical compression bending failure. The eccentric bearing capacity and deformation capacity of columns increase with the increase of the strength of steel tube and profile steel respectively. Compared with profile steel, the strength of steel tube has a greater influence on the eccentric compressive performance of columns. Improving the strength of RAC is beneficial to the eccentric bearing capacity of columns. In addition, the eccentric bearing capacity and deformation capacity of columns decrease with the increase of replacement percentage of RCA. The section form of profile steel has little influence on the eccentric compression performance of columns. On this basis, the calculation formulas on the nominal eccentric bearing capacity of columns were also put forward and the results calculated by the proposed formulas are in good agreement with the test values.

  • To analyze the effects of compressive strength of concrete and longitudinal steel ratio on buckling behavior of columns, 36tied reinforced concrete columns with hinged ends were tested. The 100mm square cross section was used and the amount of eccentricity was 10mm. The compressive strengths of column specimens with slenderness ratios of 15, 30 and 50 were 202, 513 and 752 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The longitudinal steel ratio of columns with bending about a section diagonal and about a principal axis were 2.85%(4-D10). The ratio of ultimate load capacity to that of short column with the same eccentricity was much decreased at high slenderness ratio with increasing the compressive strength of concrete. And the lateral displacement of column at the ultimate load was decreased as the strength was increased. These are due to that at high slenderness ratio, the load capacity and behavior of column are affected by flexural rigidity. And, it was also found that for the same quantity of confining steel and level of axis load, there is little difference between the flexural strength for bending about a section diagonal and for bending about principal axis.

  • Based on the Fire Service Act of mandatory provision, new buildings are strictly forced to use fire protection materials. Flame resistant EPS is one of those materials. Unlike conventional EPS that can be fused to make EPS ingot and be recycled for various purposes, flame resistant EPS waste cannot be recycled due to the presence of protective coating that is applied to increase the fire protection properties of EPS. A suitable alternative that can process large amount of flame resistant EPS wastes needs to be developed, and one of the possible alternative is to use them as construction materials. In this research, experiments were designed to observe whether the flame resistant EPS wastes can be utilized as partial replacements of fine aggregates in cement mortar. The replacement ratio of waste EPS was varied, and its effect on compressive strength and absorption capacity was investigated. According to the experimental results, both compressive strength and absorption capacity met the Korean Standard specification for cement bricks and blocks, indicating that flame resistant EPS wastes can be used for construction purposes.

  • In order to investigate the influence of slanting angle of reticulated root piles(RRP) on their bearing capacities, model tests of compressive and uplift loads on RRP with different slanting angles, which were installed in sandy soils with a relative density of 47%, were carried out. Each pile which is made of a steel bar of 5mm in diameter and 300mm in length, is coated with sand to be 6.5mm in diameter. One set of RRP consists of 8 piles which are installed in circular patterns forming two concentric circles, each of which has 4 piles. Slanting angles of RRP for load tests are 0$^{\circ}$, 5$^{\circ}$, 10$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 20$^{\circ}$, and 25$^{\circ}$. In addition, compressive load tests on circular footing whose diameter is the same as the outer circle of RRP were carried out. Test results show that maximum load bearing capacities of RRP by regression analysis are obtained at about 12$^{\circ}$ and 13$^{\circ}$ of slanting angles for compressive and uplift load tests, respectively. Maximum compressive bearing capacity is estimated to be 13oA bigger than that of the vertical RRP and 95% bigger than that of surface footing. Maximum uplift capacity is estimated to be 21% bigger than that of the vertical RRP. And it can be appreciated that increasing the slanting angle makes the load -Settlement behavior more ductile.

  • The research reported here is concerned with the effects of the fiber combination condition and water/cement ratio on the mechanical properties of high performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites(HPFRCC). An experimental investigation of the behavior of steel cords(SC) and SC and Polyethylene(PE) hybrid fiber reinforced cementitious material under compressive and tensile loading is presented. In this experimental research, the tensile and compressive strength and strain capacity of HPFRCC were selected using the cylindrical specimens. The results show that W/C ratio is a significant effect factor on the compressive and tensile performance of HPFRCC. The envelope curve concept applies to hybrid fiber-reinforced cementitious composites in tension just as it does to compressive stress-strain curve of fiber-reinforced cement composites. For practical purposes, the tensile envelope curve may be taken to be the same as the monotonic tensile stress-strain curve.

  • Experimental and numerical studies were done to investigate seismic performance of slender sheat wall with no boundary confinement. 1/3 scale-specimens that model the plastic region of long slender shear walls subjected to combined axial load and bending moment were rested to investigate strength, ductility, capacity of energy dissipation and strain distribution. The experimental results show that the slender walls fail due to early crushing in the compressive boundary, and then have very low ductility. The measured maximum compressive strain is 0.0021, which is much less then 0.004 being commonly used for estimation of ductility. The experimental results indicates that the maximum compressive strain is not a fixed value but is affected by moment gradient along the shear wall height and distance from neutral axis to the extreme compressive fiber.

  • The compressive strength of horizontal joints in precast concrete large panel structures depends on parameters such as grout and panel strength, detail of joint, joint moment, width of grout column etc. As the panels are only connected at the pocket, it results in the reduction of compressive strength area. The purposes of this study are to develop the suitable grout material the joint pocket and to enable us to evaluate structural capacity. The validity of the design formulas provides us more economic system in construction. Test results of 15 specimens show that the proper construction procedure and grouting material develop the sufficient compressive strength of the wall as monolithic system.
