  • In a wireless sensor network (WSN), the data transmission technique based on the cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (CMIMO) scheme reduces the energy consumption of sensor nodes quite effectively by utilizing the space-time block coding scheme. However, in networks with high node density, the scheme is ineffective due to the high degree of correlated data. Therefore, to enhance the energy efficiency in high node density WSNs, we implemented the distributed source coding (DSC) with the virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) data transmission technique in the WSNs. The DSC-MIMO first compresses redundant source data using the DSC and then sends it to a virtual MIMO link. The results reveal that, in the DSC-MIMO scheme, energy consumption is lower than that in the CMIMO technique; it is also lower in the DSC single-input single-output (SISO) scheme, compared to that in the SISO technique at various code rates, compression rates, and training overhead factors. The results also indicate that the energy consumption per bit is directly proportional to the velocity and training overhead factor in all the energy saving schemes.

  • In this paper, we examine the fundamental performance of image coding schemes based on multipulse model. First, we introduce several kinds of pulse search methods (i.e., correlation method, pulse overlap search method and pulse amplitude optimization method) for the model. These pulse search methods are derived from auto-correlation function of impulse responses and cross-correlation function between host signals and impulse responses. Next, we explain the basic procedure of multipulse image coding scheme, which uses the above pulse search methods in order to encode the high frequency component of an original image. Finally, by means of computer simulation for some test images, we examine the PSNR(Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) and computational complexity of these methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a structure far lossless audio coding method. Prediction model is used in the wavelet transform domain. After DWT, wavelet coefficients is quantized and decorrelated by prediction modeling. The DWT can be constructed to critical bands. We can get a lower data rate representation of audio signal which has a good quality like the result of perceptual coding. Then the prediction errors are efficiently coded by the Golomb-coding method. The prediction coefficients are fixed for reducing the computational burden when we find prediction coefficients.

  • JPEG2000 achieves a target bit rate by selecting the bitstream for adequate coding passes after encoding full passes in Tier-1 coder. Tier-1 encoding is complicated and time-consuming process. In this paper, we propose a new rate control technique that chooses the necessary passes without the full passes coding of Tier-1 by using previous image information for volumetric image. The simulation result shows that the proposed technique reduces encoding time of coding passes up to 81.5%.

  • As a diagnostic image of hospitl, the utilization of digital image is steadily increasing. Image coding is indispensable for storing and compressing an enormous amount of diagnostic images economically and effectively. In this paper adaptive two stage vector quantization based on Kohonen's neural network for the compression of cardioangiography among typical angiography of radiographic image sequences is presented and the performance of the coding scheme is compare and gone over. In an attempt to exploit the known characteristics of changes in cardioangiography, relatively large blocks of image are quantized in the first stage and in the next stage the bloks subdivided by the threshold of quantization error are vector quantized employing the neural network of frequency sensitive competitive learning. The scheme is employed because the change produced in cardioangiography is due to such two types of motion as a heart itself and body motion, and a contrast dye material injected. Computer simulation shows that the good reproduction of images can be obtained at a bit rate of 0.78 bits/pixel.

  • Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a promising active remote sensing technique to obtain large terrain information of the earth in all-weather conditions. SAR is useful in many applications, including terrain mapping and geographic information system (GIS), which use SAR display images. Usually, these applications need the enormous data storage because they deal with wide terrain images with high resolution. So, compression technique is a useful approach to deal with SAR display images with limited storage. Because there is some indispensable data loss through the conversion of a complex SAR image to a display image, some applications, which need high-resolution images, cannot tolerate more data loss during compression. Therefore, lossless compression is appropriate to these applications. In this paper, we propose a novel lossless compression technique for a SAR display image using one-step predictor and block arithmetic coding.

  • This paper introduces a new preprocessing scheme to replace original data of gray scale images with particular ordered data so that performance of lossless compression can be improved more efficiently. As a kind of preprocessing technique to maximize performance of entropy encoder, the proposed method converts the input image data into more compressible form. Before encoding a stream of the input image, the proposed preprocessor counts co-occurrence frequencies for neighboring pixel pairs. Then, it replaces each pair of adjacent gray values with particular ordered numbers based on the investigated co-occurrence frequencies. When compressing ordered image using entropy encoder, we can expect to raise compression rate more highly because of enhanced statistical feature of the input image. In this paper, we show that lossless compression rate increased by up to 37.85% when comparing results from compressing preprocessed and non-preprocessed image data using entropy encoder such as Huffman, Arithmetic encoder.

  • The wavelet transform providing both of the frequency and spatial information of an image is proved to be very much effective for the compression of images, and recently lot of studies on coding algorithms for images decomposed by the wavelet transform together with the multi-resolution theory are going on. This paper proposes a quadtree decomposition method of image compression applied to the images decomposed by wavelet transform by using the correlations between pixels and '0'data grouping. Since the coefficients obtained by the wavelet transform have high correlations between scales and high concentrations, the quadtree method can reduce the data quantity effectively. the experimental infrared image with 256${\times}$256 size and 8〔bit〕, was used to compare the performances of the existing and the proposed compression methods.

  • Video object segmentation is one of the core technologies for content-based real-time MPEG-4 encoding system. For real-time requirement, the segmentation algorithm should be fast and accurate but almost all existing algorithms are computationally intensive and not suitable for real-time applications. The MPEG-4 VM(Verification Model) has provided basic algorithms for MPEG-4 encoding but it has many limitations in practical software development, real-time camera input system and compression efficiency. In this paper, we implemented the preprocessing system for real-time camera input and VOP extraction for content-based video coding and also implemented motion detection to achieve the 180 : 1 compression rate for real-time and high compression MPEG-4 encoding.

  • Reducing compression artifacts such as ringing and blocking is one of important issues to improve a visual quality of a JPEG compressed image. In this paper, we propose a new post processing technique based on bilateral filtering (BF), which is one of the techniques that are used to reduce compression artifacts. An important issue with the application of the BF is the selection of the filter parameters, which affects the result significantly. In this work, we suggest a new method to select the filter parameter automatically. In addition to artifact reduction using the BF, a contrast enhancement is performed to overcome the contrast loss problem due to compression. The experimental result shows that the proposed approach can alleviate the artifacts efficiently.
