  • Wyner-Ziv video coding is a new video compression paradigm based on distributed source coding theory of Slepian-Wolf and Wyner-Ziv. Wyner-Ziv coding enables light-encoder/heavy-decoder structure by shifting complex modules including motion estimation/compensation task to the decoder. Instead of performing the complicated motion estimation process in the encoder, the Wyner-Ziv decoder performs the motion estimation for the generation of side information in order to make the predicted signal of the Wyner-Ziv frame. The efficiency of side information generation deeply affects the overall coding performance, since the bit-rates of the Wyner-Ziv coding is directly dependent on side information. In this paper, an improved side information generation method using field coding is proposed. In the proposed method, top fields are coded with the existing SI generation method and bottom fields are coded with new SI generation method using the information of the top fields. Simulation results show that the proposed method improves the quality of the side information and rate-distortion performance compared to the conventional method.

  • Thanks to Dynamic Capacitance Control (DCC) technique, response time of an LCD display has greatly improved. However, DCC requires hi-speed memory for the real-time writing/reading of an image of a previous frame, which results in increases in hardware overhead and cost. In this paper, we propose Modified Exponential Golomb (MEG) coding, a low-complex high-speed image compression method, which can remarkably reduce memory requirement for DCC. We also propose a pixel-wise DCC switching technique to prevent a compression error from affecting the quality of a final image on LCD. In our experiment, the degradation in visual quality was not noticeable when we cut the DCC memory size of 1080i HD data by 1/3.

  • In this paper, we propose a new embedded video compression scheme which uses three-dimensional rate-distortion optimization based block coder. After the proposed scheme removes temporal redundancy by applying the motion compensated temporal filtering(MCTF) on input video frames, two dimensional discrete wavelet transform is applied on video frames to remove spatial redundancy. The three-dimensional wavelet coefficients generated in this way are sorted according to their expected rate-distortion slope and encoded by using the three-dimensional block partition coding method. The proposed scheme also uses both the effective color video coding method which maintains embedded features, and the efficient bit-rate control method. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme not only produces embedded bit-streams, but also outperforms existing video compression schemes.

  • In this paper, we propose Quad BTC that compresses DSM files to allow random access for TRF (Terrain Referenced Flight). The terrain data used for TRF has a large data capacity to be stored in the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle), so its size must be reduced through compression. Conventional BTC (Block Truncation Coding) based compression methods are suitable for TRF because it can decode randomly accessing specific coordinates. However, These conventional methods have a problem that the error increases because the deviation of the data increases as the size of the block increases. In this paper, we propose Quad BTC method that adaptively divides a block in to 4 sub blocks and compresses to solve this problem. The proposed method may reduce errors because the size of the sub block can be adjusted within the block. Through simulation using actual terrain data, it is verified that Quad BTC has less error at the same compression ratio than conventional BTC and AM BTC.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient dynamic coding scheme by using multiple codewords in H.264/AVC entropy coding. The exponential Golomb (Exp-Golomb) codewords used in H.264/AVC do not reflect enough the symbol distributions of the combined syntax element in (7) due to their static probability distribution characteristics. However, the multiple codewords in this paper have different statistical characteristics. we propose a dynamic coding scheme by using selectively among multiple codewords to encode the combined syntax element according to given image sequences. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the existing (7) method in compression efficiency without loss of quality.

  • In this paper, an implementation method of the efficient image transmission stage using watermarking and channel ceding is proposed. Usually, image communication system consists of both a transmitter part and a receiver part. The transmitter part takes charge of copyright protection of the generated image data, and image coding and compression that can deal with channel noises when transmitting. In the transmitter part, we propose a channel coding method which protects both the watermark signal and the original signal for protecting the copyright of image data and solving channel noises when transmitting. Firstly, copyright protection of image data is conducted. For this, image structure analysis is performed, and both the improvement of image quality and the generation of the watermark signal are made. Then, the histogram is constructed and the watermark signals are selected from this. At this stage, by embedding of the coefficients of curve fittness into the lower 4 bits of the image data pixels, image quality degradation due to the embedding of watermark signals are prevented. Finally, turbo coding, which has the most efficient error correction capability in error correction codes, has been conducted to protect signals of watermark and preserved original image quality against noises on the transmission channel. Particularly, a new interleaving method named "semi random inter]easer" has been proposed.

  • Compressed video bitstreams are intended for real-time transmission over communication networks. Because video compression algorithms eliminate the temporal, spatial, and statistical redundancies, the coded video bitstreams are very sensitive to transmission errors. We propose an error resilient video coding technique to limit the effect of error propagation in low bit-rate video coding. The success of error resilient coding techniques relies on how accurately the transmission errors can be detected. To detect the transmission error, we propose a very simple error detection technique based on data hiding Next, we conceal the corrupted MB data using intra MB refresh and motion compensation with the estimated motion vector and compare the simulation results. This method will be useful in video communication in error Prone environment such as WCDMA networks.

  • MPEG-2 achieves high compression radio, by exploiting the temporal and spatial correlations in real image sequence, using the motion compensated prediction and the transform coding, respectively. However, as the image sequence is more highly compressed, the encoded bitstream becomes more vulnerable to transmission error over the noisy channels. Furthermore, er개rs in the headers are fatal to decoding processes, because the header parameters in the video coding standard include a lot of important information connected to the syntax elements, fables, and decoding process. In this paper, we propose a new error resilience method using LSB coding for header parameters in MPEG-2 coded video transmissions. The experimental results for football and susie video sequence demonstrate that the proposed error resilience method for header parameters in MPEG-2 bitstream has good performance.

  • Multi-view video consists of a set of multiple video sequences from multiple viewpoints or view directions in the same scene. It contains extremely a large amount of data and some extra information to be stored or transmitted to the user. This paper presents inter-view correlations among video objects and the background to reduce the prediction complexity while achieving a high coding efficiency in multi-view video coding. Our proposed algorism is based on object-based segmentation scheme that utilizes video object information obtained from the coded base view. This set of data help us to predict disparity vectors and motion vectors in enhancement views by employing object registration, which leads to high compression and low-complexity coding scheme for enhancement views. An experimental results show that the superiority can provide an improvement of PSNR gain 2.5.3 dB compared to the simulcast.

  • High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) Standard, as the latest coding standard, introduces satisfying compression structures with respect to its predecessor Advanced Video Coding (H.264/AVC). The new coding standard can offer improved encoding performance compared with H.264/AVC. However, it also leads to enormous computational complexity that makes it considerably difficult to be implemented in real time application. In this paper, based on machine learning, a fast partitioning method is proposed, which can search for the best splitting structures for Intra-Prediction. In view of the video texture characteristics, we choose the entropy of Gray-Scale Difference Statistics (GDS) and the minimum of Sum of Absolute Transformed Difference (SATD) as two important features, which can make a balance between the computation complexity and classification performance. According to the selected features, adaptive decision trees can be built for the Coding Units (CU) with different size by offline training. Furthermore, by this way, the partition of CUs can be resolved as a binary classification problem. Experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm can save over 34% encoding time on average, with a negligible Bjontegaard Delta (BD)-rate increase.
