  • MCMB (mesocarbon microbeads) has been synthesized from coal tar pitch, petroleum pitch and polymer compound generally. But yield of MCMB was low about 20~40 wt% and was not above 50 wt%. Neither MCMB was replaced with natural graphite because of economic performance, refining MCMB, and control of the particle size distribution. This study was performed to elevate yield of MCMB and to develop technique of particle size distribution. As the result, yield of MCMB that was synthesized from coal tar pitch increased more than 60 wt% about raw material and particle size of MCMB was restrained according to control of QI (quinoline insoluble) ingredient in raw pitch, heat treatment temperature and time.

  • In order to selectively remove oil and organic compound from water, silica nanoparticles with hydrophobic coating was used. Since silica nanoparticles are generally hydrophilic, removal efficiency of oil and organic compound, such as toluene, in water can be decreased due to competitive adsorption with water. In order to increase the removal efficiency of oil and toluene, hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated on silica nanoparticles in the form of thin film. Hydrophobic property of the PDMS-coated silica nanoparticles and hydrophilic silica nanoparticles were easily confirmed by putting it in the water, hydrophilic particle sinks but hydrophobic particle floats. PDMS coated silica nanoparticles were dispersed on a slide glass with epoxy glue on and the water contact angle on the surface was determined to be over $150^{\circ}$, which is called superhydrophobic. FT-IR spectroscopy was used to check the functional group on silica nanoparticle surface before and after PDMS coating. Then, PDMS coated silica nanoparticles were used to selectively remove oil and toluene from water, respectively. It was demonstrated that PDMS coated nanoaprticles selectively aggregates with oil and toluene in the water and floats in the form of gel and this gel remained floating over 7 days. Furthermore, column filled with hydrophobic PDMS coated silica nanoparticles and hydrophilic porous silica was prepared and tested for simultaneous removal of water-soluble and organic pollutant from water. PDMS coated silica nanoparticles have strong resistibility for water and has affinity for oil and organic compound removal. Therefore PDMS-coated silica nanoparticles can be applied in separating oil or organic solvents from water.

  • The effect of the particle size and silica structure on the wear behavior of Silica/Styrene-Butadiene Rubber (SBR) compounds was investigated using a blade-type abrader and the findings were compared with those obtained with an Akron abrader. The compensated characteristic parameter (Ψc), which was the contributory factor of the combined effect of the particle size and filler structure, was introduced. This parameter was found to exhibit a linear relationship with the Young's modulus. The Young's modulus correlated more with Ψc than the uncompensated characteristic parameter (Ψ) modeled for carbon black. The wear rate and volume loss measured using a blade-type abrader and Akron abrader were respectively observed to be inversely proportional to Ψc, that is, the wear resistance of Silica/SBR compound improved as the particle size became smaller and the silica structure became intricate. The coefficient of determination (R2) obtained from the linear relationship between Ψc and wear rate was higher than those between Ψc and volume loss for the Silica/SBR compound. Thus, the blade-type abrader exhibited high potential to be used for accurately evaluating the effect of particle size and structural properties of silica on the wear behavior of SBR compounds.

  • Spherical, monosized gadolinium compound was prepared by the reaction of Gd(NO3)3 solution with decomposition products of urea in the solution at evaluated temperature. Chemical composition and calcination characteristics of spherical gadolinium compound prepared were investigated by X-ray IR and TG-DTA. The approximate chemical composition of the spherical particle precipitated was Gd(OH)CO3.1.5H2O. Gd(OH)CO3.1.5H2O was calcined to monoclinic type Gd2O3 at 115$0^{\circ}C$ via cubic type Gd2O3 near $600^{\circ}C$. The effects of various parameters such as pH, temperature, concentration ratio of urea to gadolinium precusor, ageing time, and others material (CCl3COOH and HOCNH2) in stead of urea as precipitating agent on the properties of the resulting precipitates were studied systematically.

  • Fatigue strength of NiAl and Ni$_3$Al particulate reinforced aluminum alloy composites fabricated by the diecasting method was examined at room and elevated temperatures. The results were compared wit h that of SiC particulate reinforced one. The particulate reinforced composites showed some improvement in the static and fatigue strength at elevated temperatures when compared with that of Al alloy. The composites reinforced by intermetallic compound particles showed good fatigue strengths at elevated temperatures especially $Ni_3AI_{p}/Al$ alloy composite showed good fatigue limit up to high temperature of 30$0^{\circ}C$. Adopting intermetallic compound particle as a reinforcement phase, it will be possible to develop MMC representing better fatigue property at elevated temperature.

  • This paper describes a part of the results obtained in the process of the development of thin sound isolation sheets filled mineral compound powder with PVC. The raw materials used are pyrophillite, pottery stone and graphite. The physical properties such as the crystal structures, compositions, and specific gravities, etc. of raw materials are analyzed and discussed from a point of view of sound isolation material. From the analysis of experimental results, the particle size and the additive amount of mineral compound powder for manufacturing sample isolation sheets are decided. The resistant capability against fire of sound isolation sheets including mechanical, thermal and physical properties is tested. The transmission loss measuremenst of sound isolation sheets are performed using two-microphone method in an impedance tube. It is shown that the sound isolation capability of thin sheets has an excellent performance in excess of the object of development.

  • Au fine particle dispersed TiO2 film was prepared on silica glass substrate by sol-gel dip and firing process. The films were fabricated from the system of titanium tetraisoproxie-EtOh-HCl_H2O-hydrogen tetrachloroaurate(III) tetrahydrate. The conditions for the formation of the clear solution and dissolving high concentration of Au compound were examined. And a photoreduction process was adopted to control the size of gold metal particles. Phase evolution of matrix TiO2 and variation of Au particle with UV irradiation were investigated by XRDA, SEM, TEM and UV-visible spectrophotometer. And the effect of CPCl(Cetylpyridinium chloride monohydrate) as a dispersion agent was evaluated.

  • Tire and road wear particles (TRWPs) were collected from road dust and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was performed to measure the content of tire wear particles (TWPs) in the TRWPs. The TGA thermograms of TRWPs showed two weight loss steps associated with polymer decomposition including weight loss after 480℃ which may be due to road wear particles. Different samples gave different TGA thermograms because the types and contents of the road wear particles attached to the TWPs should be different from each other, and each TWP might have different composition. The TGA results of the model asphalt pavement wear particles, with (volatile organics + polymers + carbon black) : ash = 33.5 : 66.5, was applied to the TRWP results, and the TWP contents of TRWPs were found to be 50-65%. The zinc oxide content in the rubber compound was negligible.
