In order to develop new anti-photoaging agents, we examined the antioxidative activity and the inhibition effect of matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) on the extracts of a marine product, Zostera marina L., which is known for its potent activity. Three compounds (compounds 1, 2, and 3) were isolated from an ethyl acetate (EtOAc) soluble fraction of the product; they were identified as apigenin-7 -O-$\beta$-D-glucoside (1), chrysoeriol (2), and luteolin (3). These compounds were found to scavenge radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) and were measured to have $SC_{50}$/ values of 0.18 mM, 0.68 mM, and 0.01 mM against the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and 0.04 mM, 0.03 mM, and 0.01 mM against the superoxide radical in the xanthine/xanthine oxidase system, respectively. Compound 3 suppressed the expression of MMP-1 by up to 44% at 4.0 $\mu$M and inhibited the production of interleukin 6 (IL-6), which is known as a cytokine that induces MMP-1 expression. From these results, compound 3 and the other compounds were determined to have antioxidative activity and to inhibit MMP-1 expression. Thus, the three compounds are expected to be useful for preventing the photoaging of skin.
This study has been carried out to investigate the precipitation behavior of ${\chi}$ phase and effect of ${\chi}$ phase precipitation on the impact toughness of 25%Cr-7%Ni-4%Mo super duplex stainless steel. It was proved that the ${\chi}$ phase was a intermetallic compound, which represented the higher chromium and molybdenum concentration than the matrix phases, and also showed the higher molybdenum concentration than the ${\sigma}$ phase. The ${\chi}$ phase was precipitated at the interface between ferrite and austenite or inside the ferrite matrix in the early stage of aging. The number of ${\chi}$ phase precipitates increased with increasing aging time, however, after showing the maximum value, the number was decreased due to the gradual transformation of ${\chi}$ phase into ${\sigma}$-phase. Aging ferrite phase was decomposed by the $r^2$ phase and ${\sigma}$-phase. Impact toughness rapidly decreased with time in the initial stage of aging at ${\chi}$ phase start to precipitate. Thus, the impact toughness was greatly influence for the precipitation of ${\chi}$ phase.
$ZrV_{0.1}Mn_{0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy ingot (bulk alloy) made by the arc melting was found to be consisting of mostly of $ZrV_{0.2}Mn_{0.98}Ni_{1.04}$ matrix alloy and $ZrV_{0.01}Mn_{0.13}Ni_{1.2}$ 2nd phase alloy. The former alloy had the form of the C15 type Laves alloy structure and the latter one had the intermetallic compound structure of $Zr_9Ni_{11}$. In order to investigate the effect of these two phases on the electrochemical charge-discharge characteristics of bulk $ZrV_[0.1}Mn_0.7}Ni_{1.2}$ alloy, the matrix and the 2nd phase alloys were fabricated separately by arc melting method and their electrochemical characteristics were studied and compared with the bulk alloy. It was found that the discharge capacity was the lowest of 160 mAh/g in the 2nd phase alloy. The matrix alloy exhibited 200 mAh/g. Both were lower than that of the bulk alloy of 250 mAh/g. The matrix and the bulk alloys showed a similar properties in the activation stage, the high rate dischargeability and the self discharge characteristics. Also a signigicant capacity decrease was observed after activation in both alloys. Whereas the 2nd phase alloy showed the very different characteristics. This alloy was found to be difficult to activate. However the capacity was remained constant after the activation. Also the self discharge rate was seen to be better than those of the matrix and the bulk alloys.
Allomatrix (Wright Medical Tech, Inc., Arlington, Tenn, USA), is a newly designed, injectable putty with a reliable demineralized bone matrix (DBM), derived from human bone. The compound contains 86% DBM and other bone growth factors such as bone morphogenic protein (BMP)-2, BMP-4, insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-1, and transforming growth factor (TGF)-${\beta}1$. It has excellent osteoinduction abilities. In addition, DBM is known to have osteoconduction capacity as a scaffold due to its collagen matrix. This product contains a powder, which is a mix of DBM and surgical grade calcium sulfate as a carrier. A practitioner can blend the powder with calcium sulfate solution, making a putty-type material which has the advantages of ease of handling, better fixation, and no need for a membrane, because it can function as membrane itself. This study reports the clinical and radiographic results of various guided bone regeneration cases using Allomatrix, demonstrating its strong potential as a graft material.
The waste FRP occured in the fabrication of SMC (sheet molding compound) bathtubs and the waste polyurethane foam occured in electronic manufacture and waste insulator were applied as a soundproof and light weight pannel in the waste FRP unsaturated polyester matrix resin composites to recycle. The effect of filler contents on the mechanical properties and interfacial phenomena of the filler and matrix on the composites was evaluated. The tensile strength of composites reached its maximum value of 82.34 MPa when the filler content was 70 wt%, and the more content of reinforcement is increased, the more tensile modulus was decreased. The flexural strength and modulus of composites, reinforced 70 wt% with filler content, were dominant compared to the other samples to 72.5 MPa, 958.4 MPa respectively. When composite of reinforced 70 wt% with filler content, it was confirmed that pull out phenomena and cracks did not occur in the interface of reinforcement and matrix resin through the SEM observation. Also, waste FRP and urethane foam were dispersed well into matrix resin as filler.
We synthesized various polyurethanes(PU) haying different hard segments with different molecular weights of the soft segment to explore the effect of structure on the dispersion of silver particle in the phase of synthesized polyurethanes matrix. The thermal stability was increased by increasing the number of aromatic compound, while the degree of dispersion for silver particle was decreased. Silver particles showed better dispersion in the PU matrix having aromatic compounds when the soft segments were held constant. On the contrary, when the hard segment was held constant, silver particles on the PU matrix haying low $M_w$ of soft segment showed better dispersion than high $M_w$ of soft segment because poor chain mobility of low $M_w$ of soft segment restricted re-aggregation of silver particle. A sheet resistance of composite materials showed different aspects. In this case, the inter connection between silver particles was more important than its dispersion. In this study, the NDI-PEG 900/silver particle composite film showed the best thermal stability and electro conductivity.
$Ni_3Al$ is known as a good high temperature structural material because of high yield strength at ambient temperature. However, it is too brittle to use as a structural material because of their weak grain boundary. In this work, orientation measurement and related mechanical properties of directionally solidified NiAl/$Ni_3Al$ two-phase alloys with various compositions (Ni-23~27 at.%Al) were investigated for developing multi-phase DS-processed alloys with the growth rates of 10, 50 and 100 ${\mu}m/s$ in a modified Bridgeman type furnace. It was found that the multi-phase microstructures such as the $\gamma$ dendrite +${\gamma}'$ matrix duplex microstructure was formed in the hypoeutectic composition of 23 at.%Al, $\beta$ dendrite +${\gamma}'$ matrix duplex microstructure in the hypereutectic composition of 26 and 27 at.%Al. And ${\gamma}'$ single phase was formed in the composition of 24.5 and 25 at.%Al. The hypoeutectic alloy including $\gamma$ dendrites with ${\gamma}'$ matrix showed a large elongation of over 70% at room temperature. However, the room-temperature tensile elongation decreased with increasing Al contents because the volume fraction of brittle $\beta$ dendrites in the ductile ${\gamma}'$ matrix increased.
Structural studies have been performed on precipitation hardening discovered in $L1_2-ordered\;Ni_3(Al,Cr)$ containing 0.2 to 3.0 mol% of carbon using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Fine octahedral precipitates of $M_{23}C_6$ appeared in the matrix by aging at temperatures around 973 K after solution treatment at 1423 K. TEM examination revealed that the $M_{23}C_6$ phase and the matrix lattices have a cube-cube orientation relationship and keep partial atomic matching at the {111} interface. After prolonged aging or by aging at higher temperatures, the $M_{23}C_6$ precipitates then adopt a rod-like morphology elongated parallel to the <100> directions. Deformation at temperature below 973 K, typical Orowan loops were observed surrounding the $M_{23}C_6$ particles. At higher deformation temperatures, the Orowan loops disappeared and the morphology of dislocations at the particle-matrix interfaces suggested the existence of attractive interaction between dislocations and particles. The change of the interaction modes between dislocation and particles with increasing deformation temperature can be considered as a result of strain relaxation at the interface between matrix and particles.
The precipitates of $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlHf$ phase in B2-ordered NiAl system has been observed by using transmission electron microscope (TEM). The hardness of as-quenched NiAl-Hf alloys is high due to the larger strengthening. However, age hardening of this alloy is not main effect to increase hardness compared to the large microstructural variations during aging. At the beginning of aging, the $L2_1$-type $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates keep a lattice coherency with the NiAl matrix. The orientation relationship between the $Ni_2 AlHf$ precipitate and the NiAl matrix is <100>$_{Ni2AlHf}$//<100>$_{NiAl}$, {001}$_{Ni2AlHf}$//{001}$_{NiAl}$. By aging treatment for long time $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates lost their coherency and change their morphology to the spherical ones surrounded by misfit dislocations. The orientation relationship between the NiAl matrix and the $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitates, however, has been kept even after longer aging time. The lattice misfit between the $Ni_2AlHf$ precipitate and the NiAl matrix has been calculated by the selected electron diffraction patterns, and the spacings of misfit dislocations is about 4.5% at 1173 K.
The effect of aging heat treatment on microstructure evolution of the Ti-6Al-4Fe-0.25Si alloy with an initial microstructure of an elongated alpha was investigated. Aging treatments of the samples were carried out at $550^{\circ}C$ for up to 100 hours. The microstructure of the 5 hours heat-treated sample consisted of alpha grains, beta matrix and some TiFe intermetallic compounds that were precipitated from the beta matrix. Increasing the aging time to 10 hours, most of the beta matrix was decomposed to very fine alpha grains (${\sim}0.5{\mu}m$) and TiFe, and thus the volume fraction of the beta matrix was significantly decreased. EBSD analysis revealed that newly formed tertiary-alpha-grains in the vicinity of TiFe had high angle boundaries with respect to the primary and secondary alpha grains. As a result of these phase transformations during aging, the fraction of the alpha/alpha grain boundary was increased while that of the alpha/beta phase boundary was decreased.
