A cracking failure of a austenitic stainless steel elbow in a naphtha cracking line in a petrochenmical plant occurred, resulting in leakage of organic compound flowing inside the elbow. Due to the failure, emergency shutdown of the plant was enforced to repair the troubled part of the line. The repair cost as well as production loss during the unscheduled plant shutdown has cost the company a great amount of financial loss. In this studies, a failure analysis of the cracked elbow was performed using NDT, chemical analysis, microstructural analysis including optical microscopy as well as scanning electron microscopy with EPMA, mechanical testings such as tensile testing, hardness testing and Charphy impact test fractography. The results indicated that several problems such as a welding defect and presence of a detrimental phase which was found to be relate to improper postforming heat treatment process was identified and the failure was concluded to be due to a low temperature embrittlement of the defect-containing elbows.
Copper-based leadframe sheets were immersed in two kinds of hot alkaline solutions to form brown-oxide or black-oxide layer on the surface. The oxide-coated leadframe sheets were molded with epoxy molding compound (EMC). After post mold curing, the oxide-coated EMC-leadframe joints were machined to form sandwiched double-cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens. The SDCB specimens were used to measure the fracture toughness of the EMC/leadframe interfaces under quasi-Mode I loading conditions. Fracture surfaces were analyzed by various equipment to investigate failure path. The present paper deals with the failure path, and the cause of the failure path formation with an adhesion model will be treated in the succeeding paper.

Roughening of metal surfaces frequently enhances the adhesion strength of metals to polymers by mechanical interlocking. When a failure occurs at a roughened metal/polymer interface, the failure prone to be cohesive. In a previous work, an adhesion study on a roughened metal (oxidized copper-based leadframe)/polymer (Epoxy Molding Compound, EMC) interface was carried out, and the correlation between adhesion strength and failure path was investigated. In the present work, an attempt to interpret the failure path was made under the assumption that microvoids are formed in the EMC as well as near the roots of the CuO needles during compression-molding process. A simple adhesion model developed from the theory of fiber reinforcement of composite materials was introduced to explain the adhesion behavior of the oxidized copper-based leadframe/EMC interface and failure path. It is believed that this adhesion model can be used to explain the adhesion behavior of other similarly roughened metal/polymer interfaces.

The compressive axial collapse tests were performed to investigate collapse modes and energy absorption characteristics of Al/CFRP compound tubes which are aluminum tubes wrapped with CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics) outside the aluminum circular and square tubes. Based on collapse characteristics of aluminum tubes and CFRP tubes respectively, the axial collapse tests were performed for Al/CFRP compound tubes which have different CFRP orientation angles. Test results showed that Al/CFRP compound tubes supplemented the unstable brittle failure of CFRP tubes due to ductile nature of inner aluminum tubes. In the light-weight aspect, specific energy absorption were the highest for Al/CFRP, CFRP in the middle, and aluminum the lowest. Also, specific energy absorption of circular tubes was higher than square tubes'. It turned out that CFRP orientation angle of Al/CFRP compound tubes influence specific energy absorption together with the collapse modes of the tubes.

Steel companies are applying Ni-B or Ni-Co alloy plating to protect the surface of Continuous casting mold, and they are using saccharin polish which causes crack on plating layer due to sulfur in saccharin. It is considered that the Ni-S compound causes the cracking and additional tensile stresses. The Ni-Mn-B ternary alloy plating was developed for suppression of crack by forming Mn-S compound before Ni-S compound is formed, but there were no domestic or international standard on the Ni-Mn-B alloy plating. Therefore, reliability evaluation standard was established to evaluate the newly developed Ni-Mn-B plating. To develop accelerating life testing method, FMEA(Failure Mode & Effective analysis) was used to analyze the cause of the main failure in plating. The Ni-Mn-B reliability standard included accelerating life test method, and it was categorized by the fundamental performance test, environment test, and accelerated life test, and was designed to guarantee 1 000 hours of B10 life with 80 % reliable level.

Copper-based leadframe sheets were oxidized in a black-oxide forming solution, and molded with epoxy molding compound (EMC) to form sandwiched double-cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens. The adhesion strength of leadframe/EMC interface was measured in terms of fracture toughness by using SDCB specimens and the fracture surfaces were analyzed by various equipments such as glancing-angle XRD, AFM, and SEM. Results showed that three types of failure paths, which were closely related to the surface condition of leadframes before molding.

The adhesion model is based on the strengthening mechanism of fiber-reinforced composite. The present paper deals with the introduction of the adhesion model. The explanation of the failure path with the proposed adhesion model was introduced in the companion paper.
During the manufacturing and the service life of Au-Al wire bonded electronic packages, the ball bonds experience elevated temperatures and hence accelerated thermal diffusion reactions that promote the transformation of the Au-Al phases and the IMC growth. In this paper, the IC under high temperature storage (HTS) tests at $175^{\circ}C,\;200^{\circ}C$, and $250^{\circ}C$ are meticulously investigated. Thermal exposure resulted in the IMC growth, Kirkendall void and the crack of the Au-Al phases. The crack propagation occurs resulting in the failure of the Au-Al ball bonds. As the IC was exposed at the high temperature, decreased in the lifetime.
One of the methods of stabilizing retaining walls, embankments, and deep excavations is the implementation of plate anchors (like the Geolock wall anchor systems). Back-to-back Mechanically Stabilized Earth (BBMSE) walls are common stabilized earth structures that can be used for bridge ramps. But so far, the analysis of the interactive behavior of two back-to-back anchored walls (BBAW) by double-plates anchors (constructed closely from each other and subjected to the limited-breadth vertical loading) including interference of their failure and sliding surfaces has not been the subject of comprehensive studies. Indeed, in this compound system, the interaction of sliding wedges of these two back-to-back walls considering the shear failure wedge of the foundation, significantly impresses on the foundation bearing capacity, adjacent walls displacements and deformations, and their stability. In this study, the effect of horizontal distance between two walls (W), breadth of loading plate (B), and position of vertical loading was investigated experimentally. In addition, the comparison of using single and equivalent double-plate anchors was evaluated. The loading plate bearing capacity and displacements, and deformations of BBAW were measured and the results are presented. To evaluate the shape, form, and how the critical failure surfaces of the soil behind the walls and beneath the foundation intersect with one another, the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) technique was applied. The experimental tests results showed that in this composite system (two adjacent-loaded BBAW) the effective distance of walls is about W = 2.5*H (H: height of walls) and the foundation effective breadth is about B = H, concerning foundation bearing capacity, walls horizontal displacements and their deformations. For more amounts of W and B, the foundation and walls can be designed and analyzed individually. Besides, in this compound system, the foundation bearing capacity is an exponential function of the System Geometry Variable (SGV) whereas walls displacements are a quadratic function of it. Finally, as an important achievement, doubling the plates of anchors can facilitate using concrete walls, which have limitations in tolerating curvature.
The failure of water pipelines is progressed by several compound factors and the collection and analysis of data about pipeline failure are inevitable for effective pipeline rehabilitation. Data analysis of pipeline failure was already performed in USA and Europe. Based on such phenomena, failure characteristics about metropolitan pipelines in Korea were analyzed: The conclusions of this study are as followings. 1. The failure cause of pipelines can be classified into natural cause and artificial cause. Artificial cause is 32% of total causes, so artificial failure as several constructions happens frequently in Korea. Although the failure by old pipe is greatest of any other causes m classtfied cause, failure cause is not classified in detail now. 2. The damaged part of pipelines is affected by cities, distribution system inventory, bedding conditions, and so on. In this study, the failure of pipeline body(67%) is greater than the failure of pipeline joint(33%) in natural failure. 3. In regard to pipe materials, failure rate of DCIP(0.8456), PEP(0.7288), and GSP(0.6643) is greater than that of CIP(0.3985) and CWSP(0.2348). 4. Usually, faIlure rate is increased in proportion to diameter of pipeline. In this study, CIP, DCIP, and CWSP have clear trends. But the trends of PEP is reverse, the case of GSP, HP is obscure due to data shortage. 5. There are no direct relationships between burial age and failure rate of pipelines. 6. Annual breaks and winter(Nov.~Feb.) breaks of pipelines are investigated. As a result, WInter breaks to annual breaks of CIP is 51.3%(Seoul), 51.1%(Taegu),38.7%(Pusan). This phenomena have direct correlation with average winter temp. of cities.
