  • This paper predicted deformation due to thermal residual stress in composites using finite element analysis. Temperature cycle, Model shape, Laminate angle, Stacking sequence, chemical shrinkage of resin, and thermal expansion are affect composite deformation. Compare the results of the analytical model with the actual model of the same shape. This paper suggests that the analytical results can be applied to actual Model.

  • This paper presents a theoretical approach to calculate the resonant frequency of a thickness vibration mode in the radial direction for a 1-3 piezoelectric composite transducer of circular arch shape. For the composite transducer composed of a piezoelectric ceramic and a polymer, vibration parameters were derived according to the volume ratio of a ceramic, and a vibration characteristic equation was derived from the piezoelectric governing equations with adequate boundary conditions. The fundamental resonant frequencies were calculated numerically and verified by comparing them with those obtained from the finite element analysis and the experiment. The volume ratio and the thickness are more substantial than the curvature radius to determine the fundamental resonant characteristics, and the fundamental resonant frequency becomes higher for the larger volume ratio of the piezoelectric ceramic and for the smaller thickness.

  • In this paper, the forced vibration of damped composite beam with arbitrary section was analyzed. The damping material was assumed to have either complex shear modulus or complex Young???smodulus. Damped composite beam could be modeled using beam elements with less D.O.F. rather than solid elements. Finite element method for these methods was formulated and programmed using complex values. The results of frequency responses revealed good agreement with those of NASTRAN in several beam structures.

  • In this work, a closed-form analysis is performed for the structural response of coupled composite blades with multi-cell sections. The analytical model includes the effects of shell wall thickness, transverse shear, torsion warping and constrained warping. The mixed beam approach based on Reissner's semi-complementary energy functional is used to derive the beam force-displacement relations. The theory is validated against experimental test data and other analytical results for coupled composite beams and blades with single-cell box-sections and two-cell airfoils. Correlation of the present method with experimental results and detailed finite element results is found to be very good.

  • The theory with hierarchical warping functions had been used to analyze composite thin-walled structure, laminated beam and had good results. In the present paper, a series of hierarchical warping functions are developed to analyze the cylindrical bending problems of composite lamina. These warping functions which refine through-the-thickness variation of displacements were composed of basic and corrective functions by taking into account of anisotropic, material discontinues, and transverse shear and normal strain. Then the hierarchical finite element method was used to form a numerical algorithm. The distribution of the displacements, in-plane stresses, transverse shear stresses and transverse normal stress for composite laminate were analyzed with the present model. The results show that the present model has precise mechanical response compared with the first deformation transverse theory and the corrective order affects the accuracy of result.

  • This method surely needs a hole that causes local strength and stiffness deterioration of the structure because of stress intensity. In this work, three dimensional stress analysis of pin-loaded joint for quasi-isotropic composite laminates was performed using commercial finite element software. Stress distribution was calculated near the edge of the pin-leaded hole and effects of the stacking sequence on the delamination were investigated. Also, the delamination strength of the composite laminates was predicted using the Ye-delamination failure criterion and compared with the experimental results. finally, newly modified failure criterion has been suggested owing to the consideration of effects of interlaminar normal stress on the delamination strength.

  • Intentionally weakened girders near the beam-to-colum connection lead ductile failures at the weakened points prior to potential brittle failure at the connection points subjected to strong earthquake. Recent research investigated cyclic behavior of composite beams with a rectangular web opening and find out ductile failure of such beams due to plastic hinge formation of T-section at the four corners of the rectangular opening. But eventual failures of T-sections are resulted from local buckling of T-section having a narrow stem and a narrow bound of plastic hinge formation. This continuing research proposes double-circular opening instead of rectangular one in ofter to improve energy dissipation capacity as well as composite beam strength, Experimental test of two specimens was carried out and its results are compared with those of nonlinear finite element analyses

  • Recent days composite bridge deck is gaining attraction due to many advantages such as light weight, high strength, corrosion resistance, and high durability. In this study, composite sandwich deck models of hat, box, and triangular section type were fabricated by VARTM process. For those models, three point flexural test was carried out both in strong and weak axis. The experimental results are compared with each other to determine efficient section type. Also finite element analysis was performed and compared with experiments to verify analysis model. It has been demonstrated that composite sandwich deck can be used as bridge deck in the new construction and rehabilitation work.

  • Laminated composite plates are very useful in various fields of engineering where high strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios are required. Design optimization of composite structures has gained importance in recent years as the engineering applications of fiber reinforced materials have increased and weight savings has become an essential design objective. However, due to the anisotropic material properties of laminated composite structure it is very difficult to analyze and design. In this study, numerical optimization technique together with the finite element method is used to find the optimum design of FRP. Various combination of fiber orientation for the laminate layers are investigated and several local optimum solutions are found.

  • This work dealt with design and manufacturing of WIG vehicle wing using carbon/epoxy composite materials. In this study, structural design and analysis of carbon composite structure for WIG craft were performed. Firstly, structural design requirement of wing for WIG vehicle was investigated. After structural design, the structural analysis of the wing was performed by the finite element analysis method. It was performed that the stress, displacement and buckling analysis at the applied load condition. And also, manufacturing of subscale wing using carbon/epoxy composite materials was carried out. After structural test of target structure, structural test results were compared with analysis results. Through the structural analysis and test, it was confirmed that the designed wing structure is safety.
