In this research, an empirical study on the designed burst pressure of Type3 composite cylinder was performed by hydrostatic burst test equipment. The designed burst pressure of Type3 composite cylinders, which are 6.8 liter and 31 MPa of service pressure, was estimated with the analysis using the finite element method. In order to confirm its accuracy, the burst test of small Type3 composite cylinders was perfomed through three times. The burst test equipment can pressurize to 400 MPa. As a result of comparison between the designed burst pressure and actual burst pressure, the difference was less than 4 percentage. With a test result, the analysis accuracy was verified. This technique will be applied to both qualification and inspection for the composite cylinder.
This paper presents a stress safety of a composite pressure cylinder in which is composed of an aluminum liner and composite layers with carbon fiber/epoxy and glass fiber/epoxy resigns. The composite pressure cylinder for a hydrogen gas vehicle contains 9.2 liter hydrogen gas, and hydrogen gases are compressed by a filling pressure of 35MPa. The FEM computed results are analyzed based on the US DOT-CFFC basic requirement for a hydrogen gas cylinder and KS B ISO specification. The FEM results indicate that the stress, 247MPa of an aluminum liner is sufficiently low compared with that of 272MPa, which is 95% level of a yield stress for aluminum. And, the carbon fiber composite layers in which are wound on the surface of an aluminum cylinder are safe because the maximum carbon fiber stresses from 29.43% to 28.87% in hoop and helical directions are below 30% for a given minimum required burst pressure level, respectively. The carbon fiber composite layers are also safe because the stress ratios from 3.40 to 3.46 in hoop and helical directions are above 2.4 for a minimum safety level, respectively.
The advantages of Thermal sprayed coatings as a replacement for cast iron liners are reduced weight, better heat transfer and reduced cost. One of the most important performance attributes of a cylinder bore coating is its wear resistance, since it must survive the abrasive sliding of both the piston rings and the piston skirt. In this study, composite powders were prepared by ball milling of Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with SiC particles. The concentrations of SiC were 40 and 60wt%. The composite powders were sprayed using Metco-9MB plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at 500℃ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to improve with heat treatment and superior to the commercially available G.C.I.(gray cast iron). AlSiMg-40SiC heat-treated coatings showed the best wear resistance in this study.
An analytical model is consider to scrutinize axisymmetric wave propagation in multiferroic hollow cylinder with rotating and initial stressed forces, where a piezomagnetic (PM) material layer is bonded to a piezoelectric (PE) cylinder together by Linear elastic materials with voids. Both distinct material combos are taken into account. Three displacement potential functions are introduced to uncouple the equations of motion, electric and magnetic induction. The numerical calculations are carried out for the non-dimensional frequency by fixing wave number and thickness. The arrived outputs are plotted as the dispersion curves for different layers. The results obtained in this paper can offer significance to the application of PE/PM composite hollow cylinder via LEMV and CFRP layers for the acoustic wave and microwave technologies.

A nonlinear finite element method is presented to evaluate the torsional buckling moment and failure of composite laminated cylinders. For the progressive failure analysis, the complete unloading method is used based on the maximum stress failure criteria. An arc-length method is incorporated to trace the postbuckling equilibrium path. Present finite element method is verified by the existing experimental and analytical results. The results of the parametric study show that the torsional buckling moments are sensitive to the geometric change, but are not much affected by the lay-up angle. All cylinders tested numerically show the unstable torsional buckling, and therefore the torsional buckling always leads to the catastrophic failure.

For lightweight and flexible structures, it is important to suppress the vibrations induced by interactions between fluid and structures. This paper presents the PPF/Adaptive control of the vortex-induced vibration of composite beam with rigid cylinder in which the fluid force is considered as an external excitation on the structure. For the problems considered here, the excitation frequency (vortex-shedding frequency) is assumed to be equal to the natural frequency of the structure. A pair of piezoceramic devices attached bottom of the composite structure was used as actuators. Simulation and experiment were carried out with the designed controller and effectiveness of the PPF/Adaptive PPF control was verified by both experimental and simulation results.

The Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology has advanced in many application areas. In this research, two different types, cylinder and scaffold, of implantable Drug Delivery System (DDS) were fabricated using Nano Composite Deposition System (NCDS), one of the RP systems. The anti-cancer drug (5-fluorouracil, 5-FU), biodegradable polymer (PLGA(85: 15)), and bio ceramic (Hydroxyapatite, HA) were used to form drug-polymer composite material. Both types of DDS were evaluated in vivo environment for two weeks. For evaluation, the cumulative drug release and shape stability were measured. Test results showed that the scaffold DDS provide higher cumulative drug release and has better stability than cylinder DDS.

The shape memory alloys (SMAs) are often used in smart materials and structures as the active components. Their ability to provide a high recovery force and a large displacement has been used in many applications. In this paper the radial displacement of an externally pressurized elliptic composite cylinder where SMA liner or strips actuators are bonded on its inner or outer surface is investigated numerically. The elliptic composite cylinders consisting of an inlet duct system with SMAs are designed and analyzed to determine the feasibility of such a system for the removal of stiffeners from an externally pressurized duct of an aircraft inlet. The deformations caused by prestrained SMAs placed on either surface of an elliptic composite cylinder are studied when activated. The externally pressurized elliptic composite cylinders with the SMA actuators were analyzed using the 3-D finite element method incorporated with 3-D SMA behaviors. The results show that the role of stiffeners may be switched by the activated light SMA actuators.

This paper derives numerically new buckling Knockdown factors for the lightweight design of the composite propellant tanks for space launch vehicles. A nonlinear finite element analysis code, ABAQUS, is used for the present postbuckling analysis of composite cylinders under compressive loads. Various thickness ratios (R/t) and slenderness ratios (L/R) are considered and Single Perturbation Load Approach is applied to represent the geometric initial imperfection of the composite cylinder. For the composite cylinder with thickness ratio of 500 and slenderness ratio of 2.04, the buckling Knockdown factor derived in this work is higher by 84.38% than NASA's previous buckling design criteria. Therefore, it is investigated that a lightweight design is possible when the present Knockdown factors are used for the design of composite propellant tanks. In addition, it is shown that global buckling loads and buckling Knockdown factors decrease as the thickness ratio or slenderness ratio of composite cylinders increases.
