  • Since terrestrial input plays a major role in coastal primary production, an understanding of land-ocean coupling (LOC) is key to understand coastal ecological changes. In this study, the LOC has been classified into three stages (i.e., the baseflow, plume event and residual flow). In order to characterize its pattern in Nakdong River estuary, multi-platform data were obtained from remote sensing (geostationary ocean color image (GOCI)), in-situ measurement (marine environment information system (MEIS)), on-site measurement (discharge data and meteorological data). The MEIS data were grouped into three stages of LOC using principal component analysis (PCA), and the LOC (2013 ~ 2018) was examined at each stage using multi-platform data. In the Nakdong River estuary, the maximum value of chlorophyll-a (chl-a) was unexpectedly appeared during the plume event. It is assumed that there was no significant increase in turbidity, expected during the typical plume event, together with the weak flushing effect, caused the enhanced phytoplankton growth. Compared with other estuaries, LOC is common in estuaries affected by freshwater inflow, but LOC has different pattern depending on the size of the plume. While estuaries that form small plumes of about 10 km (low freshwater discharge and weak flushing effect) observed high chl-a in the plume event because the phytoplankton can response to the increased nutrient more rapidly. estuaries that form large plumes of more than 100 km est (high freshwater discharge and strong flushing effect) follow the typical LOC pattern conceptualized in this study (high chl-a in the residual flow).

  • This paper presents the effective technique to design a six-axis load cell by using experimental design with an orthogonal array. A binocular structure is used as a basic sensing element for a load cell instead of the parallel plate structure. The finite element method is adopted to obtain strain distributions of the sensing element, and by doing the analysis of variances, its results are utilized in determining the factor which is more influential to the output strain. Calibration test results show that the developed six-axis loa cell with the maximum capacities of 196 N in forces and 19.6 N. m in moments is evaluated to be useful with the coupling error less than 2.5%.

  • We have demonstrated an in-line polarization splitter based on a side-polished fiber coupler including a thin metal intermediate layer. The experimental results revealed that the metal layer with proper thickness prevents TE polarization component from optical coupling between two contacted side-polished fibers, whereas it allows TM polarization component to the coupling. The design and fabrication techniques about the polarization splitter exploiting the side-polished fibers have been presented. The fabricated polarization splitter exhibited 18dB and 23dB of isolation ratio for TE polarization and TM polarization, respectively. The measured insertion loss for TE and TM polarization was 0.7dB and 1.3dB, respectively.

  • An improved bridgeless interleaved boost power factor correction (PFC) rectifier to improve power efficiency and component utilization is proposed in this study. With combined conventional bridgeless PFC circuit and interleaved technology, the proposed rectifier consists of two interleaved and magnetic inter-coupling boost bridgeless converter cells. Each cell operates alternatively in the critical conduction mode, which can achieve the soft-switching characteristics of the switches and increase power capacity. Auxiliary blocking diodes are employed to eliminate undesired circulating loops and reduce current-sensing noise, which are among the serious drawbacks of a dual-boost PFC rectifier. Magnetic component utilization is improved by symmetrically coupling two inductors on a unique core, which can achieve independence from each other based on the auxiliary diodes. Through the interleaved approach, each switch can operate in the whole line cycle. A simple control scheme is employed in the circuit by using a conventional interleaved controller. The operation principle and theoretical analysis of the converter are presented. A 600 W experimental prototype is built to verify the theoretical analysis and feasibility of the proposed rectifier. System efficiency reaches 97.3% with low total harmonic distortion at full load.

  • Grid Connected inverter is produced current to deliver power to grid. To provide low THD current, LCL filters is effective to filter high frequency component of current output from inverter. To provide sinusoidal waveform, there are many researchers have been proposed several controllers for grid-connected inverter controllers. Synchronous Reference Frame (SRF)-based controller is the most popular methods. SRF-based controller is capable for reducing both of zero-steady state error and phase delay. But SRF based controller is contained cross-coupling components, which generate some difficulties to analyze. In this paper, SRF based controller is analyzed. By applying decoupling control, cross-coupling component is eliminated and single phase model of the system is obtained. Through this single phase model, gain controller is designed. To reduce steady state error, proportional gain is set as high as possible, but it may produce instability. To compromise between a minimum steady state error and stability, the single phase model is evaluate through Root Locus and Bode diagram. PSIM simulation is used to verify the analysis.

  • As gas turbines for power generation become increasingly more important for high capacity and high efficiency, the technological development and investment of companies are increasing globally. Gas turbine manufacturing technology is only owned by a few companies such as GE, Siemens, and MHI, and our country currently depends on imports of processing technology and component parts. The core part of the gas turbine is curvic coupling tooth processing technology that improves turbine efficiency by smoothly transmitting power to the turbine rotor. Curvic coupling tooth machining and evaluation research is restricted overseas, and it is not underway in Korea. Therefore, in this study, roughing and finishing process technology for curvic coupling tooth machining is developed and a quantitative evaluation method is proposed. For the development of machining technology, the analysis of critical parameters was performed through C & E analysis. In the roughing process, the conditions considering the minimum machining time and tool load ratio were determined. Finishing process conditions were determined based on the contact ratio between the tooth surfaces. The image-processing method is presented for evaluation of the contact ratio and a verification test was performed.

  • Integration of active and passive waveguides is an essential component of the photonic integrated circuit and its elements. Butt joint is one of the important technologies to accomplish it with significant advantages. However, it suffers from high optical loss at the butt joint junction and need of accurate process control to align both waveguides. In this study, we used beam propagation method to simulate an integrated device composed of a laser diode and spot size converter (SSC). Two SSCs with different mode properties were combined with laser waveguide and optical coupling efficiency was simulated. The SSC with larger near field mode showed lower coupling efficiency, however its far field pattern was narrower and more symmetric. Tapered passive waveguide was utilized for enhancing the coupling efficiency and tolerance of waveguide offset at the butt joint without degrading the far field pattern. With this technique, high optical coupling efficiency of 89.6% with narrow far field divergence angle of 16°×16° was obtained.

  • This study aimed to develop an approach to accurately predict the wind models and wind effects of large wind turbines. The wind-induced vibration characteristics of a 5 MW tower-blade coupled wind turbine system have been investigated in this paper. First, the blade-tower integration model was established, which included blades, nacelle, tower and the base of the wind turbine system. The harmonic superposition method and modified blade element momentum theory were then applied to simulate the fluctuating wind field for the rotor blades and tower. Finally, wind-induced responses and equivalent static wind loads (ESWL) of the system were studied based on the modified consistent coupling method, which took into account coupling effects of resonant modes, cross terms of resonant and background responses. Furthermore, useful suggestions were proposed to instruct the wind resistance design of large wind turbines. Based on obtained results, it is shown from the obtained results that wind-induced responses and ESWL were characterized with complicated modal responses, multi-mode coupling effects, and multiple equivalent objectives. Compared with the background component, the resonant component made more contribution to wind-induced responses and equivalent static wind loads at the middle-upper part of the tower and blades, and cross terms between background and resonant components affected the total fluctuation responses, while the background responses were similar with the resonant responses at the bottom of tower.

  • A three-dimensional thermal-hydraulic code, CUPID, has been developed for the analysis of transient two-phase flows at component scale. The CUPID code adopts a two-fluid three-field model for two-phase flows. A semi-implicit two-step numerical method was developed to obtain numerical solutions on unstructured grids. This paper presents an overview of the CUPID code development and assessment strategy. The governing equations, physical models, numerical methods and their improvements, and the systematic verification and validation processes are discussed. The code couplings with a system code, MARS, and, a three-dimensional reactor kinetics code, MASTER, are also presented.

  • This study is an investigation of the effect of cracks on the dynamical characteristics of a cantilever beam, having multiple open-edge transverse cracks. The flexibilities due to crack have been identified for several crack depths and locations. In the study the finite element method and component mode synthesis methods are used. Coupling the components is performed by a flexibility matrix taking into account the interaction forces. Each component is modelled by cantilever beam finite elements with two nodes and three degrees of freedom at each node. The results obtained lead to conclusion that, by using the drop in the natural frequencies and the change in the mode shapes, the presence and nature of cracks in a structure can be detected. There is some counter-evidence, however, that the effects due to multiple cracks may interact to make detection more difficult than for isolated cracks.
