  • This study analyzes the business strategy of fast fashion through Zara, a successful fashion brand from Inditex Spain. An in-depth case approach is adopted based on extensive secondary research that includes literature and press releases published in Korean as well as English. The findings of this research demonstrate a speedy and flexible process occurring in the supply chain of its fast fashion business and the cooperation between the company's headquarters and international subsidiaries. Zara's headquarters executes four representative strategies: competitive market research, an integrated organizational structure, small quantity batch production, and a specialized distribution system. Zara's international subsidiaries execute their own four representative strategies: differentiated international expansion, independent human resource management, small but fundamental IT, and maximization of store resources. These two core parts intimately work together to satisfy target customers all over the world by bringing competitive advantages to the fashion business and represent a key concept of Zara's business strategy. The main drawbacks of case studies are limited validity and representativeness restraining the potential for making generalizations. However this case is considered sufficient to provide valuable insight and improve the understanding of operation strategy in fast fashion.

  • Although the design-build (DB) delivery system has been taking great strides in the world and relevant researches have also been quite abundant, few studies have dealt with its potential impacts on the construction industry as a whole. This research first identified the potential entry barrier factors, which may hinder the market access, based on the theory of industrial economics and characteristics of DB project. Then through a nation-wide questionnaire survey involving 103 construction contractors and engineering consultants, the influences of each factor on company's competitiveness and corporate strategies were scrutinized, and consequently, the evolution of the construction industry was examined. It is found that as opposed to the traditional design-bid-build delivery system, the DB delivery system elevates competitive advantages of large organizations in terms of the financial capability, working experience, human resource, and administrative strength, and among them, the financial strength was concluded to be the most significant force in differentiating corporate strategies and widening the gap of competitiveness between companies. It is inferred if the government extensively adopts DB delivery system, large organizations that already possess the competitive advantage tend to obtain both design and construction abilities, and dominate the DB market. Small and medium sized companies will find little room to maneuver and be forced to become specialty sub-contractors.

  • This paper describes new optimization strategy that offers significant improvements in performance over existing methods for geometry design of frame structures. In this study, an imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA) and ant colony optimization (ACO) are combined to reach to an efficient algorithm, called Imperialist Competitive Ant Colony Optimization (ICACO). The ICACO applies the ICA for global optimization and the ACO for local search. The results of optimal geometry for three benchmark examples of frame structures, demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the new method presented in this work. The results indicate that the new technique has a powerful search strategies due to the modifications made in search module of ICACO. Higher rate of convergence is the superiority of the presented algorithm in comparison with the conventional mathematical methods and non hybrid heuristic methods such as ICA and particle swarm optimization (PSO).

  • Product-service system (PSS) is a system of products and service, supporting networks and infrastructure that is designed to be competitive. PSSs satisfy customers' needs more effectively and have a lower environmental impact than traditional business models. Therefore, many companies and governmental institutes are eager to implement the PSSs as a new business model. In this paper, we focus on industrial practices as new business models for the company. PSS, especially, is popular in electronic industry, so one can often observe such examples as iPod, iPhone, e-Book and etc in the field. We first thoroughly investigate the current practices of PSS in Korean electronic industry. The examples are surveyed and projected directions are given. Then, non-electronic PSSs are surveyed. Especially mechanical PSSs are intensively discussed. Based on the survey results, we propose several major development strategies of Sustainable PSS (SPSS). SPSS will bring a competitive edge for company as realization of sustainable development of PSS considering economy, society, and environment.
