Field Experiments on Stack Effect in Stairwells of High-Rise Building (고층건물 피난계단에서의 연돌효과에 대한 현장실험)

  • The fact that the major cases of life casualties are from smoke in the fire accidents and the expected steep increase of skyscrapers, huge spaces, multiplexes and huge scaled underground spaces demand establishment of efficient smoke countermeasure. The architectural factors affecting the pressure field of building should be examined for the successful design and operation of smoke management system and the stack effect is one of the important factors. The field experiments on stack effect in stairwells of high-rise building with regard to open/close condition of door are carried out to evaluate the features of pressure applied to door between each compartments, i.e, stair, lobby and accommodation. The procedures and results of experiments are presented.

Hydrogen Behavior at a Subcomparment in The Containment Building

  • For hydrogen management in severe accidents with degraded nuclear core of PWR's, several experiments have been performed in the SNU hydrogen mixing facility. The objectives are understanding the extent of hydrogen mixing and analyzing the effects of factors which dominate uniform or non-uniform mixing at compartments in the containment building. The facility represents on a 1/11th linearly scaled model of the YGN unit 3&4, hydrogen was simulated by helium. Because there are the gaps between safety injection tank and compartment layers in the containment, the test facility was constructed in three dimentinal mode for analyzing of mixture behavior through the gaps. From the experimental results we could conclude that overall hydrogen concentration distributed uniformly in the free volume of the test compartment, but fluctuated in the gaps. This paper is focused on experimental result from several experiment.

  • The last years have seen a dramatic increase of the new-building orders for Very Large Ore Carriers(VLOC), mainly driven by the increasing demand for iron ore imports from Australia and brazil to the steel mills in china. Thus the vibrant research of VLOC aimed cost-cutting by optimum compartment have conducted in recent years. In this study, we are also trying to find ways to reduce longitudinal strength by optimum compartment and check additionally whether the modified compartments were satisfied with SOLAS bottom damage.

Food Service Management in Elementary School in Chunnam Province (전남 초등학교의 급식유형별 급식관리 실태)

  • This study was undertaken to assess the school flood service management and its perception by dietitians. Questionnaries were developed and answered by 162 dietitians in elementary schools in Chollanam-do. The duration of the flood service system was the longest in remote areas followed by rural and urban areas. The average number of persons served a day was 680 per dietitians. More than three schools were supervised by 52.4% of dietitians. Lack of facilities, including restrooms for the flood service personnel and storage compartments for convenience products were indicated. Regardless of the type of school flood service system, the dietitians pointed out that they urgency needed gas fryers, gas griddles and vegetable cutters, which would be helpful in preparing fried flood for the students. Despite the dietitians' eagerness to teach nutritional education, 80.9% of the respondents did not provide nutritional education to the students, because of the lack of class roomtime. It was suggested that the teaching nutritional education by dietitians was desperately needed for the improvement of health and the nutritional status of school children.

Effects of Inplane Modes in SEA on Structure-Borne Noise Transmission in Ship Structures

  • It is normal practice to consider bending wave modes only, when one applies SEA (Statistical Energy Analysis) to ship structures because of complexities in SEA modeling and evaluation of coupling loss factors for inplane modes. According to the result of Tratch[1], the inplane wave modes becomes important for the analysis of a foundation structure as the distance from the source and receiver increases. In this paper, the effect of inplane wave modes on structure-borne noise propagation in ship structures is presented. It is shown that the inplane wave could increase the noise level more than 10 dB compared with the results without inplane wave modes at high frequency bands for compartments far from the source location.

  • Radiological analysis of chest lesions detected on chest radiographs or CT scans begins with their classification into parenchymal, pleural, or extrapleural lesions according to their presumed origin. The mediastinum is divided anatomically into the anterior, middle, and posterior mediastinal compartments, and localizing a mediastinal mass to one of these divisions can facilitate their differential diagnosis. A differential diagnosis of a mediastinal mass is usually based on a number of findings, including its location; the structure from which it is arising; whether it is single, multifocal (involving several different areas or lymph node groups), or diffuse; its size and shape; its attenuation (fatty, fluid, soft-tissue, or a combination of these); the presence of calcification along with its characteristics and amount; and its opacification following the administration of contrast agents.

  • This paper investigates wave loads of ships that suffer sinkage due to flood in a compartment caused by damage on the side of the hull. By analyzing ships with various sizesof damage opening, the influence of opening size on ship response is investigated. The motion of the damaged ship is analyzed by using the boundary element method, based on three-dimensional potential theory, considering hydrodynamic pressure in the flooded compartments. The shear forces, bending moments and torsional moments are calculated by the direct integration of the three dimensional hydrodynamic pressure on the outer and inner hulls. A RORO passenger ship with length of 174.8 m is considered in the numerical example, and results for wave loads are discussed.

  • This paper describes the accident analysis by modelling the current transformer mounting in a metal-clad switchgear at 22.9kV. In analyzing the accident, the reconstruction at the current transformer mounting(VCB connecting guide) has to be taken into account. The accident was modelled as a 3-phase ground fault occurring between the end plate of 22.9kV lines and the safety shutter at the current transformer mounting of the VCB inside the metal clad switchgear. Since the outside maintenance of the metal clad switchgear is restricted by the enclosed compartments, Its circumference has to be kept clean. Through the reconstruction results, it was confirmed that the fault of the enclosed switchboard could be reduced when the shutter made of Fe material was chanted into an insulation.

  • The emerging concept of the 'neurovascular unit' may enable a powerful paradigm shift for neuroscience. Instead of a pure focus on the 'neurobiology' of disease, an opportunity now exists to return to a more integrative approach. The neurovascular unit emphasizes that signaling between vascular and neuronal compartments comprise the basis for both function and dysfunction in brain. Hence, brain disorders are not just due to death of neurons, but instead manifested as cell signaling perturbations at the neurovascular interface. In this mini-review, we will examine 3 examples of this hypothesis: neurovascular mechanisms involved in the thrombolytic therapy of stroke, the crosstalk between neurogenesis and angiogenesis, and the link between vascular dysfunction and amyloid pathology in Alzheimer's disease. An understanding of cell-cell and cell-matrix signaling at the neurovascular interface may yield new approaches for targeting CNS disorders.

  • Available Safe Egress Time(ASET) is the time available for occupants to evacuate safely In compartment fire, and It depends on the time of fire detection and hazardous conditions. The purpose of thls study Is to provide an analytical basis and experimental data for estimating the fire growth in compartments and the available safe egress time, and to compare the experimental data with those proposed equations. As a result, hazard order Is poison to CO, descent of smoke layer, poison to $CO_2$, burn to hot smoke layer, and lack of $O_2$, ASET is lengthened in this order. Also, The more fire load is increased, the more ASET is shorted.
