Housing is the most important factor for the elderly and the disabled to live safely and independently. If they want to stay in their familiar community as long as possible, to support their stay in their house must be needed. The purpose of this study was to investigate the housing alterations for the elderly and the disabled. To accomplish the purpose of this study, three cases that had altered housing to fit their needs in three countries, were selected. In Korean case of alterations for the disabled, bathroom and kitchen were the altered spaces in the house. But active alterations were not done, because of the limited expense for the alterations and housing ownership, rented. In one case of housing construction for the elderly in Japan, there was no level difference in the interior. Two bedrooms were provided for the husband and the wife, because of the difference of time to bed. The sunroom for enjoying the outside of the nature was provided. In swedish case, due to the supports of the government and local authority, the house was altered at many spaces such as bathroom, kitchen, ramp at the entrance, elevator and so forth. In conclusion, sufficient supports of government and community services can increase the housing quality of people. The ultimate goal of housing alterations must be done not for the elderly and disabled but for all people.
This study aims to investigate planning characteristics of common and living space in the dormitory buildings on campus in Chungcheong province. A document research method was used to analyze and classified into floor-plan, zoning and area. Also site visits were conducted at 8 dormitory buildings of 4 universities, and drawings were collected and compared for this research. The results of this study were as follows; 1)Most floor plans of public spaces had corridor types and integrated public space types. The typical floorplan of living space was 2person-1bedroom and apartment type which shared livingroom, bathroom, restroom and shower between bedrooms. The living space type of dormitory buildings was more complex and growth in size. Unit community combined 2-4person per 1bedroom in floor plan can help student with identity and affiliated formation. 2)The types of the spatial composition in public spaces were devided into three zones; study, living and administrative zones such as seminar room, public bathroom and storage, etc. This results shows that various types of public space for the improvement of community of small group has recently become more important than basic sanitary space in public space of dormitory buildings on campus.
The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of service facilities, and needs for service facilities using for leisure in multi-family housing properties. The multi-family housing complexes in Seoul were selected in this study. Site visits, analysis of drawing of complex and questionnaire survey were conducted. The statistical techniques used for data analysis included frequencies. The research results were as follows; The studied apartment complexes provided the appropriate and adequate service facilities in accordance to the regulations of multi-family housing. Playground for children, senior center, resting place were found in all the complexes, but the presence of exercise facilities, shared spaces, green spaces, and community parks was somewhat different across the studied complexes. Satisfaction with leisure facilities were different with the apartment complexes. The respondents who had lived older apartment complexes were more likely to increase dissatisfaction, and the reason was attributed to no presence of the leisure facilities they wanted to use. The respondents said that such service facilities using for leisure facilities as playground for children, senior center, community parks, walkways, reading room, and fitness center were highly needed.
The demographic and environmental changes such as the decrease of the population growth rate and the increase of the population of the senior citizens, which become issues of the modern society, are bringing numerous changes of many aspects like national economy, community, and culture. These social phenomena give impacts on the school facilities as well. Thus owing to the decrease of the number of the students, the number of the newly constructed schools has been decreased drastically, and moreover the merger of the schools cause many schools to be default. Meanwhile, the school facilities have been expanded into the functions of the local community centers, and the various educational activities demand the diversity and flexibility of the spaces. These factors add more burdens to the current schools. Therefore the school facilities are needed to adopt a flexible and relevant change necessary for using the spaces in accordance with the changed needs of the times, and are needed to reinvented continuously not to limit the educational and social activities because of the degradation of the school facilities. Yet because there are no proper criteria for doing the task, problems related to the relevance of the task and the unnecessary investment are raised. So through this study I tried to demonstrate the standardized index in terms of the sequential priority of upgrading the facilities among the schools.
In order to improve the housing environment and quality of life for the rural elderly, this study aims to identify and present the status of community centers, most widely used by the elderly in rural areas. Through the literature review, type and space elements of community centers were derived and selected three target areas were investigated. As a result of literature analysis, the space type of rural community centers were classified as indoor space and outdoor space. The indoor space types were classified as entry space, public space, sanitary space and the outdoor space were classified as entry space and leisure space. Some community centers were surveyed in Seocheon-gun, Wanju-gun, and Cheongju-city. Results indicate the indoor and outdoor space design and elements were undergoing a lot of inconvenience partly because standard design was considered and the space was not planned for the physical, psychological and social health of the rural elderly. Therefore, this study will be used as a basis for building healthier and more friendly residential environments that can enhance the health and quality of life for the elderly in rural areas.
Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization in Korea urban environmental problems such as changes in climate and shortage in green spaces and social problems such as lacks of interactions with neighbors have occurred and community garden appeared as one means to solve such problems. The purpose of this study is to comprehensively identify the evaluation items to measure the effect of community gardens. This study comprehensively researched the evaluation items through literature studies of domestic and overseas documents and verified their contents through case studies of domestic site. As a result of this study, a total of 39 measurement items for evaluation was identified and these items were divided into five large categories of "eco-environmental effect," "production and economic effect," "physical effect," "psychological effect," and "social effect" and these categories could be subdivided into 12 types. This study can be used as references for positively introducing the community gardens in Korea and has a meaning that it can be developed as an analyzing tool for measuring the concrete effects of community gardens when they are introduced in Korea in large numbers hereafter.
Purpose: With particular focus on the analysis of elderly community space in local communities, this study aims to propose policies and points to consider in the planning and management of community space that can encourage the elderly to actively participate in community activities. Methods: The study explores five different Japanese community spaces that have been utilized as platforms for intergenerational interactions; the research was carried out by literature review, field work and interviews. Results: The results are as follows. First, the planning of the community space for the elderly must be combined with the space that the locals often use. Community space should not be seen as a place for a specific generation, but for everyone to interact with each other at any time; hence it must be fostered to be accessible for anyone regardless of age. Second, community space for the elderly requires to be planned as an accessible place for everyone such as cafes and restaurants. The adjacent areas require social infrastructure like libraries and public baths which are frequently used by people from various age groups. Third, in order to spark off the intergenerational community space as the stronghold of local communities, it needs to be a place where the elderly is given sufficient role and meaning as a member of the community. To achieve this, it is essential to support the locals to take active measures in creating job opportunities for the elderly and the disabled, and to develop voluntary self-sufficiency and volunteering programs.
The purpose of this study is to draw safe environmental project factors for enhancing the safety of children in peripheral space around children's park and suggest environmental project measures for peripheral spaces around children's parks, based on the survey of children's park users' consciousness on peripheral spaces. Physical space range for this study was limited to low-rise housing area wihtin the radius of 250m, as peripheral spaces around children's parks in which children's playgrounds were built. In addition, the target areas for examining users' consciousness on peripheral spaces around children's parks were selected according to following criteria. 1)areas with highter portion of children; 2) those with higher portion of single-family houses/multi-housing/tenement houses, which constitute low-rise housing areas; and 3) those with higher safety accident rate of children, which was measured based on criminal and traffic accidents. The finding are as follows: first, users' consciousness on safety accidents that are likely to occur in peripheral spaces around children's parks was examined to show that there is most prominent difference between satisfaction and necessity. This result suggests that users are clearly conscious of the necessity of environmental improvement rather than the satisfaction with the current peripheral environment around children's park.; second, for the difference between satisfaction with and necessity of environmental project factors for access/boundary spaces around children's pakrs, there is most significant difference between the satisfaction with and the necessity of establishment of facilities against illegal parking for clear visibility of community roads, for access spaces, and the separate establishment of bicycle racks around main entry into parks, for boundary spaces. Users' necessity of the establishment of them is judged to be derived from the fact that the safety of children and even adults is threatened, because bicycles invaded into the deep inside of children parks. This study analyzed a correlation between satisfaction and necessity through factor and IPA analysis, and should be initially considenred if the future environmental improvement project would be conducted to promote safe environment in peripheral spaces around children's parks in the future. It will be necessary to provide practical environmental project factors through a field investigation.
The aim of this paper is to find out different preference of common spaces and shared activities in senior cohousing community between regions in Korea: Seoul and other cities. Social survey was conducted nationwide and the respondents were 50s only, since they are the generation who will face to elderly housing subject within 10 years in turbulent Korean society. Collected data, about 1000, were analyzed by SPSS program using frequency, percentage, and Chi-square test. In summary, respondents mostly would like to move to senior cohousing on circumstance when they remain alone without big difference between regions. Loneliness and housekeeping were considered as the most difficult issues for the elderly to manage by themselves. Among common spaces, exercise room was the most preferred space to meeting room and kitchen. Exercise room was more preferred in Seoul than in other cities, on the contrary meeting room was evidently less preferred in other cities than in Seoul. Regarding shared activities, resident meeting, gardening, and common meal were revealed as less preferred activities than hobby exercise and tea meeting. As a conclusion, I would like to propose that a big common living room is better to be designed for meeting room cum dining and gathering room with flexibility in order to give residents chances to know each other more often. And since common space and shared activity show different preferences by regions, those are to be designed and planned reflecting region's different circumstance.
This study was designed to derive the characteristics of shared space composition of shared housing for one-person household through an examination on domestic and overseas cases. To examine the systematic approach to the planning of shared space, the concept and current status of shared housing were analyzed; and, the concept of shared space was derived based on the concept of Altman and, through the analysis on cases of shared housing, the shared space was classified into shared spaces for living support, passage, and community. And then, based on the standard of classification of shared space, the configuration of shared space in shared housing was examined through the analysis on domestic and oversea cases. Thereby, the arrangement and function of each type of compartment in shared space were examined and the configuration of the shared space prepared for an entrance of residents was analyzed and classified into 6 types. Each type revealed a relationship between privacy, living, passage and internal community which were all provided with respective configurative characteristics of each space. Result obtained from this study is estimated that they could be used as a basic data for the design or planning of shared spaces in shared and further, they could also be employed for the design or development of shared spaces of such houses taken the type and characteristics of residents into account.
