  • Objectives: This study identified how personal characteristics, healthy behavior and social capital might influence on physical activity of adults. Methods: This study used data from the health survey of a city of Korea. We surveyed 1,000 adults sampled by stratified sampling methods from 67,889 households. Outcome variable was the stage of physical activity which was broken into 5 categories. Sociodemographic factors, healthy behavior, self-rated health status and social capital were used as control variables. Sociodemographic factors included age, sex, educational status, economic status measured by deprivation score, residential period within survey city. Social capital was measured by Integrated Questionnaire for the Measurement of Social Capital (SC-IQ). This study used chi-square test and ordered logistic regression models to examine the associations between independent variables and physical activity. Variables were added to the regression model in three groups using a hierarchical approach. Results: Physical activity was significantly more likely to become active if they have higher educational status, healthier behavior. Among the six dimensions of SC-IQ, only "groups and networks" that is structural dimensions of social capital and "trust and solidarity" that is cognitive dimensions of social capital were significantly related to physical activity of adults. We found that a person having higher density of membership and having larger size of networks showed the high possibility of active physical activity. A person having high solidarity was significantly associated with physical activity, but general trust was inversely related to physical activity. Output dimensions of social capital did not show significant relationship to physical activity. Conclusion: We found that social capital is useful concept to explain health behaviors like physical activity. However we must consider social, cultural and political context of the study to evaluate the effect of social capital to health status and health determinants and to capture the exact meaning of relationship between them. We suggest further researches to refine the concept of social capital and to explain the relationship of social capital to diverse health determinants.

  • The aim of this study is to identify economic geographical determinants that affect the sustainability of the social economy. The sustainability of the social economy means the sustainability of the pursuit of social value as well as the sustainability of business operation. This study is aiming to economic geographical determinants as factors affecting sustainability of the social economy and extracted measurement index through examination on the theory and case study. As a result, 10 items in two areas(the sustainability of the pursuit of social value, the sustainability of business operation) had been deducted as the measurement index of which sustainability of the social economy. In addition, 20 items in four areas(local networks, intermediary organizations, local community culture and public roles) had been deducted as economic geographical determinants. Multiple regression analysis through 193 firm surveys suggests that 'local networks', 'intermediary organizations', and 'public roles' have an positive impact on sustainability. This result implies a need for policies to create an economic geography ecosystem of social economy.

  • More advanced and demanding applications, like videoconferencing, video on demand. distributed computing etc., have been devised thanks to the availability of enhanced network feature. Network technologies need to be enhanced to support these applications and to cope with the increasing number of users. Increasing the availability of network resources is just not enough to achieve this goal; scalable network architecture. increased packet forwarding capabilities, a wider range of services are all additional requirements. MOLS (multiprotocol label Switching) is one of the new networking techniques under standardization in the scientific community. In this paper, we analyze the performance of label switching in ATM networks. Simulation tests were performed. In this simulation, we set a simple network configuration and used internet traffic traces from NLANR as input traffic sources. The simulation results and analysis will be helpful in utilizing the functions of ATM switching and IP routing.

  • This study conducted an analysis of the current use of and satisfaction with 40 village-unit core facilities that were created through a village-building project in Busan targeting users and non-users of the facilities. The study then examined ideas to promote the availability of the facilities. The results showed that for the users, they had been using the facilities for gathering and information-sharing, and the facilities were improving the interactions among the locals. In terms of non-users, the study confirmed that any relevant fields should develop diverse programs, start promotions in various ways and establish networks among neighbors to increase the non-users' use of the facilities In addition, the study found that the village-unit core facilities are working to encourage interactions among residents and that the locals' voluntary participation in operation of the facilities are needed. The study also suggested that networks across the local communities and diverse programs should be formed and developed.

  • Mobile Ad-hoc networks have recently attracted a lot of attention in the research community as well as in industry. Although the previous research mainly focused on various of Ad-hoc in routing we consider, in this paper, how to efficiently support applications such as variable Geocasting basd on Ad-hoc networks. The goal of a geocasting protocol is deliver data packets to a group of nodes that are located within a specified geocasting region. Previous research that support geocast service in mobilie computing based on Ad-hoc have the non-optimization problem of data delivery path, overhead by frequent reconstruction of the geocast tree, and service disruption problem. In this paper, we propose the mobility pattern based geocast technique using variable service range according to the mobility of destination node and resource reservation to solve this problem. The experimental results show that our proposed mechanism has improved performance than previous research.

  • One of the major challenges of designing a dissemination protocol for Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs) is energy efficiency. Recently, this issue has received much attention from the research community, and SPMS, which outperforms the well-known protocol SPIN, specially is a representative protocol. In addition, one of many characters of SPMS is the use of the shortest path to minimize the energy consumption. However, since it repeatedly uses the same path as the shortest path, the maximizing of the network lifetime is impossible, though it reduces the energy consumption. In this paper, we propose a dissemination protocol using probability-based clustering which guarantees energy-efficient data transmission and maximizes network lifetime. The proposed protocol solves the network lifetime problem by a novel probability function, which is related to the residual energy and the transmission radius between nodes. The simulation results show that it guarantees energy-efficient transmission and moreover increases the network lifetime by approximately 78% than that of SPMS.

  • The ratio of suicide among the elderly in Korea has nearly tripled within the last 20 years. With this in mind, this study examined the effects of social exclusion on depression and suicidal ideation among the elderly living in elderly-only households with a focus on gender differences. Social exclusion is composed of economic, health, housing, education, social participation, and relational aspects. For this study, data were gathered from 527 participants aged 65 years and over. The statistical methods used for data analysis were descriptive statistics, chi-square test, t-test, and hierarchical regression analysis with the SPSS Win 20.0 program. The results of this study are summarized as follows: First, more than 80% of the elderly experienced social exclusion. Women were shown to be more vulnerable than men in terms of housing exclusion, educational exclusion, health exclusion, and multiple exclusion, whereas men were more vulnerable than women in terms of social participation exclusion. Second, social exclusion had significant effects on suicidal ideation among the Korean elderly. We also observed gender differences in the results. Regression analysis of suicidal ideation showed that relational exclusion had a significant effect on suicidal ideation in men, whereas health exclusion had a significant effect on suicidal ideation in women. Results of the study show that stronger social support networks and policies focusing on the elderly are needed in order to reduce elderly suicide in Korea.

  • Social media refers to the content, which are created by users, such as blogs, social networks, and wikis. Recently, question-answering (QA) communities, in which users share information by questions and answers, are regarded as a kind of social media. Thus, QA communities have become a huge source of information for the past decade. However, it is hard for users to search the exact question-answer that is exactly matched with their needs as the number of question-answers increases in QA communities. This paper proposes an approach for classifying a question into three categories (information, opinion, and suggestion) according to the purpose of the question for more accurate information retrieval. Specifically, our approach is based on modified Na$\ddot{i}$ve Bayes classifier which uses structural characteristics of QA documents to improve the classification accuracy. Through our experiments, we achieved about 71.2% in classification accuracy.

  • This paper argues that globalization of science can be put forward only through successful institutionalization of science at the national level and that the strengthened local research activities will contribute to a better integration into the global research community. In order to examine hypotheses derived from the theoretical arguments, this paper analyzes the development of physical science in Korea using mainly bibliometric method. The results show that the physical science in Korea has developed local characteristics represented by different research activities across sub-fields of physics. International research collaboration of the Korean physicists has not increased substantially during the time period studied, but an additional analysis indicates that the mode of international research collaboration may have been changed towards rather 'symmetric' way, resulting in the strengthened networks of the Korean physicists with international research community.
