  • The purpose of this study was made for the pre-teacher of university to enhance understanding for the concept of engine performance and to provide information regarding engine performance in the institute of teacher educator. This study was carried out through engine performance experiment with The Cussons Engine Test Bed P8250, internal combustion engine, in order to analyze data quantitatively, and apply and verify factors of controlling engine performance. The main results of this study are as follows: First, power and brake horsepower increased linearly, and torque over the mid-speed as engine rps(revolution per second) decreased. Second, the change of torque and specific fuel consumption were able to be verified and the concept of engine performance was able to be understood. Third, the experimental values of brake horsepower and torque on engine performance showed the same tendency as theoretical values. Fourth, air/fuel ratio increased proportionally as engine speed increased.

  • In Korea, only butane gas could be used as fuel gas of the outdoor gas stove. However, butane is not vaporized well at low temperatures. For this reason, in the field, nozzle of the portable butane gas stove is converted illegally to use propane gas. Because vapor pressure of propane gas is higher than that of butane gas at same temperature, gas accidents such as gas leakage could be occurred. To prevent gas accidents and use portable propane gas stoves safely, international standards need to be analyzed and verification tests need to be performed with prototype stove. This study could suggest to revise standard for safety improvement with portable propane gas stoves.

  • The hot-firing tests of a subscale gas generator were successfully performed to investigate the effect of injector shape variation on its discharge coefficient. The test results showed that discharge coefficients of fuel and liquid oxygen injectors remained nearly constant irrespective of the mixture ratio or the chamber pressure. In all experimental conditions, the combustion instability was not observed.

  • The number of vehicles employing diesel engines is rapidly rising. Accompanying this trend, application of an after-treatment system is strictly required as a result of reinforced exhaust regulations. The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) system is considered as the most efficient method to reduce particulate matter (PM), but the improvement of a regeneration performance at any engine operation point presents a considerable challenge by itself. Temperature, gas compostion and flow rate of exhaust gas are important parameters in DPF evaluation, especially regeneration process. Engine dynamometer and degment tester are generally used in DPF evaluation so far. But these test method couldn't reveal the effect of various parameters on real DPF, such as O2 concentration, amount of soot and exhaust gas temperature. This research has studied the possibility using dump combustor that used to take an approach lean premixed combustion in gas turbine for a DPF power and optimized. It is possible that utilize the system as DOC (Diesel Oxidation Catalyst) and SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) assessments test as well as DPF evaluation

  • Continuous variable thrusters require precise thrust control to change the position or attitude of the aircraft and to control the pressure inside the combustion chamber. For this purpose, the thrust is adjusted by moving the pintle structure near the nozzle neck inside the combustion chamber by moving the pintle structure forward and backward, and the actuator is used to move the pintle structure. In this paper, we developed a actuator system for continuous variable thruster and load test system to simulate the load under operating conditions. Also, the performance test of the actuator was performed using the developed load test system

  • Optimizing in-cylinder flow such as tumble or swirl is one of the key factors to develop better internal combustion engines. Especially, the tumble, which is more dominant flow in current high performance gasoline engines, has significant effects on the fuel consumptions and exhaust emissions under part load conditions. The first step for the tumble optimization is to find an accurate but cost-effective way to measure the tumble ratio. From this point of view, tumble ratios from three different measuring methods were compared and correlated in this research. Steady flow rig, water rig, and PIV were utilized for that purpose. Engine dynamometer test was also performed to find out the effect of the tumble. The results show that the tumble ratios from those methods are well correlated and that the steady flow rig is the effective method to measure the tumble despite its limitations.

  • The evaluation of the noise for the an existing engine was carried out to improve the current noise level. The applied techniques were 1m air-borne noise, combustion noise analysis, torsional analysis at the front pulley and sound pressure intensity. In addition, the evaluation of the possibility to the noise reduction by means of wrapping the parts was performed to propose the detailed information in engine design. In view of the obtained results, the following countermeasures were recommended to reduce the current noise level through the above methods. Furthermore, in order to assess the influence of combustion noise on the overall engine noise, the noise test was also performed by the change of intake air temperature up to 5$0^{\circ}C$ in steps of 1$0^{\circ}C$. Finally, the fixed design specifications to reduce the engine noise will be decided in consideration of the test data for proto type engine.

  • In this study, the cooling performance of a C/C composite material structure with metallic cooling tubes fixed by elastic force without chemical bonding was evaluated experimentally using combustion gas in a rocket combustor. The C/C composite chamber was covered by a stainless steel outer shell to maintain its airtightness. Gaseous hydrogen as a fuel and gaseous oxygen as an oxidizer were used for the heating test. The surface of these C/C composites was maintained below 1500 K when the combustion gas temperature was about 2900 K and heat flux to the combustion chamber wall was about 9 $MW/m^2$. No thermal damage was observed on the stainless steel tubes which were in contact with the C/C composite materials. Results of the heating test showed that such a metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure is able to control the surface temperature as a cooling structure(also as a heat exchanger), as well as indicating the possibility of reducing the amount of the coolant even if the thermal load to the engine is high. Thus, application of the metallic-tube-cooled C/C composite structure to reusable engines such as a rocket-ramjet combined cycle engine is expected.

  • A practical, 30-tonf-class fullscale thrust chamber has been combustion tested using real propellants for the first time in the domestic technology scene. The very first combustion test was conducted at a low mass flow rate condition for the preliminary assessment of any problems associated with its function and performance while reducing risks from a high chamber pressure never achieved before. A test for the design condition achieved through a low-pressure stage shows stable characteristics of all the static pressures and thrust. Dynamic pressures measured in the manifolds and the chamber did not reveal any distinct wave coupled to a specific frequency and their intensities reside in the allowable range. Moreover, it is encouraging to find no physical failures with a thrust chamber hardware.

  • The combustion and flow-rate control characteristics of fuel-rich gas generator which could be adopted to Ducted Rocket propulsion system are investigated. The gas generator is designed considering the design requirements of propulsion system and solid fuel for fuel-rich combustion is developed then adopted to ground test. The results of combustion test show the necessity of the special analysis tool for estimating the gas generator performance where multi-phase flow of fuel-rich gas exists. During the flow-rate control test, characteristics of gas generator pressure with the angle of valve are analyzed and, method to estimate the pressure of gas generator is suggested using the relation between the valve exit area and discharge coefficient.
