  • A number of factors combine to make ultraviolet radiation a superior means of water purification for ground water, rainwater harvesting systems and so on. Ultraviolet radiation is capable of destroying all types of bacteria. Additionally, ultraviolet radiation disinfects rapidly without the use of heat or chemical additives which may undesirably alter the composition of water. In a typical operation, water enters the inlet of a UV lamp and flows through the annular space between the quartz sleeve and the outside chamber wall. The irradiated water leaves through the outlet nozzle. Several design features are combined to determine the dosage delivered. The first is Wavelength output of the lamp, the Second is Length of the lamp - when the lamp is mounted parallel to the direction of water flow, the exposure time is proportional to the length of the lamp, the third is Design water flow rate - exposure time is inversely related to the linear flow rate, the forth is Diameter of the purification chamber - since the water itself absorbs UV energy, the delivered dosage diminishes logarithmically with the distance from the lamp. In this paper, It describe the how to design optimal UV disinfection device for ground water and rainwater. To search the optimal design method, it was performed computer simulation with 3D-CFD discrete ordinates model and manufactured prototype. Using proposed design method manufactured prototype applied to disinfection test and proved satisfied performance.

  • The theory of signal detection has been applied to a wide range of practical situation for a long time, including sonar detection, air traffic control and so on. In general, in this theory, sensitivity parametric index d' and bias parametric index $\beta$ are used to evaluated the performance of vigilance. These indices use observer's response "hit" and "false alarm" to explain and evaluate vigilance, but not considering reaction time. However, the reaction time of detecting should be considered in measuring vigilance in some supervisory tasks such as unlimited monitoring tasks (e.g., supervisors in nuclear plant). There are some researchers have used the segments of reaction time to generate a pair of probabilities of hit and false alarm probabilities and plot the receiver operating characteristic curve. The purpose of this study was to develop a quantitative vigilance-measuring model by fuzzy sets, which combined the concepts of hit, false alarm and reaction time. The model extends two-values logic to multi-values logic by membership functions of fuzzy sets. A simulated experiment of monitoring task in nuclear plant was carried out. Results indicated that the new vigilance-measuring model is more efficient than traditional indices; the characteristics of vigilance would be realized more clearly in unlimited monitoring task.

  • Establishment of trust is important in wireless sensor networks for security enhancement and successful collaboration. Basically, a node establishes trust with other nodes by estimating a trust value based on monitored behavior of the other nodes. Since a malicious/misbehaving node might launch different attack strategies and might demonstrate random misbehavior, a trust estimation method should be robust against such attacks and misbehavior. Otherwise, the operation of trust establishment will be meaningless, and performance of an application that runs on top of trust establishment will degrade. In this paper, we propose a robust and novel trust estimation method. Unlike traditional trust estimation methods, we consider not only the weight of misbehavior but also the frequency of misbehavior. The frequency-of-misbehavior component explicitly demonstrates how frequently a node misbehaves during a certain observed time period, and it tracks the behavior of nodes more efficiently, which is a main factor in deriving an accurate trust value. In addition, the weight of misbehavior is comprehensively measured to mitigate the effect of an on-off attack. Frequency and weight of misbehavior are comprehensively combined to obtain the trust value. Evaluation results show that the proposed method outperforms other trust estimation methods under different attacks and types of misbehavior.

  • Wave run-up is an important issue in offshore engineering, which is tightly related to the loads on the marine structures. In this study, a series of physical experiments have been performed to investigate the wave run-up around a vertical cylinder in transitional water depth. The wave run-ups of regular waves, irregular waves and focused waves have been presented and the characteristics in frequency domain have been investigated with the FFT and wavelet transform methods. This study focuses on the nonlinear features of the wave run-up and the interaction between the wave run-up and the cylinder. The results show that the nonlinear interaction between the waves and the structures might result wave run-up components of higher frequencies. The wave run-ups of the moderate irregular waves exhibit 2nd order nonlinear characteristics. For the focused waves, the incident waves are of strong nonlinearity and the wavelet coherence analysis reveals that the wave run-up at focal moment contains combined contributions from almost all the frequency components of the focused wave sequence and the contributions of frequency components up to 4th order harmonic levels are recommended to be included.

  • In this paper, reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) of structures is addressed. For this purpose, the global search and optimization capabilities of genetic algorithm (GA) are combined with the efficiency and reasonable accuracy of an advanced moment-based finite element reliability method. For performing RBDO, three variants of GA including a real-coded, a binary-coded and an improved binary-coded GA are developed. In these methods, GA performs (finite element) reliability analyses to evaluate reliability constraints. For truss structures which include finite element modeling, reliability constraints are evaluated using finite element reliability analysis. Response sensitivity required for finite element reliability analysis is obtained by direct differentiation method (DDM) rather than finite difference method (FDM). The proposed methods are examined within four standard test examples and real-world design problems. The results illustrate the superiority and efficiency of the improved binary-coded GA. Results also illustrate that DDM significantly reduces the computational cost and improves the efficiency of the optimization procedure.

  • Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification method. Information such as identification, logistics history, and specification of products are written and stored into the memory of RFID tags (that is, transponders), and retrieved through RF communication between RFID reader device and RFID tags. RFID systems have been applied to many fields of transportation, industry, logistics, environment, etc in order to improve business efficiency and reduce maintenance cost as well. Recently, some research results are announced in which RFID devices are combined with other sensors for mobile robot localization. In this paper, design of multi-protocol baseband for RFID reader device is proposed, and the baseband modem is implemented into SoC (System On a Chip). The baseband modem SoC for multi-protocol RFID reader is composed of several IP (Intellectual Property) blocks such as multi-protocol blocks, CPU, UART(Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter), memory, etc. As a result, the SoC implemented with FPGA(Field Programmable Gate Array) is applied to real product. It is shown that the size of RFID Reader module designed with the FPGA becomes smaller, and the SoC chip price for the same function becomes cheap. In addition, operation performance could be the same or better than that of the product with no SoC applied.

  • The insufflators in endoscopic surgery supply carbon dioxide to make the air-filled cavity in the abdomen. It contains many kinds of pneumatic and electronic parts and they are connected with the air tubes and electrical wires. The printed circuit boards (PCB) perform wiring, holding and cooling tasks in electronic systems. In this study, the PCB is used as the air channel for insufflators to decrease the cost, volume, and the malfunction according to aging of the device. Three layers of PCB made of FR4 are combined with prepreg as adhesive which has the internal airway channel according to the design. By mounting the pressure sensors and valves, the PCB based fluidic system is implemented. After calibration of flow sensor, the flow rate of the gas also can be measured. The climate test, temperature test, and biocompatibility test showed this idea can be used in insufflators for laparoscopic surgery.

  • Excessive dynamic-tension variations on the top-tensioned risers (TTRs) deteriorate the structural integrity and cause potential safety hazards. This phenomenon has become more remarkable in the development of deep-water fields with harsher environmental loads. The conventional prediction method of tension variations in hydro-pneumatic tensioner (HPT) has the disadvantage to underestimate the magnitude of cyclic loads. The actual excessive dynamic tension variations are larger when considering the viscous frictional fluid effects. In this paper, a suppression method of tension variations in HPT is modeled by incorporating the magneto-rheological (MR) damper and linear-force actuator. The mathematical models of the combined HPT and MR damper are developed and a force-control scheme is introduced to compensate the excessive tension variations on the riser tensioner ring. Numerical simulations and analyses are conducted to evaluate the suppression of tension variations in HPT under both regular- and irregular-wave conditions for a drilling riser of a tensioned-leg platform (TLP). The results show that significant reduction of tension variations can be achieved by introducing the proposed system. This research has provided a theoretical foundation for the HPT tension control and related structural protection.

  • High-resolution wind measurements at 2.25 m in height were used to investigate the mean and turbulence properties of an extreme thunderstorm wind event in West Texas. These data were combined with single Doppler scans from the Texas Tech University Ka-band mobile Doppler radars systems (TTUKa) to provide meteorological context over the surface measurement stations for portions of the outflow. Several features characteristic of a severe wind event were noted in the radar data, including a bowing portion of the thunderstorm complex and a small circulation on the leading edge. These features were reflected in the surface wind time histories and provided natural separation between various regions of the outflow. These features also contributed to the peak 1-s gust at all measurement stations. The turbulence characteristics of each outflow region were also investigated and compared. Reduced values of running turbulence intensity and elevated values of longitudinal integral scales were noted during the period of peak wind speed. Larger scales of turbulence within the outflow were also suggested via spectral analysis.

  • Tuned Liquid Dampers (TLDs) have gained wide acceptance as a system for structural control and energy dissipation. However, they face limitation caused by low damping in deep water, which affects their efficiency. Another problem with deep water TLDs is that not all water depth participates in energy dissipation. This paper investigated the effect of upper mounted baffles on the effectiveness of TLDs. The Vertical Blockage Ratio (VBR) of baffles ranged from 10% - 90%. The TLD (with and without baffle), structure, and combined structure with TLD (with and without baffles) were subjected to free and harmonic forced vibrations. Results indicated that baffles could significantly enhance the energy dissipation of TLDs, thus reducing structural responses more than structures equipped with ordinary TLDs. It was found that, there was an optimum value of VBR in which the TLD's efficiency was maximized. When TLD had an appropriate VBR, the structural acceleration and displacement responses were suppressed significantly up to 51% and 56%, respectively.
