  • This paper proposes a collision prevention system for an agricultural unmanned helicopter. The collision prevention system consists of an obstacle detection system, a mapping algorithm, and a collision avoidance algorithm. The obstacle detection system based on a LiDAR sensor is implemented in the unmanned helicopter and acquires distance information of obstacles in real-time. Then, an obstacle mapping is carried out by combining the distance to the obstacles with attitude/location data of the unmanned helicopter. In order to prevent a collision, alert is activated to an operator based on the map when the vehicle approaches to the obstacles. Moreover, the developed collision prevention system is verified through flight test simulating a flight pattern aerial spraying.

  • Collision of small vessels such as fishing boats cause great personal injury. Prior to this study, the collision prevention algorithm was developed to assess the collision risk and make the collision alarm. However, a service provided for safety, such as a collision warning, not only prevents risks, but also requires a certain degree of user satisfaction to function effectively. In this study, the collision prevention algorithm for small vessels was improved to be more practical, and the effects of the improvement were confirmed by applying the algorithm. A survey conducted on the users of the collision warning service confirmed the user requirements for improving the accuracy of the collision warning system and reducing the volume and number of alarms. Accordingly, the algorithm was improved for user satisfaction, and the actual vessel experiment was performed applying the improved algorithm in an actual maritime environment. As a result, the frequency of alarm occurrence decreased compared to former algorithm, but the alarm was relatively steadily generated in dangerous situations. It was analyzed that the accuracy and practicality of the collision alarm were improved. If the practicality and reliability of the improved algorithm are verified in the further study, it will be able to effectively contribute to the prevention of collisions of small vessels.

  • Mankind has been using ships for more than 5,000 years and has developed a range of related technologies. However, despite such a long history, compared to aircraft with a history of approximately one century, the pace of progress has been markedly slow. Even though technological progress of ships or the installation of various navigation equipment have been achieved, seaborne collisions have occurred quite frequently. This study analyzed the TCAS( Traffic Collision Avoidance System) that has contributed to the prevention of collisions with other transport methods including aircraft to suggest a collision avoidance system that can be deployed for ships. To apply the technologies applied to aircraft that move in 3D to ships that move in 2D, the difference in the operational environment between the two modes was analyzed to identify elements that need to be applied to ships. The suggested display of data on the collision prevention system is one that manipulates the augmented reality display device used in automobiles that over the past few years has undergone rapid development. Based on the presentation of technological elements that need to be considered when adopting the SCAS or the Seaborne Collision Avoidance System as suggested in this study, the authors hope to contribute to the prevention of collisions.

  • According to the Ministry of Employment and Labor's statistics on occupational fatalities in South Korea, more than half of the fatalities in the past five years have occurred in the construction industry. The stuck-by and caught-in-between accidents associated with construction equipment is the major source of fatalities from construction sites. In order to prevent such accidents in construction sites, the government has spent lots of efforts including proposing the "special law on construction safety" and encouraging the implementation of new technology for accident prevention. However, numerous accidents are still occurred at construction sites and further efforts are still required. In this manner, this study developed a collision prevention technique that can prevent collision between equipment and worker by recognizing location and type of the nearby objects through ultrasound scanning. The study conducted a pilot experiment and the analysis results demonstrate the feasibility of achieving high performance in both object recognition and location estimation. The developed technique will contribute to prevent collision accidents at construction sites and provide the supplemental knowledge on developing automated collision prevention system for construction equipment.

  • Reportedly the fatality rate from secondary collision is six times higher than the average fatality rate from all traffic accidents. So prevention of the secondary collision is attracting significant attention from automotive industries. However, the secondary collision prevention systems that have been developed are not considering possibility of brake actuator failure that can occur by the impact during the initial collision. In this paper, a new system has been developed that could prevent secondary collision even in case of brake actuator failure by taking advantage of still operating actuators. In this system, a steering control is performed for maintaining a lane by using linear quadratic regulator. Additionally, the system attempts differential brake control with the remaining braking capability to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. Through simulation in various collision scenarios, the system has demonstrated significant potential of preventing secondary collision that could otherwise have resulted in severe fatality.

  • This paper proposes the Collision Prevention System based on Fuzzy which reasons a risk with the location information of vehicles and pedestrians and prevents collision between vehicles, and between a vehicle and a pedestrian with the reasoned risk. The proposed system provides three functions. First, it identifies a pedestrian's location with his smart phone and a vehicle's location with the GPS equipped in the vehicle. and transfers the identified information to their neighbors. Second, it makes a vehicle and a pedestrian reason a risk by considering a moving direction, a moving speed and road information. Third, it provides a vehicle and a pedestrian with the reasoned information such as route detour, speed reduction, etc. Therefore, the proposed collision prevention system based on Fuzzy not only prevents collision accidents beforehand by reasoning a risk, but also reduces a variety of losses by protecting traffic accident and congestion.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the causes of collisions by examining 668 cases of merchant ship collision accidents that occurred during the past 12 years (2010-2021) and analyzed them statistically. Further, the analysis results were applied to propose a human error prevention collision avoidance (HEPCA) model. The statistical annual report of the Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal (KMST) and the collision investigation report were investigated to collect data on the causes of collisions of merchant ships, and frequency analysis was performed using the statistical analysis tool, SPSS Statistics. In the first-stage analysis, the causes of collisions were analyzed targeting 668 merchant ship collision accidents, and in the second-stage analysis, the identified maximum frequency cause factors were analyzed in detail. The analysis results identified that 98 % of the cause of the collision was the human error of the navigator, and the highest frequency was in the order of neglect of look-out > violation of navigation regulations > improper maneuvering. The cause of the neglect of look-out was mainly neglecting continuous monitoring after the first recognition of the target ship. The HEPCA model for human error prevention was proposed by applying the analysis results to the collision case of the investigation report. The results of this study are expected to be used as educational materials at marine navigator educational institutions and in practice for avoiding collisions caused by human errors of navigators.

  • Self-driving vehicles are a type of smart vehicle with the help of ICT technology, which means a vehicle that operates without the intervention of a driver.Vehicles with vehicle safety communication technology (V2X) applied use information detected from various sensors or other vehicles/infrastructures to enable the smart vehicle to accurately and quickly predict the driver's potential danger situation, contributing to more stable autonomous driving. In this paper, among V2X communication technologies, a vehicle-to-vehicle communication (V2V) simulation communication technology is used to present a scenario for preventing collisions in autonomous vehicles. A vehicle collision prevention system based on V2V simulated communication was implemented and the suggested collision prevention application scenario was demonstrated. The suggested collision prevention utilization scenario can be considered as one application case of V2V communication technologies that are currently being developed/applied.
