Penicillium, the most common genus plays an important ecological role in various terrestrial and marine environments. However, only a few species have been reported from rhizosphere soil. As part of a project to excavate Korean indigenous fungi, we investigated rhizosphere soil of six plants in the forest (terrestrial habitat) and sand dunes (coastal habitat) and focused on discovering Penicillium species. A total of 64 strains were isolated and identified as 26 Penicillium species in nine sections based on morphological characteristics and the sequence analysis of β-tubulin and calmodulin. Although this is a small-scale study in a limited rhizosphere soil, eight unrecorded species and four potential new species have been identified. In addition, most Penicillium species from rhizosphere soil were unique to each plant. Penicillium halotolerans, P. scabrosum, P. samsonianum, P. jejuense, and P. janczewskii were commonly isolated from rhizosphere soil. Eight Penicillium species, P. aurantioviolaceum, P. bissettii, P. cairnsense, P. halotolerans, P. kananaskense, P. ortum, P. radiatolobatum, and P. verhagenii were recorded for the first time in Korea. Here, we provide the detailed morphological description of these unrecorded species.
Six species of the family Kelleriidae, including four new species, are recorded from tropical waters of the Asia-Pacific, two of them from Phuket Island, Thailand, one each from Bohol Island, Philippines and Phu Quoc Island, Vietnam, and two from Kosrae Island, Micronesia. A new genus Kelleriella is proposed to accomodate one of these new species (Kelleriella quadridens n. sp.). There are three diagnostic features of the new genus: the terminal segment of antenna is armed with one strong claw and six setae, the armature of the maxilliped endopod is reduced, and the third exopodal segment of leg 4 is armed with four spines and five setae. The other three new species are Kelleria latipes n. sp., Kelleria phuketensis n. sp., and Kelleria robusta n. sp. As diagnostic features of these new species, their caudal rami are about 2.5, 3.2, and 1.72 times longer than wide, respectively, the exopod of leg 5 of them is smooth, without any process, about 1.9, 3.7, and 2.9 times longer than wide, respectively, and armed with one spine plus one seta in Kelleria latipes and Kelleria phuketensis or with 2 setae in Kelleria robusta. Additionally, Kelleria javaensis Mulyadi, 2009 is synonymized with Kelleria regalis Gurney, 1927 and Kelleria grandisetiger Kim, 2006 is synonymized with Kelleria andamanensis Sewell, 1949, and both species are redescribed.
Species of the diatom genus Chaetoceros with special intercalary setae are uncommon. For this study, we collected Chaetoceros species from August 2008 to September 2009 in Korean coastal waters and examined the ultra structures of the Chaetoceros species C. coarctatus, C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, C. diversus, and C. messanensis, using light and scanning electron microscopy. C. coarctatus, in the subgenus Phaeoceros, showed longer and stronger spines than those found in other species. C. coarctatus and C. diversus had special intercalary setae with spines in straight arrangements, whereas C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, and C. messanensis had special intercalary setae with spines arranged in spirals. The setae of C. coarctatus had spines that were robust toward the tips and, overall, longer and stronger than were those of other species. C. coarctatus and C. diversus were straight, and C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, and C. messanensis spiraled. C. messanensis had two types of special intercalary setae, both forked: 1 with spines in spirals and 1 lacking spines. We did not find spines on the anterior part of divergent point of the special intercalary setae of C. messanensis. Foramina shapes of these 5 Chaetoceros species varied as follows: very small or no foramina in C. coarctatus, relatively wide and slightly centrally constricted foramina in C. compressus var. hirtisetus and C. contortus, quite narrowly slitted or no foramina in C. diversus, and lanceolate or hexagonal foramina in C. messanensis. We found rimoportula in both intercalary and terminal valves of C. coarctatus, but C. compressus var. hirtisetus, C. contortus, C. diversus, and C. messanensis only had rimoportula in terminal valves. In addition, C. compressus var. hirtisetus and C. contortus were new to Korean coastal waters.
The community composition and distribution of fish species in the middle of the Yellow Sea were investigated in summer from 2008 to 2014. A total of 72 demersal fish species from 46 families and 17 orders were collected. The most common species were Larimichthys polyactis, Engraulis japonicus, and Chaeturichthys hexane, which accounted for 72.0% of the total number of individuals while Liparis tanakai, Larimichthys polyactis, and Lophius litulon accounted for 67.8% of the total biomass. A cluster analysis based on the Bray-Curtis similarity revealed that the fish community fell into three groups, according to latitude. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and correlation analysis showed that variation in bottom water temperature could act as an indicator of variation in community structure and abundance of the dominant species. Characteristics of fish communities, such as the number of species, the total number of individuals ($/km^2$), and biomass ($/km^2$), were highly correlated with bottom water temperature and depth.
Dinoflagellates were investigated from the coastal waters of Korea. The total 100 thecate dinoflagellates taxa, comprising of 93 species five varieties and two forms were identified, which were attributed to four orders nine families, 13 genera in Korean coastal waters. 22 species, two varieties and two forms were new to Korean waters. Ceratium arcticum, C. longirostrum, C. praelongum, C. tripos var. ponticum, Gonyaulax jollifei, G. pavillardii, Protoperidinium cassum cassum, P. conicum f. asamushi, P. depressum var. parallelum, P. elegans f. granulatum, P. globifera, P. incognitum, P. majus, P. mite, P. obtusum, P. pallidum daedalum, P. parvum, P. perplexum, P. pyriforme pyriforme, P. pyrum, P. sphaeroides, P. subsphericum, P. valgus, P. venustum, Diplopsalopsis orbicularis, Gotoius abei were new record species for Korea.

Fourteen species of the family Penaeidae have been previously reported from the Korean waters (Kim, 1977: Cha et al., 2001). Recent collections from the coastal waters of Korea revealed the presence of two penaeid species, Metapenaeopsis lata Kubo, 1949 and Parapenaeopsis cultrirostris Alcock, 1906. These two species have been reported from Japan, East China Sea and Sou China Sea, and the Indo-West Pacific low South China Sea. We present brief notes of these species as two new members of the Korean fauna. (omitted)
Three new species of Myzomolgus are described as associates of sipunculans from a tidal flat in Phuket, Thailand. As diagnostic features, Myzomolgus leptocercosus n. sp. has elongate caudal rami which are 10.7 times longer than wide, 5 setae and a conical process on the first antennular segment, an armature formula 1, 0, 1+sucker, and 6 of antenna, and an inner coxal seta on all swimming legs. Myzomolgus spatulatus n. sp. lacks a rostrum, but bears 4 setae and a spatulate process on the first antennular segment, an armature formula 0, 0, 2+sucker, and 6 of the antenna, the inner coxal seta on legs 1-3, and 5 armture elements on the third endopodal segment of legs 1-3. Myzomolgus cucullatus n. sp. has short caudal rami which are 1.60 times longer than wide, a broad, hood-like tergite of fouth pedigerous somite, 4 setae only on the first antennular segment, the armature formula 0. 0. 2+sucker, and 6 of the antenna, and no iiner coxal seta on the swimming legs.

Eastern coastal lagoons are a particular type of estuarine systems where seawater mixes with fresh water from their catchments. With the development of aquatic vegetation, this area shows high level of biodiversity. The purpose of this study is to produce a strategy for the comprehensive conservation of the vegetation of coastal lagoons through studies of the floristics and plant species compositions in 17 eastern coastal lagoons in Korea. Vascular plants were collected 109 times, from June of 2010 to November of 2014. The results showed that there were 720 taxa in total, including 118 families, 378 genera, 655 species, 13 subspecies, 46 varieties, and 6 hybrids. Korean endemic species numbered 11 taxa, and vascular plants listed in the red list according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) numbered 18 taxa. Indicator species of fourth (IV) and fifth (V) degree, as specified by floristic subregions, numbered 23 taxa. Among the species investigated in this survey, there were 4 taxa of plants of southern origin and 8 taxa of plants of northern originin the Korean peninsula. Several rare plants, Thermopsis lupinoides, Ligusticum hultenii, Mitrasacme alsinoides, Utricularia australis, Juncus fauriei, Carex vesicaria, and Puccinellia kurilensis, were distributed in eastern coastal lagoons. In all, 96 alien plants were recorded in the investigated area. The coastal lagoons on the eastern coast of Korea showed high plant diversity with many rare plants and phytogeographically important plants. Conservation strategies to ensure biodiversity and effective management of coastal lagoons are discussed in detail.
The species composition of bycatch species in the coastal waters of Yeosu were determined by monthly sample collection using a gape net with wings in 2014. Of a total of 32 fishes collected, the dominant species were Ammodytes personatus, Conger myriaster leptocephali, Sebastes inermis, Trichiurus lepturus, Thryssa kammalensis, Leiognathus nuchalis, Syngnathus schlegeli, Thryssa adelae and Hexagrammos otakii. These 9species accounted for 95.2% of the total number of individuals collected. Most of the fish caught were juveniles and small fishes. Based on the results of multidemensional scaling (MDS) analysis, the bycatch fishes were divided into five group.

We examined seasonal variation in fish species composition in coastal waters near Wolseong Nuclear Power Plant in the East Sea of Korea. A total of 72 species, 39 families, 14 orders, 46,214 individuals, and 4,639,667 g were collected. Glyptocephalus stelleri was the most dominant species by number of individuals (35%), followed by Clupea pallasii (26%). Liparis tanakai and Lophius litulon were the dominant species by biomass, accounting for 46% and 28%, respectively. We showed that bottom salinity and temperature are the most important environmental factors influencing fish species composition. Although bottom salinity did not differ statistically among seasons or stations, we detected some variation among stations. Additionally, bottom temperature differed among seasons and stations (P<0.05), affecting numbers of individuals and biomass. Thus, seasonal variation in fish assemblages can be classified into two groups: spring/summer and autumn/winter.
