  • NBR-Clay hybrid membranes were prepared by melt intercalation method with internal mixer and two roll mills. MMT was intercalated or ekfoliated by the NBR and it was confirmed by X-ray diffraction method. D-spacing of the characteristic peak from MMT plate in WAXD was moved and diminished. Gas permeability, mechanical properties and thermal properties of the NBR-Clay hybrid membranes were investigated. Gas permeability through the NBR-Clay hybrid membranes decreased due to increased tortuosity made by intercalation of clay in NBR.

  • BBiodegradable polymers have attracted great attention because of the increased environmental pollution by waste plastics. In this study, PLA (polylactic acid)/Clay-20 (Cloisite 20) and PLA (polylactic acid)/PBS (poly(butylene succinate)/Clay-20 (Cloisite 20) nanocomposites were manufactured in a twin-screw extruder. Specimens for mechanical properties of PLA/Clay-20 and PLA/PBS (90/10)/Clay-20 nanocomposites were prepared by injection molding. Thermal, mechanical, morphological and raman spectral properties of two nanocomposites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile tester, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and raman-microscope spectrophotometer, respectively. In addition, hydrolytic degradation properties of two nanocomposites were investigated by hydrolytic degradation test. It was confirmed that the crystallinity of PLA/Clay-20 and PLA/PBS/Clay-20 nanocomposite was increased with increasing Clay-20 content and the Clay-20 is miscible with PLA and PLA/PBS resin from DSC and SEM results. Tensile strength of two nanocomposites was decreased, but thier elongation, impact strength, tensile modulus and flexural modulus were increased with an increase of Clay-20 content. The impact strength of PLA/Clay-20 and PLA/PBS/Clay-20 nanocomposites with 5 wt% of Clay-20 content was increased above twice than that of pure PLA and PLA/PBS (90/10). The hydrolytic degradation rate of PLA/Clay-20 nanocomposite with 3 wt% of Clay-20 content was accelerated about twice than that of pure PLA. The reason is that degradation may occur in the PLA and Clay-20 interface easily because of hydrophilic property of organic Clay-20. It was confirmed that a proper amount of Clay-20 can improve the mechanical properties of PLA and can control biodegradable property of PLA.

  • Modification of clay surface was attempted by treating the clay with bis[(3-triethoxysilylpropyl)tetra sulfide (TSS) to raise the hydrophobicity and to induce a chemical reaction between the clay and the high temperature vulcanization-type silicone rubber matrix with purpose of improving the compatibility between the components, and thereby Na-$MMTS_4$ and Fe-$MMTS_4$ were synthesized by treating Na-MMT and Fe-MMT with TSS, respectively. Silicone rubber/clay composites were prepared by compounding the clays with silicone rubber. Thermal stability and mechanical properties were evaluated as a function of the clay types and the surface modification.

  • This article investigated to polymer-clay nanocomposite, especially in interfacial respect clay structure, its dispersion into polymer matrix, and clay modification is studied. The cationic exchange of surfactants with clay gallery results in preparing organo-clay capable of compatiblizing to monomer or polymer and increasing interlayer adhesion energy due to expansion of interlayer spacing. The orientation of surfactant in clay gallery is affected by chemical structure and charge density of clay, and interlayer spacing and volume is increased with alkyl chain length of surfactant, or charge density of clay. Also, the interaction between clay and polymer in preparing polymer-clay nanocomposite is explained thermodynamically. In the future, the study and development of polymer-clay nanocomposite is paid attention to the interfacial adhesion, clay dispersion within polymer, mechanism of clay intercalation or exfoliation.

  • Various silanes, amino silane, vinyl silane, sulfur silane (TESPD), and ZS (TESPD/zinc soap complex), are added into chlorinated isobutylene-isoprene copolymer (CIIR)/soft clay/carbon black (CB) and CIIR/hard clay/CB compounds and they are investigated with respect to the vulcanization characteristics, the processability, and the mechanical properties. Comparing hard clay and soft clay filled compounds, hard clay (Suprex) filled system shows a higher die C tear than the soft clay (GK) filled one. The other properties (Mooney, extrusion torque/pressure, torque rise ($M_H-M_L$), modulus at 300%) are close to each other. Among various silanes, the ZS treated hard clay (Suprex) compound shows the highest mechanical property following hard clay(S)/vinyl silane(V) and soft clay(GK)/vinyl silane(V) compounds. The TESPD and the ZS effectively helps a formation of a strong 3-dimensional network structure between silica and CIIR via coupling reaction due to bifunctional nature of TESPD. In addition to that, the ZS added compounds show both a better processability and mechanical properties compared to the S2 ones at low concentration due to improved compatibility between zinc soap and CIIR matrix. Only the ZS added compound shows both improved processabilities (Mooney, Extrusion torque-& pressure) and improved mechanical properties (degree of crosslinking, elongation modulus, tear, and fatigue to failure counts) on both CIIR/hard clay/CB and CIIR/soft clay/CB compounds.

  • Sulfonated poly(styrene-ethylene-butadiene-styrene) (SSEBS)-clay hybrid membranes were prepared by solution method. In the preparation of hybrid membrane, the amount of clay content was fixed to 5 phr and montmorillonite (MMT) was fully exfoliated by the SEBS and it was confirmed by X-ray diffraction method. D-spacing of the characteristic peak from MMT plate in WAXD was fully diminished. Gas permeability, mechanical properties and thermal properties of the SSEBS-clay hybrid membranes were investigated. Gas permeability through the SSEBS-clay hybrid membranes decreased due to increased tortuosity made by exfoliation of clay in SEBS.

  • Studies were conducted to evaluate spent bleaching clay as a feed resource. Raw spent bleaching clay from the soybean refining process in a rotary reactor is rich in crude fat (26.0%) and crude ash (68.3%) but low in moisture (5.2%) and crude protein (0.5%). The peroxide value of spent bleaching clay was significantly higher than soybean oil (P<0.05). Also the acid value of spent bleaching clay and soybean oil were 9.72 and 0.001, respectively, it was significantly different(P<0.01). It is possible that the acidification of spent bleaching clay was prevented by artificial method. On the feeding experiment, 2.0 to 4.0% of dietary spent bleaching clay were improve body weight gain, feed intake and feed/ gain. Results indicate that spent bleaching clay may be used at 2.0 to 4.0% for broiler diets without deleterious effects on performance.

  • In this study, stress-deformation characteristics of buried pipe are studied. A numerical model, i.e., Egg-Cam Clay is introduced for the analysis of soft clay. Cam Clay model has a difficulty in analyzing soft clay that has two properties of shrinkage and swelling. Egg-Cam Clay model is modified format of Cam Clay model. In addition, Mohr-Coulomb model using finite element method is employed to verify effects of the geogrid, EPS geofoam. Stress deformation of several cases of pipe and other reinforcemnt material combinations are analyzed. Geofoam and geogrid have positive effects on the deformation characteristics.
