In this study, we propose a simple preprocessing method for classification of basal cell carcinoma (BCC), which is one of the most common skin cancer. The preprocessing step consists of data clipping with a half Hanning window and dimension reduction with principal components analysis (PCA). The application of the half Hanning window deemphasizes the peak near $1650cm^{-1}$ and improves classification performance by lowering the false negative ratio. Classification results with various classifiers are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The classifiers include maximum a posteriori probability (MAP), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), probabilistic neural network (PNN), multilayer perceptron(MLP), support vector machine (SVM) and minimum squared error (MSE) classification. Classification results with KNN involving 216 spectra preprocessed with the proposed method gave 97.3% sensitivity, which is very promising results for automatic BCC detection.
Bayesian networks, also known as directed acyclic graphs (DAG), are used in many areas of medicine, meteorology, and genetics because relationships between variables can be modeled with graphs and probabilities. In particular, Bayesian network classifiers, which are used to predict discrete data, have recently become a new method of data mining. Bayesian networks can be grouped into different models that depend on structured learning methods. In this study, Bayesian network models are learned with various properties of structure learning. The models are compared to the simplest method, the naïve Bayes model. Classification results are compared by applying learned models to various real data. This study also compares the relationships between variables in the data through graphs that appear in each model.

It is very essential to get the accurate classification of defects in primary pressure vessel and piping welds for the safety of nuclear power plant. Ultrasonic testing has been widely applied to inspect primary pressure vessel and piping welds of nuclear power plants during PSI / ISI. Classification of flaws in weldments from their ultrasonic scattering signals is very important in quantitative nondestructive evaluation. This problem is ideally suited to a modern ultrasonic Pattern recognition technique. Here, a brief discussion on systematic approach to this methodology is presented including ultrasonic feature extraction, feature selection and classification. A stronger emphasis is placed on Fuzzy-UTSCS (UT signal classification system) as efficient classifiers for many practical classification problems. As an example Fuzzy-UTSCS is applied to classify flaws in ferrite pressure vessel weldments into two types such as linear and volumetric. It is shown that Fuzzy-UTSCS is able to exhibit higher performance than other classifiers in the defect classification.

A styled document is a document that contains diverse decorating functions such as different font, colors, tables and images generally authored in a word processor (e.g., MS-WORD, Open Office). Compared to a plain-text document, a styled document enables a human to easily recognize a logical structure such as section, subsection and contents of a document. However, it is difficult for a computer to recognize the structure if a writer does not explicitly specify a type of an element by using the styling functions of a word processor. It is one of the obstacles to enhance document version management systems because they currently manage the document with a file as a unit, not the document elements as a management unit. This paper proposes a machine learning based approach to analyzing the logical structure of a styled document composing of sections, subsections and contents. We first suggest a feature vector for characterizing document elements from a styled document, composing of eight features such as font size, indentation and period, each of which is a frequently discovered item in a styled document. Then, we trained machine learning classifiers such as Random Forest and Support Vector Machine using the suggested feature vector. The trained classifiers are used to automatically identify logical structure of a styled document. Our experiment obtained 92.78% of precision and 94.02% of recall for analyzing the logical structure of 50 styled documents.
Combining multiple classifiers has been actively exploited to improve classification performance. It is required to construct a pool of accurate and diverse base classifier for obtaining a good ensemble classifier. Conventionally ensemble learning techniques such as bagging and boosting have been used and the diversify of base classifiers for the training set has been estimated, but there are some limitations in classifying gene expression profiles since only a few training samples are available. This paper proposes an ensemble technique that analyzes the diversity of classification rules obtained by genetic programming. Genetic programming generates interpretable rules, and a sample is classified by combining the most diverse set of rules. We have applied the proposed method to cancer classification with gene expression profiles. Experiments on lymphoma cancer dataset, prostate cancer dataset and ovarian cancer dataset have illustrated the usefulness of the proposed method. h higher classification accuracy has been obtained with the proposed method than without considering diversity. It has been also confirmed that the diversity increases classification performance.

We propose a FPGA based design that performs real-time power-efficient analysis of heterogeneous sensor data using adaptive ANN on edge gateway of smart military wearables. In this work, four independent ANN classifiers are developed with optimum topologies. Out of which human activity, BP and toxic gas classifier are multiclass and ECG classifier is binary. These classifiers are later integrated into a single adaptive ANN hardware with a select line(s) that switches the hardware architecture as per the sensor type. Five versions of adaptive ANN with different precisions have been synthesized into IP cores. These IP cores are implemented and tested on Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA using Microblaze test system and LabVIEW based sensor simulators. The hardware analysis shows that the adaptive ANN even with 8-bit precision is the most efficient IP core in terms of hardware resource utilization and power consumption without compromising much on classification accuracy. This IP core requires only 31 microseconds for classification by consuming only 12 milliwatts of power. The proposed adaptive ANN design saves 61% to 97% of different FPGA resources and 44% of power as compared with the independent implementations. In addition, 96.87% to 98.75% of data throughput reduction is achieved by this edge gateway.

Pattern classification extracts various types of pattern information expressing objects in the real world and decides their class. The top priority of pattern classification technologies is to improve the performance of classification and, for this, many researches have tried various approaches for the last 40 years. Classification methods used in pattern classification include base classifier based on the probabilistic inference of patterns, decision tree, method based on distance function, neural network and clustering but they are not efficient in analyzing a large amount of multi-dimensional data. Thus, there are active researches on multiple classifier systems, which improve the performance of classification by combining problems using a number of mutually compensatory classifiers. The present study identifies problems in previous researches on multiple SVM classifiers, and proposes BORSE, a model that, based on 1:M policy in order to expand SVM to a multiple class classifier, regards each SVM output as a signal with non-linear pattern, trains the neural network for the pattern and combine the final results of classification performance.

This paper is a study to improve the classification efficiency of rotating objects by using deep neural networks to which a deep learning algorithm was applied. For the classification experiment of rotating objects, COIL-20 is used as data and total 3 types of classifiers are compared and analyzed. 3 types of classifiers used in the study include PCA classifier to derive a feature value while reducing the dimension of data by using Principal Component Analysis and classify by using euclidean distance, MLP classifier of the way of reducing the error energy by using error back-propagation algorithm and finally, deep learning applied DBN classifier of the way of increasing the probability of observing learning data through pre-training and reducing the error energy through fine-tuning. In order to identify the structure-specific error rate of the deep neural networks, the experiment is carried out while changing the number of hidden layers and number of hidden neurons. The classifier using DBN showed the lowest error rate. Its structure of deep neural networks with 2 hidden layers showed a high recognition rate by moving parameters to a location helpful for recognition.

Human facial expression shows human's emotion most exactly, so it can be used as the most efficient tool for delivering human's intention to computer. For fast and exact recognition of human's facial expression on a 2D image, this paper proposes a new method which integrates an Discrete Adaboost classification algorithm and a neural network based recognition algorithm. In the first step, Adaboost algorithm finds the position and size of a face in the input image. Second, input detected face image into 5 Adaboost strong classifiers which have been trained for each facial expressions. Finally, neural network based recognition algorithm which has been trained with the outputs of Adaboost strong classifiers determines final facial expression result. The proposed algorithm guarantees the realtime and enhanced accuracy by utilizing fastness and accuracy of Adaboost classification algorithm and reliability of neural network based recognition algorithm. In this paper, the proposed algorithm recognizes five facial expressions such as neutral, happiness, sadness, anger and surprise and achieves 86~95% of accuracy depending on the expression types in real time.

Adaboost is well known for a representative learner as one of the kernel methods. Adaboost which is based on the statistical learning theory shows good generalization performance and has been applied to various pattern recognition problems. However, Adaboost is basically to deal with a two-class classification problem, so we cannot solve directly a multi-class problem with Adaboost. One-Vs-All and Pair-Wise have been applied to solve the multi-class classification problem, which is one of the multi-class problems. The two methods above are ones of the output coding methods, a general approach for solving multi-class problem with multiple binary classifiers, which decomposes a complex multi-class problem into a set of binary problems and then reconstructs the outputs of binary classifiers for each binary problem. However, two methods cannot show good performance. In this paper, we propose the method to solve a multi-target classification problem by using radial basis function of Adaboost weak classifier.
