Numerical Study on the Motion of Azimuthal Vortices in Axisymmetric Rotating Flows

  • A rich phenomenon in the dynamics of azimuthal vortices in a circular cylinder caused by the inertial oscillation is investigated numerically at high Reynolds numbers and moderate Rossby numbers. In the actual spin-up flow where both the Ekman circulation and the bottom friction effects are included, the first appearance of a seed vortex is generated by the Ekman boundary-layer on the bottom wall and the subsequent roll-up near the corner bounded by the side wall. The existence of the small vortex then rapidly propagates toward the inviscid region and induces a complicated pattern in the distribution of azimuthal vorticity, i.e. inertial oscillation. The inertial oscillation however does not deteriorate the classical Ekman-pumping model in the time scale larger than that of the oscillatory motion. Motions of single vortex and a pair of vortices are further investigated under a slip boundary-condition on the solid walls. For the case of single vortex, repeated change of the vorticity sign is observed together with typical propagation of inertial waves. For the case of a pair of vortices with a two-step profile in the initial azimuthal velocity, the vortices' movement toward the outer region is resisted by the crescent-shape vortices surrounding the pair. After touching the border between the core and outer regions, the pair vortices weaken very fast.

  • A RC column-bent pier represents one of the most popular piers used in highway bridges. Seismic performance of reinforced concrete (RC) column-bent piers under bidirectional seismic loadings was experimentally investigated. Six column bent-piers were constructed with two circular supporting columns which were made in 400mm diameter and 2,000mm height. Test parameters are different transverse reinforcement and loading pattern. These piers were tested under lateral load reversals with the axial load of $0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Three specimens were subjected to bidirectional lateral load cycles which consisted of two main longitudinal loads and two sub transverse loads in one load cycle. Other three specimens were loaded in the opposite way. Test results indicated that lateral strength and ductility of the latter three specimens were generally bigger than those of the former three specimens. Plastic hinges were formed with the spall of cover concrete and the fracture of the longitudinal reinforcing steels in the bottom plastic hinge of two supporting columns for the former three specimens. Similar behavior was observed in the top and bottom parts of two supporting columns for the latter three specimens.

ISM대역용 마이크로스트립 패치 배열 안테나 설계 (Design of Microstrip Patch Array Antenna for ISM Band)

  • 본 논문에서는 무선LAN 및 ISM용을 위한 5[GHz]대역 원편파 마이크로스트립 배열안테나를 설계 제작하였다. 원편파를 위한 기존의 십자형 슬롯 안테나 구조를 수정하여 두 개의 슬롯이 직각으로 교차하는 부분을 없애고 분리된 4개의 슬롯으로 구성된 안테나 구조를 제안하였다. 기존의 구조에서 급전선로와 슬롯간의 비대칭으로 전자기적 결합의 약화와 슬롯의 비대칭으로 발생되는 기생요소의 증가로 안테나 효율이 약화되는 문제가 있는 반면, 제안된 구조의 안테나는 대역폭 증가와 후방 방사의 감소를 확인하였다. 제안된 안테나는 공진 주파수가 5[GHz]대역의 2${\times}$2 마이크로스트립 배열안테나를 제작하여 최대 12.5[dBi]의 이득과 280[MHz]의 대역폭(VSWR < 1.5)를 얻었다.

연속섬유가 보강된 2상 복합재료의 종방향 전단계수 해석 (Effective Longitudinal Shear Modulus of Continuous Fiber-Reinforced 2-Phase Composites)

  • Longitudinal shear modulus of continuous fiber reinforced 2-phase composites is predicted by theoretical and numerical analysis methods. In this paper, circular, hexagonal and rectangular shapes of reinforced fiber are considered using unit cell concept. And fiber array is regular rectangular and hexagonal fiber arrangement. Longitudinal shear modulus is a function of fiber distribution pattern and fiber volume change. It is found that the rectangular array has a higher longitudinal shear modulus than the hexagonal one. Also, the rectangular fiber shape in lower fiber volume fraction and the circular fiber shape in higher fiber volume fraction show the higher longitudinal shear modulus. And it has been found that the theoretical and numerical predictions of the longitudinal shear modulus give a good agreement with the experimental data at lower fiber volume fraction. Both the distance and stress transfer between the fibers are discussed as the major determing factors.

  • For long slender offshore structures, such as cables and pipe lines, their interaction with surrounding fluid flow becomes an important issue for global design of ocean systems. We employ a long circular cylinder as a representative case of slender offshore structure. A flexibly mounted cylinder in cross-flow generates complex vortex shedding and results in oscillation of the structure. In this paper, flow behind a circular cylinder at Re=100 is simulated. The vortex shedding pattern and flow induced motion are examined in the cross flow configuration as well as with various yaw-angled configurations. The "Lock-in" phenomenon is also observed when reduced velocity is approximately 4.0. The MAC Grid system, which is the typical grid system for Cartesian mesh and pressure correction methods, are used for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Predictor/Corrector method is applied for obtaining a non-linear response of structure at the flexibly mounted. The existance and motion of the body is represented by the immersed boundary technique.

  • 본 논문에서는 점성유동에 미치는 자유표면의 영향을 조사하기 위하여 자유표면을 수직으로 관통하는 원통 주위의 유동을 수치 시뮬레이션 하였다. 수치해석 방법으로서 Artificial Compressibility Method를 사용하였으며, 계산은 낮은 레이놀드수의 영역에 국한하였다. 계산결과는 자유표면에 가까운 유체영역에서 유선, 점성항력 등에 적지않은 영향이 있음을 보여주고 있다. 자유표면의 존재는 물체 후류 중의 와류를 물체로 부터 분리시키는 방향으로, 점성항력을 감소시키는 방향으로 작용하는 것으로 보인다.

A review and analysis of circular UHPC filled steel tube columns under axial loading

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) has aroused interest around the world owing to superior mechanical and durability properties over conventional concrete. However, the application of UHPC in practice poses difficulties due to its inherent brittleness. UHPC filled in steel tube columns (UHPC-FSTCs) are capable of restricting the brittle failure of non-reinforced UHPC columns and forming a high performance member with enhancement of strength and ductility. Currently, research on UHPC-FSTCs remains very limited and there is relatively little information about the mechanical behavior of these columns. Therefore, this study presents a review of past experimental studies to have a deeper insight into the compressive behavior of UHPC-FSTCs under axial loading on entire section and on concrete core. Based on the test results obtained from Schneider (2006) and Xiong (2012), an analysis was conducted to investigate the influence of the confinement index (${\xi}$) and diameter to steel tube thickness ratio (D/t) on the strength and the ductility in short circular UHPC-FSTCs. Furthermore, the appropriateness of current design codes including EC4, AISC, AIJ and previous analytical models for estimating the ultimate loads of composite columns was also examined by the comparison between the predictions and the test results. Finally, simplified formulae for predicting the ultimate loads in two types of loading pattern were proposed and verified.

  • 근접하고 있는 원통형 유전체 실린더들에 의한 산란전계를 수하였다. 산란체들 사이에서의 다중산란을 도려하고 실린더 표면에 경계조건을 적용하여 반복절차에 의해 산란계수를 계산하였다. M개의 실린더 중 i번째 실린더와 나머지 실린더들 사이에서의 상호영향을 반복절차에 의해 계산하여 i번째 실린더에서의 산란전계를 구하였다. 원통형 실린더가 아닌 임의의 단면을 가지는 실린더형 산란체에 대하서는 반지름이 작은 원통형 실린더들에 의해 모델링을 하였다. 그 실린더들에 의해 만들어지는 무한차원의 식들에 대해 적당한 절단을 하고 계산하여 산란계수의 값을 구할 수 있었다. 얻어진 산란계수에 의해 산란전계를 구하고 기존의 논문결과들과 비교하였다.

  • 균일한 정상유동을 하는 유체 안에 가로놓인 원주로부터 일어나는 vortex유출을 이산 vortex 방법을 써서 vortex cloud모형으로 simulation했다. 원주표면에서 생겨나는 와도를 매 시간 간격마다 미리 정해진 많은 갯수의 이산화된 초생 vortex로 나타낸 후 기 유출된 vortex들에 합류시켜 누적된 vortex들의 운동을 탐색함으로서 vortex 분포 상태의 진화를 알아낸다. vortex들의 이동은 cloud-in-cell 기법을 써서 추적 하였고 항력 계수와 양력 계수는 Sarpkaya의 식과 Lee의 식을 써서 계산하여 실험치와 비교하였다. 계산 인수 사이의 상호 연관 관계를 논고하였으며 부분적이나마 적정값 선정 원칙을 제시하였다.

Thermo-hydraulic Effect of Tubular Heat Exchanger Fitted with Perforated Baffle Plate with Rectangular Shutter-type Deflector

  • A study was conducted on a tubular heat exchanger to improve its heat transfer rate by using a novel baffle plate design with discontinuous swirling patterns. The design consisted of perforated baffle plates with rectangular air deflectors positioned at varying angles. The tubes in the heat exchanger were arranged in a consistent alignment with the airflow direction and exposed to a uniform heat flux on their surfaces. Each baffle plate included sixteen deflectors inclined at the same angle and arranged in a clockwise pattern. This arrangement induced a swirling motion of the air inside a circular duct where the heated tubes were located, leading to increased turbulence and improved heat transfer on the tube surfaces. The spacing between the baffle plates was adjusted at different pitch ratios, and the Reynolds number was controlled within a range of 16,000 to 29,000. The effects of pitch ratios and inclination angles on the heat exchanger's performance were analyzed. The results indicated that using a baffle plate with rectangular deflectors inclined at 30° and a pitch ratio of 1.2 resulted in an average increase of 1.29 in the thermal enhancement factor.
