Experiment was conducted to find out the influence of nitrogen and potassium split application on the yield and physiology of rice plants in a sandy-gravel soil. Nitrogen and potassium mixed application, nitrogen split application, and potassium split application increased yield of rice by 22, 20, and 18%, respectively, compared to conventional fertilizer application. Nitrogen split application increased chlorophyll content and potassium split application increased root activity. Concentration of silica, magnesium, and calcium was increased by the mixed split application of nitrogen and potassium.
Soil cyanobacteria isolated from the rice paddy fields of 10 different locations across Korea were evaluated by agar plate diffusion test for antifungal activity. Aqueous, petroleum ether, and methanol extracts from one hundred and forty two cyanobacterial strains belonging to the 14 genera were examined for antifungal properties against seven phytopathogenic fungi causing diseases in hot pepper (Capsicum annuum L). Of total cyanobacteria, nine cyanobacteria (6.34%) exhibited antifungal effects. The nine cyanobacteria selected with positive antifungal activities were two species of Oscillatoria, two of Anabaena, three of Nostoc, one of Nodularia, and one of Calothrix. Alternaria alternata and Botrytis cinerea were inhibited by nine and eight species of cyanobacteria, respectively. Rhizopus stolonifer was suppressed by only methanol extract of Nostoc commune FK-103. In particular, Nostoc commune FK-103 and Oscillatoria tenuis FK-109 showed strong antifungal activities against Phytophthora capsici. Their antifungal activity at the late exponential growth phase is related to the growth temperature and not associated with the growth parameters such as cell biomass and $chlorophyll-{\alpha}$ concentration. The high inhibition levels of antibiotics were 22.5 and 31.8 mm for N. commune FK-103 and O. tenuis FK-109, respectively. The optimal temperature for antibiotic productivity was $35^{\circ}C$.
The seasonality of phytoplankton in Dongbok lake was analysed from March to November 2003. The concentrations of TN and TP showed nearly constant level except high concentrations in May at dam site of Dongbok lake. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration was highest at dam site in May with 225.3 ${\mu}g$ L$^{-1}$ and high in spring and fall and low in summer at upper and central regions of Dongbok lake. A total of 108 phytoplankton species was identified as an algal flora of Dongbok lake. They were 54 Chlorophyceae, 30 Bacillariophyceae, 12 Cyanophyceae, and 12 species of other taxa. Total cell biomass of phytoplankton showed peaks in May$\sim$June and August$\sim$September, and low biomass in July at dam site. However, upper and central regions of Dongbok lake showed no clear patterns in cell biomass. Maximum biomass was 7,158 cells mL$^{-1}$ at dam site in May with the blooms of Peridinium bipes f. occulatum. The general seasonality of phytoplankton in Dongbok lake was Bacillariophyceae-Dinophyceae/Bacillariophyceae-Cyanophyceae/Chlorophyceae/Bacillariophyceae-Bacillariophyceae in 2003.
Filtering rates of Crassostrea gigas were experimentally investigated with reference to effects of water temperature and size. Absorptiometric determinations of filtering rates with oysters being fed diatom Chaetoceros calcirtans were carried out in a closed system. Optical density of 675nm in path length 100mm cell used as the indication of food particles absorption was appeared directly In proportion with the concentration of diatom pigment $chlorophyll-\alpha$. In the closed system where $C_0$ is $OD_{675}$ at initial time 0, $C_t$, at time t, and Z is the decreasing coefficient of OD as meaning of instantaneous removal speed, then $C_t=C_0{\cdot} e^{-2t}$, $Z=In(C_t/C_0)/t$. On the assumption that the filtering rate is constant, then removal rate per unit time (d) is $d=-e^{-z}$. If t is used to time unit of hour (hr), the filtering rate (FR) in I/hr is given by $FR=V{\cdot}d=V(1-e^{-z})$, where V is the water volume (I) of the experimental vessel. Filtering rate increased as exponential function with increasing temperature while not over critical limit. The critical temperature for filtering rate was assumed to be between $28^{\circ}C$ and $29^{\circ}C$. And the weight exponent for filtering rate is 0.223. The model formula derived from the results as FR, $Ihr^{-1}$ = $Exp(0.208{\cdot}T-4.324){\cdot} (DW)^{0.223}$ (T<29 $^{\circ}C)$ where T is water temperature $(^{\circ}C
This study note wished to introduce special-purpose ship for algae removal that is developed by core technology of our country. The ship is consisted of main frame and adjuvant that can attach and detach as cross (+) shape of a character. The characteristics of ship are super light weight and low draft. That is consisted of four devices as suction, collection, filtration and recovering units. Among these, filtration used screen filter (mesh size 30 ${\mu}m$). Also, can separate and remove water and algae by compression air participle notion. Percentage of moisture content of concentrated algal particle was 85%. Water parted with algae finally is exhausted to water area. Removal efficiency that compare by chlorophyll-$\alpha$ concentration was about 57% (inflow: 83.2 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, outflow: 35.8 $[\mu}g\;L^{-1}$) without physical and chemical pretreatment. Forward, need to achieve effect test in various conditions (algal biomass, flow etc.) for efficiency and technological elevation of exclusion device. We wished to contribute in presuppression system construction of massive algal development that manage blue-green algae occurrence area effectively, and prevents spread as lower part of reservoir.
Simple material budget models were developed to predict the spring season (March ~ May) water quality for a river-type reservoir Paldang, in the Republic of Korea. These models are available at mixed water bodies whose light intensity is negligible at the bottom. The calculated data from the models fit quite well with field data collected for 30 years, from 1988 to 2017. The apparent settling velocity of total phosphorus was estimated to be $110m\;d^{-1}$. The critical hydraulic load that determines the usability of phosphorus for algal production appeared to be about $2.0m\;d^{-1}$. When a hydraulic load was larger than the critical value, the concentrations of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ ($Chl.{\alpha}$), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and 5-day biochemical oxygen demand BOD in the reservoir water became insensitive to internal algal reactions. The model analysis showed that the allochthonous COD continued to increase while the allochthonous BOD slightly decreased after 1999. The decrease of allochthonous BOD is due to the expansion of sewage and wastewater treatment plants in the watershed. The increase of allochthonous COD seems to result from the increase in anthropogenic non-point sources as well as the increase in the discharge of natural organic matters due to climate change. Organic matter of algal origin continued to increase until the mid-2000s, but recently it has decreased as the phosphorus concentration has decreased. The COD and BOD of algal origin increased from 35 % and 27 % during 1988 ~ 1994 to 43 % and 40 % during 2000 ~ 2010, respectively, and then decreased to 25 % and 28 % during 2011 ~ 2017.

In planktonic ecosystems, the microplastics are considered as a potential food source for the zooplankton. To study a relationship between the zooplankton and the neustonic microplastics, a research experiment was carried out during May in the surface layers of the Yeosu coastal areas including Yeoja Bay, Gamak Bay, Yeosuhae Bay, and Botdol Sea. A neustonic zooplankton net (mesh size $300{\mu}m$; mouth area $30cm{\times}18cm$) was towed from the side of the ship in the event that it would not be affected by waves crashing by the ship at a speed of ca. 2.5 knots. All of the microplastic particles were separated from the zooplankton. The zooplankton and microplastics were appearing in a range of 61 to $763indiv.m^{-3}$ and 0.0047 to $0.3471particle\;m^{-2}$, respectively. It was noted that the Acartia omorii, Paracalanus parvus s. l., Labidocera euchaeta, A. hongi, decapod larvae, and cirriped larvae were predominantly seen in the experiment. For verifying relationships between zooplankton and environmental factors in addition to microplastics, a model redundancy analysis (RDA) was performed. The zooplankton were divided into two groups on the basis of feeding types (i.e. particle feeders, and carnivores), and the associated zooplankton larvae were also separately considered. A review of the additional environmental factors such as water temperature, salinity, turbidity, chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration, diatom density, and dinoflagellate density were also contained in the analysis. The results showed that a noted zooplankton abundance had no close relation with the occurring number of microplastic particles, but rather was significantly related with other noted environmental factors such as temperature, salinity, turbidity, and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration. This fact implies that most zooplankton can feed themselves as a unit, by selecting the most likely available nutritious foods, rather than microplastics under the circumstance of food-richness areas, such what food resources are available as in the location of coastal waters.
This study is measured the change of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration and phytoplankton density, the grazing rates (GR) and pseudofaeces production (PFP), by grazing of freshwater apple snail, Pomacea canaliculata, to investigated that the snails are able to control of phytoplankton bloom. The experiments are performed to evaluate the GR and PFP at different conditions such as incubation time (0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 hr), shell height (1.0 to 4.0 cm, n=108), snail density (1, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 and 5 indiv. $L^{-1}$) and food concentration (200, 400, 600, 800 and $1000{\mu}g$$L^{-1}$). Regarding feeding time, the highest GR (2.5 L. $gAFDW^{-1}h^{-1}$) and PFP (15.3 mg $AFDW^{-1}$) showed at 4 hr after snail stocking, respectively. The snail, smaller than 1.5 cm in body size, showed the highest of GRs (2.54 L. $gAFDW^{-1}h^{-1}$) for the initial period (2 hr of stocking), compared to those greater than 1.5 cm, which showed a stable FR, higher than 0.099 L. $gAFDW^{-1}h^{-1}$. Upon snail density effect, the density of 5 indiv. $L^{-1}$ induced the most effective inhibition on phytoplankton biomass with the highest PFP. On the food concentration, the highest GR (0.54 L. $gAFDW^{-1}h^{-1}$) and PFP (8.5 mg $gAFDW^{-1}$) were induced at the level of $600{\mu}g$$L^{-1}$, respectively. We checked that it is possible to control of phytoplankton bloom by the grazing of apple snail as well as Reeve. However, it required a through research for the remove of pseudofaeces and 2nd problem by the decomposition of the organic materals.

Tocopherol, carotenoids, and chlorophyll are the primary components of the antioxidative response in microalgae. Conditions of stress, such salt stress, can trigger the processes responsible for the accumulation of tocopherol and carotene. It has been found that the most difficult part of culturing microalgae is keeping it affordable. This study investigated the effects of different salt types and concentrations on the amount of α-tocopherol, carotenoid derivatives, and flocculation efficiency of Euglena sp. Cultures of Euglena sp. was developed under salt stress conditions of NaCl 200 mM and KCl 200 mM. UV-VIS spectrophotometry was used to confirm the presence of α-tocopherol and carotenoid derivatives under thirteen days of salt stress testing. Increasing salinity has a significant effect on Euglena sp., causing spherical cell morphologies with aspect ratio 1.385 ± 0.031 for NaCl 200 mM and 1.414 ± 0.040 for KCl 200 mM. Increasing salinity also slowing down development with specific growth rate value of 0.171 ± 0.006 per day and 0.122 ± 0.029 per day for NaCl and KCl 200 mM, respectively. Nevertheless, the amount of α-tocopherol in Euglena sp. increases with a high salt concentration; algal cells flocculated more successfully when increasing the salt concentrations (NaCl 200 mM and KCl 200 mM) was added. Due to the inhibition of photosynthetic activity in salt-stressed cells, the control group exhibited higher levels of carotenoid derivatives (ranging from 0.5-1 ㎍/mL) and pheophytin a and b (0.0062 ± 0.001 ㎍/mL and 0.0064 ± 0.001 ㎍/mL) than the group treated with salt stress. In conclusion, salt stress was an effective way to raises the concentration of α-tocopherol and significantly reduce the expense of harvesting Euglena sp.

A 3D hydrodynamic-ecological coupled model was applied to estimate carrying capacity in Geoje-Hansan Bay where is one of the most important oyster culturing grounds in Korea. We considered the carrying capacity as the difference between food supply to the oysters and food demand, considering monthly difference of the actual growth. The food supply to the system was determined from the results of the model simulation (tidal exchange and chlorophyll $\alpha$) over the culturing period from September to May of the following year. The food demand was estimated from the food concentration (chlorophyll $\alpha$) multiple the filtration rate of oysters that is considered monthly different growth rate of oysters and food concentration. The values of carrying capacity for the system varied from 6.1 ton/ha (minimum carrying capacity) in february to 14.91 ton/ha (maximum carrying capacity) in April of marketable size oysters (>4 g wet-tissue weight) depending on temporal variations in the food supply. The oyster production calculated from present facilities was 9 ton/ha in wet-tissue weight in Geoje-Hansan Bay. This value corresponded to $60\%$ of maximum carrying capacity of the system. The optimal carrying capacity without negatively affecting on oyster production was 5.5 ton/ha when calculated from annual statistic data and 6.1 ton/ha when determined by this study. These results suggest that it must be reduced $32\%$~$39\%$ of oyster facilities in the system.
