In this research, volume reduction of activated sludge using electrolysis was studied to find an optimum condition using lab scale experiments. Wasted sludge was treated by electrolysis with controlling current density, chloride concentration, electrode distance, and reaction time. Volume of return sludge was reduced by 9.79% in average while maximum was 16.7%. Sludge volume reduction efficiency was affected by current density and reaction time. It was reversely proportional to the electrode distance. Especially current density was effective on the system performance significantly. Electric conductivity, salinity and COD were increased by electrolysis implying sludge disintegrated and converted to COD in part. An empirical equation for total solid removal efficiency by electrolysis was proposed by multiple linear regression analysis as: $TS_{rem}$(%) = 5.534 ${\times}$ current density (A/l) + 0.178 ${\times}$ reaction time (m) + 2.758.
An attempt to improve the method of volumetric determination of tungsten developed by Luke has been made successfully. Using amalgam coated lead instead of pure metallic lead in the reduction procedure. W(VI)-W(III) reduction has been found to be quantitative in rather concentrated hydrochloric acid. Since there was no excessive dissolution of lead via reduction of hydrogen ion, lead surface was totally accessible for the reduction of tungsten and no trouble was caused by dereposition of $PbCl_2$ crystals at the nozzle of Jones reductor. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that almost 100 mg. of $WO_3$ can be handled easily if the chloride concentration of the HCl is increased by adding solid $NH_4Cl$.
In this paper, reduction characteristics of NOx gas produced from diesel engine combustion is studied by using pulse corona discharge. Nox concentration of 1900ppm (NO 1870, NO$\sub$2/ 30 ppm, N$\sub$2/ balance gas) was controlled in a fixed quantity of 280ppm, using a flow meter. Reactors are composed of cylinder type. NOx reduction rate is investigated with discharge electrode diameter[0.5,1,3,4.phi.], reactor length [130,300mm], reactor materials[Copper, Poly Vinyl Chloride] and Input voltage[DC, AC, DC Pulse square voltage]. In the result, NOx reduction rate is the best of all in copper reactor, small electrode diameter[0.5.phi.], DC pulse voltage and long reactor[300mm]. Then Teduction rate of NOx is about 93%.

Eight-week old perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L. cv. Reveille) plants were exposed to different NO3-concentrations or osmotic stress with NaCI. Previously labeled "N was chased during 14 days of non-labeled'NO3 feeding in order to investigate NO3 metabolism in relation to osmoregulation. The short termmeasurement of osmotic potential showed that the extemal concentration of Nos- had not great effect on theosmotic potential, but that osmotic adjustment was observed in NaCl-treated plants. Total uptake of NO 3 - waslargely increased by increasing supply level of NO3 while it was depressed by exposing to osmotic stress.Nitrate reduction increased to more than 29% by increasing extemal NO,- concentration from 1 mM to 10mM. When osmotically stressed with NaCI, nitrate reduction was depressed to about 37% as compared to thecontrol. The decrease in translocation of reduced N into leaves was also observed in NaCl exposed plants. Inthe medium exposed to 10 mM NO,., osmotic contribution of nitrate to cumulative osmotic potential wasdecreased, and it was osmotically compensated with soluble carbohydrate. When osmotically stressed withNaC1, the contribution of chloride was much higher than that of nitrate. The present data indicate that N03-in plant tissues, factually affected by the assimilation of this ion, plays an active role in osmotic regulation incorrelation with other osmotica such carbohydrate and chloride.(Key words : Nitrate metabolism, Osmotic stress, Nitrate supply level, Osmoregulation)ate supply level, Osmoregulation)
A method to improve water treatment efficiency by coagulant overdosing for high pH raw water at a drinking water treatment plant (WTP) which had no pH adjusting facilities was investigated. Poly aluminum chloride (PACl) was used for coagulant, and turbidity removal efficiency was evaluated as a function of PACl dosage increases. pH and turbidity of supernatant of jar-tester were 7.10 and 0.50 NTU respectively, when the turbidity, pH, alkalinity, water temperature, conductivity of raw water were 1.75 NTU, 9.38, 46.5 mg/L, $6.4^{\circ}C$, $400{\mu}s/cm$, respectively. Turbidity of settled water was reduced from 2.18 NTU to 0.28 NTU (87% reduction) when PACl dosage was increased from 16 mg/L to 45 mg/L at a full scale WTP. This can be attributed to the recovery of coagulant efficiency by pH reduction with the increase of coagulant dose, however coagulation efficiency was reduced with the formation of Al(OH)4- by PACl addition at higher pH. Coagulant overdosing was proven to be a rapid and effective method for high pH raw water, which can be applied at drinking WTP.
The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts were prepared from conventional chloride precursors by adsorption or precipitation-deposition methods. Their activities for hydrogenation reactions of cyclohexene and acetophenone were compared with those of commercial catalysts. The Pt/C and Pd/C catalysts obtained from the adsorption procedure reveal higher hydrogenation activity than commercial catalysts and the catalysts prepared by the precipitation-deposition method. Their improved performances are attributed to the decreased metal crystallite sizes of Pt or Pd formed on the active carbon support upon the adsorption of the precursors probably due to the same negative charges of the chloride precursor and the carbon support. Under the preparation conditions studied, the reduction of the supported catalysts using borohydrides in liquid phase is superior to a gas phase reduction by using hydrogen in the viewpoint of particle size, hydrogenation activity and convenience.
Hydrogen evolution on a steel surface and subsequent hydrogen diffusion into the steel matrix are evaluated using an electrochemical permeation test with no applied cathodic current on the hydrogen charging side. In particular, cyclic operation in the permeation test is also conducted to clarify the corrosion-induced hydrogen evolution behavior. In contrast to the conventional perception that the cathodic reduction reaction on the steel in neutral aqueous environments is an oxygen reduction reaction, this study demonstrates that atomic hydrogen may be generated on the steel surface by the corrosion reaction, even in a neutral environment. Although a much lower permeation current density and significant slower diffusion kinetics of hydrogen are observed compared to the results measured in acidic environments, they contribute to the increase in the embrittlement index. This study suggests that the research on hydrogen embrittlement in ultra-strong steels should be approached from the viewpoint of corrosion reactions on the steel surface and subsequent hydrogen evolution/diffusion behavior.
In this experiment we investigated the influence of various anions including oxalic acid encountered as solution phase in soil on the adsorption and desorption of sulfate in Chungwon Bt soil. The effect of chloride and nitrate on the adsorption of sulfate was not significant, suggesting that sulfate was better able to compete for adsorption sites at concentrations studied, in contrast to the large reduction in the amount of chloride adsorbed in the presence of sulfate. The results of competition for sorption sites between sulfate and anion showed that the simultaneous presence of two anions in solution was effective in reduction of competing anion at a maximum value of adsorption, due to the similar adsorption mechanism for anion competition. Therefore, the variation in the buffer power of the acids will produce a change in the strength and amount of adsorption and the competitive ability.
In the present study, the focus is on the synthesis of titanium carbide/cobalt composite powder by the spray thermal conversion process using metallic salt solution as the raw materials. Two types of oxide powders of Ti-Co-O system were prepared by the spray drying of two types of metallic salt solutions : titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate and $TiO_2$ powder-cobalt nitrate solutions. These oxide powders were mixed with carbon black, and then these mixtures were carbothermal reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixtures during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TG-DTA. In the case of using the titanium chloride-cobalt nitrate solution, it could not be obtained TiC/Co composite powder due to contamination of the impurities during the spray drying of the solution. However, in tile case of using the $TiO_2$ powder-cobalt nitrate scullion, TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder could be synthesized by the spray thermal conversion process. The synthesized TiC-15 wt. %Co composite powder at 120$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours has average particle size of 150 nm.
This study focused on high school laboratory research and the main purpose was to develop alternative additives for livestock waste and ammonia volatilization methods with high school students as participants and to provide information to business owners based on the results. Compared to the control groups, The bentonite and illite treatment groups had similar ammonia volatilization, pH, EC, and total nitrogen content. In particular, the alum and aluminum chloride mixed treatment group showed low pH and ammonia volatilization, and high EC and total nitrogen content for poultry litter. As a result, when focusing on high school laboratory research, the alum and aluminum chloride mixed agent treatment fulfilled its role as an alternative additive for ammonia reduction. In addition, this approach can be suggested as a method to solve difficulties in adapting to the field through a practical cooperative relationship with livestock farms.
