Bioactive components of ultra-fine ground Saururus, the extraction yield increases when the leaves are ultra-fine ground. Comparison of normal-ground and ultra-fine ground Saururus chinensis leaves showed that the solid content and antiinflammatory activity of ultra-fine ground extracts was higher than that of normal-ground extracts. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated Raw 264.7 cells were treated with different concentrations of Saururus chinensis extract and the amount of nitric oxide (NO) was determined; LPS-treated cells produced 2 times more NO than cells that were not treated with LPS. Moreover, the NO production in cells treated with Saururus chinensis extract was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner. Because the stimulant-induced NO production is regulated by the inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), we measured the iNOS protein level to elucidate the mechanism by which the NO production was inhibited. We found that the amount of iNOS decreased dose-dependently. It was reduced by 53% at a Saururus chinensis extract concentration of $100{\mu}g/mL$. The protein expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) in LPS-treated Raw 264.7 cells was inhibited by 31% at $100{\mu}g/mL$ of Saururus chinensis extract. Gel shift of the nuclear factor kappa B-DNA complex occurred in LPS-treated cells and the intensity of the band decreased gradually in a concentration-dependent manner. Ultra-fine ground Saururus chinensis extract had a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on the production of prostaglandin $E_2$, tumor necrosis factor ${\alpha}$, interleukin $1{\beta}$ (IL-$1{\beta}$), IL-6, and IL-8 in LPS-treated Raw 264.7 cells, i.e., at $50{\mu}g/mL$ of Saururus chinensis extract, their levels were decreased by 53, 67, 52, 37, and 21% respectively.

One of oriental medicinal plants, Potentilla chinensis, has been used for anti-inflammation, hemostatic, decryption, and antipyretic. Especially, a root of Potentilla chinensis was used as important material for oriental medication. Although several kinds of bioactive component of Potentilla chinensis extract from stems and leaves were identified, the major component of Potentilla chinensis from roots is not well established. In this study, the root of Potentilla chinensis was extracted in different solvent system and analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). According to HPLC analysis, a major component was isolated and its physicochemical properties were evaluated by mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance. Based on these results, isolated compound was identified as 2,3,8-Tri-O-methylellagic acid. And quantification of 2,3,8-Tri-O-methylellagic acid with different extraction solvent system was performed for industrial application.
This study aims to define the phylogenetic relationship within Korean section sabina and find molecular markers which resolve the phylogenetic relationship in genus Juniperus and section sabina. cpDNA matK and psbA-trnH were used as molecular markers. The combined analyses of two genes suggested that section sabina was a clade supported by 100% BP. The relationships of [J. chinensis var. sargentii+J. davurica] clade and [J. chinensis var. chinensis+J. chinensis var. procumbens+J. chinensis var. horizontalis] clade were supported by 91% BP and 100% BP, respectively. Thus, the classification of Korean section sabina would be appropriate at follows, (1) J. chinensis var. sargentii+J. davurica, and (2) J. chinensis var. chinensis+J. chinensis var. procumbens According to the results of separate analyses, matK seems to work better resolving power to clarify the phylogenetic ambiguity in Juniperus and section sabina than psbA-trnH.
Clematis chinensis is the root of Clematis chinensis OSBECK and is classified in Ranunculaceae. Clematis chinensis is a traditional medicinal herb possesses analgesic, diuretic, anti-tumorigenic, and anti-inflammatory effects. In this study, the effect of aqueous extract of Clematis chinensis against lipopolysaccharide-induced inflammation was investigated in mouse BV2 microglial cells. The aqueous extract of Clematis chinensis at the respective concentration was treated one hour before the lipopolysaccharide treatment in mouse BV2 microglial cells. From the present results, pre-treatment with the aqueous extract of Clematis chinensis suppressed prostaglandin E2 synthesis and nitric oxide production by inhibiting on the lipopolysaccharide-stimulated cyclooxygenase-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase expressions in mouse BV2 microglial cells. The present study suggests that Clematis chinensis may offer a valuable mean of therapy for brain inflammatory diseases.
Juniperus chinensis (Cupressaceae) is a valuable woody plant resource, but this rare plant is only distributed in restricted regions in Korea. In this study, we surveyed the geographic distribution regions, variation of sex ratio and the dynamics of natural populations of J. chinensis. in order to establish conservation strategies for the sustainable conservation of this important resource tree. The 17 natural populations of J. chinensis are restrictively distributed in the shore cliffs of (1) Ulleungdo island, (2) Gyeongju-si to Gangneung-si of the eastern coast, the riverside cliff along (3) Donggang-river of Jungsun-gun and Pyeongchang-gun and (4) branch of Nakdonggang-river in Uiseong-gun. The populations in Ulleungdo island showed continuous population distribution of over 200 individuals, but populations in other regions had discontinuous population distribution of under 200. The population of J. chinensis surveyed in Korea was estimated in ca. 3,200 individuals. The sex ratio (male/female) among populations of J. chinensis was diverse with variation from 0.46~1.67 range, but showed no significance. The sex ratio of the total individuals by species level was 0.74, and the percentage of female tree was significantly higher than the male. The results of dynamics analysis within population among regions showed that seedlings and saplings of J. chinensis in three regions surveyed were continuously regenerating. The distribution of DBH class showed a stable population structure of inverse J shape graph, but fragmentation and decrease in populations because of invading broad-leaved shrubs and trees from the surroundings were concerned. Further studies, and in situ and ex situ conservation strategies for the sustainable conservation on natural populations of this rare resources woody plant, J. chinensis in Korea are recommended.

Nardostachys chinensis (N. Chinensis) belonging to the family Valerianaceae have been used in traditional medicine to elicit stomachic and sedative effects. The present study investigated the effects of water extract of N. Chinensis in human lymphoma U937 cells. The proliferation of U937 cells was decreased by N. Chinensis. Anti-proliferative effect of N. Chinensis on U937 cells was associated with G0/G1 phase arrest, which was mediated by regulating the expression of p21 and p27 protein. In addition, the levels of CDK2, CDK4, CDK6, Cyclin D3, and Cyclin A were decreased, but Cyclin D1, Cyclin D2 and Cyclin E were essentially undetectable. N. Chinensis induced the differentiation of U937 as shown by increased expression of differentiation surface antigen CD11b, but not CD14. Taken together, these results demonstrated that N. Chinensis potently inhibits the proliferation of U937 cells via the G0/G1 phase cell cycle arrest in association with p21 and p27, and induces granulocytic differentiation.
These studies were conducted to carry out mechanism and site of gall formation by Schlectendalia chinensis in Rhus javanica. The formation period of gall hy occurrence of fundatrix was middle of June, and fundatrix was settled and parasited on back side of immature leaves and tissues of Rhus javanica was ride to fore face, then formed Schlectendalia chinensis gall. Scl~lectendalia chinensis was suddenly developed in middle of Auguest. As the density of Schlectertdalia chinensb increases, the Schlectendalia chinensir gall was more plumped. The part of phyllotaxy of Schlectendalia chinensis gall in leaf and pinnate of was increased in closer pan of terminal leaflet and leaflet was more occupied then wing.
Cuscuta chinensis Lam. and Cuscuta japonica Choisy are parasitic plants. C. chinensis seeds were traditionally used for treatment of kidney and liver deficiencies. C. japonica seeds were used as tonic medicine to improve liver function and strengthen kidneys, treatment of high blood pressure, chronic diarrhea, and sore eyes. Cuscutae Semen are seeds of only C. chinensis in Korean Herbal Pharmacopoeia (K.H.P.). The developed HPLC-PDA method easily, accurately, and sensitively quantified using eight marker compounds [hyperoside (1), astragalin, (2), quercetin (3), kaempferol (4), chlorogenic acid (5), 3,4-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (6), 1,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (7), and 4,5-di-O-caffeoylquinic acid (8)]. In addition, the method may be used to distinguish seeds between C. chinensis Lam. and C. japonica Choisy. Furthermore, the result from the current study was applied to clarify samples between steam processed and unprocessed samples of C. chinensis by pattern analysis.
The results from the determination of contents of chemical components in Schizandra chinensis are as follows. The contents of malic acid and citric acid in Schizandra chinensis was 38,691 and 3,330 ppm/100g dry weight. The contents of total phenolic compounds in Schizandra chinensis was 1.560%. The predominat phenolic acids were cinnamic acid, gentisic acid, coumalic acid, chlorogenic acid and ferulic acid. Contents of crude lipids in Schizandra chinensis. was 160.5mg/g. Most of fatty acids in lipids were oleic acid, linoleic acid and linolenic acid which are unsaturated fatty acids, and palmitic acid which is saturated fatty acid. In case of essential oils, the predominat components in Schizandra chinensis were caryophyllene, calarene, cubebene, acoradiene and ${\beta}$-himachalene
The objectives of this study were to investigate the antioxidant activity of Schizandra chinensis seed oil and its active ingredients. Schizandra chinensis seed oil content extracted with hexane was 36.06%. Schizandra chinensis seed oil extracted with hexane was purified during 20 min at $85^{\circ}C$ with phosphoric acid 0.15% for degumming and 20 min at $80^{\circ}C$ with 3 M NaOH 1% for deaciding. The purified oil consisted of unsaturated fatty acid (88.7%), fatty acid (9.97%), and so on. The major unsaturated fatty acids of purified oil were linoleic acid (71.1%) followed by oleic acid (15.7%), while the main saturated fatty acid was palmitic acid (6.56%). The purified oil was found that contents of phenolic compounds, vitamin A, and E were 1.45 g/100 g, 1494.86 RE/100 g, and 0.58 mg ${\alpha}$-TE/100 g, respectively. Schizandra chinensis seed oil exhibited strong antioxidant activity (91.7%) as compared to grape seed oil and canola seed oil with 87.4% and 85.1% in the DPPH assays. Present results suggest that Schizandra chinensis seed oil could be potentially used as bioactive source for health and preventing numerous diseases.
