Most deciduous trees in temperate zone are dormant during the winter to overcome cold and dry environment. Dormancy of deciduous fruit trees is usually separated into a period of rest by physiological conditions and a period of quiescence by unfavorable environmental conditions. Inconsistent and fewer budburst in pear orchards has been reported recently in South Korea and Japan and the insufficient chilling due to warmer winters is suspected to play a role. An accurate prediction of the flowering time under the climate change scenarios may be critical to the planning of adaptation strategy for the pear industry in the future. However, existing methods for the prediction of budburst depend on the spring temperature, neglecting potential effects of warmer winters on the rest release and subsequent budburst. We adapted a dormancy clock model which uses daily temperature data to calculate the thermal time for simulating winter phenology of deciduous trees and tested the feasibility of this model in predicting budburst and flowering of Niitaka pear, one of the favorite cultivars in Korea. In order to derive the model parameter values suitable for Niitaka, the mean time for the rest release was estimated by observing budburst of field collected twigs in a controlled environment. The thermal time (in chill-days) was calculated and accumulated by a predefined temperature range from fall harvest until the chilling requirement (maximum accumulated chill-days in a negative number) is met. The chilling requirement is then offset by anti-chill days (in positive numbers) until the accumulated chill-days become null, which is assumed to be the budburst date. Calculations were repeated with arbitrary threshold temperatures from $4^{\circ}C$ to $10^{\circ}C$ (at an interval of 0.1), and a set of threshold temperature and chilling requirement was selected when the estimated budburst date coincides with the field observation. A heating requirement (in accumulation of anti-chill days since budburst) for flowering was also determined from an experiment based on historical observations. The dormancy clock model optimized with the selected parameter values was used to predict flowering of Niitaka pear grown in Suwon for the recent 9 years. The predicted dates for full bloom were within the range of the observed dates with 1.9 days of root mean square error.
Temperature effects on diapause termination of Paratlanticus ussuriensis eggs were studied by measuring embryonic development and hatching rates at various conditions of indoor chilling and overwintering temperatures. Diapausing eggs of P. ussuriensis did not hatch at continued incubation at $25^{\circ}C$ and even after chilling for once at either $5^{\circ}C$ or $10^{\circ}C$ for 30, 45 and 60 days. In addition, double chillings at $5^{\circ}C$ with a 90 days interval at $25^{\circ}C$ did not induce hatching of diapausing eggs. However, double chillings at $10^{\circ}C$ induced hatching at 3.6${\sim}$26.7%. When eggs were incubated at $25^{\circ}C$ after chilling for once at $5^{\circ}C$ for various periods, those weights were not changed but those chilled at $10^{\circ}C$ gradually increased to approximately 1.5 times. When 60-days-old eggs were artificially deposited under the soil at three different mountain sites in September 2007, the hatching rates of the first-overwintered eggs were 11.3, 3.5 and 4.1% and those of the second-overwintered eggs were 25.1, 21.6 and 0.4% at Hoepori, Bitanri and Hwasanri, respectively. Most eggs were hatched from mid-March to mid-April but little bit earlier in southern regions. During the hatching period soil temperatures in three tested locations were around 8 to $12^{\circ}C$. In overall, diapausing eggs of P. ussuriensis were greatly influenced by chilling temperature conditions and those repeated cycles, and may required overwintering for one or two times to hatch for the post-embryonic development.

The study focuses on the quality assessment of Black Bengal buck semen preserved at chilled condition. In this in vitro trial, collected semen from Black Bengal bucks was preserved at chilling temperature ($4{\sim}5^{\circ}C$) in tris-glucosecitrate yolk medium of 1:5 ratios for four days. Artificial Vagina (AV) method was utilized to collect semen from buck. General evaluation of semen includes the color, mass activity and density were measured by direct visual examination. However, computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) and phase contrast microscopy were used to figure out the motility (%), hyper-activated (HYP) motility (%) and number of abnormal spermatozoa (%) initially, and at every 24 h intervals. The result revealed that spermatozoa preserved at chilling temperature showed significantly (P<0.05) lower motility and HYP motility with the progression of preservation. The number of phenotypically abnormal spermatozoa significantly (P<0.05) increased following preservation. Although significant positive correlation (r=0.945; P<0.05) was existed between % motile and % HYP motile spermatozoa however, the % of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa was negatively correlated with % motile (r=-0.997; P<0.05) and % HYP motile spermatozoa (r=-0.946; P<0.01). Therefore, we concluded that the quality of chilled semen progressively losses its viability and doesn't remain useable after certain period of preservation with respect to its motility and morphology.

The effect of climate change on urban woody plants remains difficult to predict in urban areas. Depending on its tolerances, a plant species may stay and survive or stay with slowly declining remnant populations under a changing climate. To predict those vulnerabilities on urban woody plants, this study suggests a basic bioclimatic envelop model of heat requirements, cold tolerance, chilling requirements and moisture requirements that are well documented as the 'climatic niche'. Each component of the 'climatic niche' is measured by the warmth index, the absolute minimum temperature, the number of chilling weeks and the water balance. Regarding the utility of the developed model, the selected urban plant's present probabilities are suggested in the future climate of Seoul. Both Korea and Japan's thermal thresholds are considered for a plant's optimal climatic niche. By considering the thermal thresholds of these two regions for the same species, the different responses observed will reflect the plant's 'hardening' process in a rising climate. The model illustrated that the subpolar plants Taxus cuspidata and Ulmus davidiana var. japonica are predicted to have low suitability in Seoul. The temperate plants Zelkova serrata and Pinus densiflora, which have a broad climatic niche, exhibited the highest present probability in the future. The subtropical plants Camellia japonica and Castanopsis cuspidata var. sieboldii may exhibit a modest growth pattern in the late 21C's future climatic period when an appropriate frost management scheme is offered. The model can be used to hypothesize how urban ecosystems could change over time. Moreover, the developed model can be used to establish selection guidelines for urban plants with high levels of climatic adaptability.
The purpose of this study is to predict multiplication patterns of foodborne pathogens according to packaging methods and storage conditions in home-delivered meals. Pan fried oak mushroom and meat, soy sauce glazed hair tail and roasted dodok which inoculated $10^6\;CFU/g$ of foodborne pathogens were packaged by wrap packaging, top sealing, vacuum packaging and stored at 25, 4 and $-18^{\circ}C$ during 5 days. The result of study was revealed that the growth and multiplication pattern of the inoculated foodborne pathogens was inhibited in chilling and freezing storage after vacuum packaging, and was significantly influenced by storage temperature. The survival of Listeria monocytogenes was also significantly influenced by storage period. The effective method to preserve the bacteriologic safety of pan fried oak mushroom and meat and soy sauce glazed hair tail in home-delivered meals was stored for maximum three days in chilling storage after vacuum packaging.
Dormant one-year-old ginseng roots were subjected to a range of stratification temperatures and time to define effective limits to these parameters and to quantify their effect on terminating dormancy. Effective storage temperatures tested ranged from $0^{\circ}C\;to\;9^{\circ}C.$ A low percentage of roots produced tops with as few as 30 days in stratification; however, 75 to 90 days were required for 100 percent emergence. Days to emergence, after planting, decreased with increased days in storage thru the maximum storage time of 120 days. The number of days of dormancy was relatively constant, near 126.5 days, over the range of effective temperatures and acceptable storage times. The minimum period of dormancy was associated with 75 days in storage at $3^{\circ}C.$ Root growth rate, after emergence, was greatest following 105 days of stratification. The frequency distribution of emergence with days in stratification suggests the potential of selecting for strains of ginseng with low chilling needs for satisfying dormancy requirements.
This experiment was carried out to find out the effect of packing methods on physico-chemical properties of breast and thigh meats in chicken, which was dried by air spray chilling method. The chicken carcass was cut into breast and thigh muscles, which were either vacuum packed or atmosphere packed, and stored at -2O˚C for 1, 4, 8, 12 and 16 wk after quick freezing at -45˚C for 35 min. The pH values of atmosphere-packed breast meat and vacuum-packed breast meat after one wk of storage were higher than those of atmosphere-packed thigh meat and vacuum-packed thigh meat(P< .05). The pH values increased as storage period extended, but no significant difference was detected between two packing method(vacuum vs. atmosphere). Total moisture contents of breast meats after one wk of storage were higher than those of thigh meats. The total moisture contents decreased slowly as storage period extended, but no significant difference was detected between two packing method(vacuum vs. atmosphere). The shear force value of thigh meat was higher than that of breast meat. The shear force values of both meats decreased as storage period extended, regardless of packing method. The water soluble protein extractability of thigh meats was higher than that of breast meat, and the water soluble protein extractability of all treatments decreased until 8 wk after storage, but increased gradually after 8 wk of storage period. The salt soluble protein extractability of breast meat was higher than that of thigh meat, and the salt soluble protein extractability of all treatments decreased as storage period extended. With regard to the packing method, the vacuum packing showed higher value than that of atmosphere packing method until 8 wk of storage. Total lipid contents of atmosphere- and vacuum-packed thigh meats at 1 wk of storage were higher than those of breast meats, and the total lipid contents of all of treatments decreased as storage period extended. However, no significant difference was detected between two packing methods. The fatty acid contents of breast and thigh meats were in order of o1eic(33,5~42.4), palmitic(19.7~30.8) and linoleic acid(10.8~17.4).
The exposure of Clamydomonas reinhardtii to low temperatures resulted in an accumulation of cellular pyruvate that dissipated when the chilled cells returned to ambient temperature. The dissipation of pyruvate accumulation was accompanied by an increase in the production level of superoxide radicals $(O_2^-)$ in cells. The formation of $O_2^-$ at an excessive level during the post-chilling period was apparently countered by a substantial activation of superoxide dismutase (SOD). All these results are similar to those observed previously in rice seedlings subjected to the cold-treatment, implicating that a common mechanism is probably underlying for the primary processes of chilling injury both in higher plants and in algae. It was also observed that the activation of Mn-containing SOD contributes the major share in the increase of SOD activity of whole algal cells. Because Mn-SOD is present only in mitochondria, the observation corroborates the concept that the $O_2^-$ scavenging enzyme would be induced to cope with the cold treatment-caused adverse situation in mitochondria where the toxic active oxygen is produced at rates far exceeding the normal rate.
This experiment was carried out to find out the dormancy physiology, method of softening culture and evaluation of nutritional value of wild garlic, Ulrung-native Allium victorialis var. platyphyllum. In March, a new bulbs, the shoot and bulbs began to develop until the bulbs showed their complete dormant states in late August. The bulbs renewed to another one in every years. When shoots germinated about $1{\sim}2\;cm$ from mother bulbs, the soft tissues in the mother bublbs was degenerated and finally remained as only fiberous tissues unlike the other bulbaceous plants. There was a high inhibiting activities like ABA in the bulbs. This is believed that this inhibiting substance like ABA in the bulbs is related to the dormancy of wild garlic. Although the immatured bulbs, harvested at May and June, was treated with chilling for 90 days, it didn't germinate their shooting, but the matured bulbs, harvested at July and August, could germinate their shooting over 1 cm in 75 and 60 days chilling treatment, respectively. The shoot elongation was promoted by the longer chilling periods, the later harvesting day and the dark condition. The crude fiber content of leaf and stem increased at more expanded leaf and higher light intensity condition. Since the shoots, grown from germinating to leaf expanding time, had a good quality for food stuff and had less crude fibers, we supposed this period is to be most appropriate for harvesting time.
The $O_2^-$ level of the extract from young rice leaves, which was cold treated for 2 days and then placed at room temperature for a period of time significantly higher than that from tissues untreated. $O_2^-$ level in leaves was practically unchanged during cold treatment for 48 hours. But it started to increase to arrive at maximum in 8 hours, once the plants were placed under room temperature. The abnormal production of $O_2^-$ in mitochondria during postchilling process was interpreted as a biochemical consequence of accumulation of glycolysis product(s) in cytosol and/or NADH in mitochondrial matrix due to disruption of catabolic balance at low temperature. Mitochondria isolated from the chilling injured tissue was found to have lost considerably their respiratory activity. This fact may imply the involvement of intramitochondrial accumulation of $O_2^-$ in the inactivation of electron transport chain system. The observation that mitochondria in the presence of the $O_2^--producing$ enzymatic system (Xanthine/Xanthine oxidase) lost their respiratory activity supports this inference. It was also found in this work that Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a substrate inducible enzyme, and that SOD is a possible protective agent in plant cell against chilling injury.
