  • This study analyzed the contents of reading textbooks of Chinese-Korean $1^{st}$, $4^{th}$, and $7^{th}$ graders in Yanji, China with reference to ecological systems and values. Results showed that the literature genre of Korean textbooks in China was predominantly novels/stories(38.5%) rather than essays(13.7%), poems/verses/rhymes(16.2%) or others(31.6%). Characters were classified into 9 categories and analyzed by Bronfenbrenner's ecological paradigm. It was found that Chinese-Korean textbooks included more characters belonging to exo- or macro-systems including school, community, and government while Korean textbooks emphasized the self or the family, both belonging to the micro-system. Values in Chinese-Korean textbooks emphasized community and government. Korean textbooks emphasized individual life. Differences were more pronounced in textbooks of the upper grades.

  • Two hundred and sixty-six mothers with preschool and primary school children filled out TV diaries for three days around the TV turning-off campaign day initiated by YMCA. TV diaries were designed to record the TV programs watched by family members as well as the focused child's activities every 15 min. 121 families participated in the campaign voluntarily and 145 families served as the control group. The campaign group watched less than the control group even before the campaign day and differed in several family backgrounds primarily due to the difference of family members' ages in both groups. Despite participating in the campaign, 53.9% of the families among the campaign group watched TV and 35.5% of the children in these families watched TV on the campaign day. TV watching time measured by the questionnaire was significantly higher than the estimates by diary method. Participating children in the campaign increased in activities such as reading, indoor play, as well as video watching. In the campaign group, TV watching time on the next day of the campaign increased slightly than the day before it. Preschool and primary school children's activities as well as the watched TV programs were analyzed separately for two groups. In addition, total TV on-time and coviewing patterns by the focused child with the family members were analyzed in relation to the child's other TV watching patterns as well as their related variables.

  • Children are the foundation and future of this society and understanding their impressions and behaviors is very important and the child's behavioral problems are a burden on the family and society as well as have a bad impact on the development of the child, and the early diagnosis of these problems helps to solve or mitigate them, and in this research project we aim to understand and know the behaviors of children, through artificial intelligence algorithms that helped solve many complex problems in an automated system, By using this technique to read and analyze the behaviors and feelings of the child by reading the features of the child's face, the movement of the child's body, the method of the child's session and nervous emotions, and by analyzing these factors we can predict the feelings and behaviors of children from grief, tension, happiness and anger as well as determine whether this child has the autism spectrum or not. The scarcity of studies and the privacy of data and its scarcity on these behaviors and feelings limited researchers in the process of analysis and training to the model presented in a set of images, videos and audio recordings that can be connected, this model results in understanding the feelings of children and their behaviors and helps doctors and specialists to understand and know these behaviors and feelings.

Method: Data was collected from June 1th to 24th, 2003. The sample group(two elementary schools in A city)consisted of 105students mother with normal vision(naked vision 1.0 or more), 105 students mother with subnormal vision(0.7 or less). The data was analyzed using S.A.S. For the test of homogeneity and significance of variable, Fisher's Exact test and Student's t-test were used. Results: 1. There was significant difference in perception of being changed the children's eyesight between normal and myopia group(t=7.86, p=.0492). 2. High scores of cause of myopia were distance from TV or computer to viewer and time of watching TV or using computer in both groups. 3. There was significant difference in perception score of cause of myopia in the myopia group was 13.26, and 18.04 in the normal group(t=3.01, p=0.003). Especially in the unbalanced and regulated diet, regulated exercise, distance of eyes reading books and illumination, normal group had more perception score than myopia group. Conclusion: A myopia education program for children and parents should be planed and the effect be verified.

The researcher, as a first step, searched web sites of 29 data rooms of 26 libraries and summarized space plots and features of data rooms through in-person visits. Then the author made a categorization standard and did a general analysis of featured data rooms through multiple categorization steps. There are Basic Type, General Type, Book-Shelf Centered Type, Book-shelf Scattered type and Multi-Functional Type out of this categorization steps. In sum, six categorizing bases, dividing infant room from child room, space zonning, position of entrance, compactness of reading space, position of book-shelf and orientation of book-shelf will be important design standards for child data-room of future libraries and an effective guide-lines for other unit data-rooms.

  • This study was aimed to compare teacher's and mother's literacy beliefs, perception of picture books, and frequency of reading activities, and examine how these variables affect the interaction for reading picture books with preschoolers. The results of the survey from 120 teachers and 168 mothers who have 5-year-olds in Gyeonggi-do and Incheon-si are as follows. Teachers' literacy beliefs were closer to whole language beliefs than were mothers'. Teachers and mothers both fully realized the importance of reading aloud picture books to children with no difference between each other. The level of teachers was higher than mothers' in terms of pleasure of reading picture books. Mothers thought that it is important to reflect on preschoolers' development level, individual conditions, and daily lives when choosing picture books. On the other hand, teachers believed that the popularity of the book is more important. Overall, teachers perceived more benefits of reading picture books than mothers. Mothers reported more extensive interaction when reading books with preschoolers than teachers, while teachers spent more time on reading activities with preschoolers than mothers. Teachers' and mothers' frequency of reading activities and perception about the benefits of reading picture books had effects on their interaction for reading picture books with preschoolers.

  • This study investigated the effects of three factors-mothers' parenting beliefs; child care-home involvement; and the home learning environment - on the school readiness of 3- to 5-year-olds. The subjects were 366 children who were enrolled in child care centers located in Seoul and the Kyoungki area, and their mothers. The Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) technique was employed to test the pathways to children's school readiness as indicated by the child's abilities in vocabulary, math and reading. The results showed that mothers' stronger beliefs in their responsibilities in their children's academic and behavioral development predicted greater involvement in child care and better quality in the home learning environment. Likewise, the quality of the learning environment predicted the extent of the child's readiness for school. No direct relation was found between child care involvement and the child's school readiness. The results imply that multiple factors - parental, child-care-related, and home environmental- explain the extent to which the child is prepared to adjust to scholastic life.
