  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of selected internal and situational factors on children's prosocial behaviors. While child's sex and trait empathy were chosen as internal factors, state empathy and social evaluation were regarded as situational factors. The subjects were 72 bays and 72 girls chosen from 288 eleven-year-olds. This selection was based on their emplathic scores measured by the Bryant Empathy Scale (1982). Half of the 144 children belonged to the high-trait empathic group and the other half to the low-trait empathic group. Within each of the high-and the low-trait empathic groups, equal numbers of boys and girls were randomly assigned to one of the two state empathy conditions and two social evaluation conditions. The state empathy conditions were divided into the arousal condition and the disregarding condition. To control social evaluation, subjects were led to believe that the experimenter either would or would not evaluate their donation of colorful ball-point pens to handicapped children. The data was analyzed by 4-way ANOVA [sex(2)${\times}$trait empathy(2)${\times}$state empathy(2)${\times}$social evaluation(2)]. The results were that (1) children's prosocial behaviors were significantly different by sex, state empathy, and social evaluation, and (2) children's prosocial behaviors were not significantly different by their trait empathy level.

  • This study investigated the relationships between the child-rearing involvement of fathers and their children's social-emotional competence. The subjects were 257 kindergarten children and their fathers. Data on the children's social and emotional competence were provided by their mothers, kindergarten teachers and five trained observers. The observers tested the social-emotional problem solving ability of the children. The data were analyzed by frequency, percentage, mean, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe post test, and Pearson's correlations. Results showed child rearing involvement differences between fathers based on (1) age and educational level of fathers, and (2) sex of child. Father's child-rearing involvement and child's social-emotional competence were correlated, especially in children whose fathers participated positively in child-rearing and had effective cognitive strategies for solving social and emotional problems.

  • Objectives: Child mortality remains a critical problem even in developed countries due to low fertility. To plan effective interventions, investigation into the trends and causes of child mortality is necessary. Therefore, we analyzed these trends and causes of child deaths over the last 30 years in Korea. Methods: Causes of death data were obtained from a nationwide vital registration managed by the Korean Statistical Information Service. The mortality rate among all children aged between one and four years and the causes of deaths were reviewed. Data from 1983-2012 and 1993-2012 were analyzed separately because the proportion of unspecified causes of death during 1983-1992 varied substantially from that during 1993-2012. Results: The child (1-4 years) mortality rates substantially decreased during the past three decades. The trend analysis revealed that all the five major causes of death (infectious, neoplastic, neurologic, congenital, and external origins) have decreased significantly. However, the sex ratio of child mortality (boys to girls) slightly increased during the last 30 years. External causes of death remain the most frequent origin of child mortality, and the proportion of mortality due to child assault has significantly increased (from 1.02 in 1983 to 1.38 in 2012). Conclusions: In Korea, the major causes and rate of child mortality have changed and the sex ratio of child mortality has slightly increased since the early 1980s. Child mortality, especially due to preventable causes, requires public health intervention.
